“What did you want to show me?” a curious Lily asks as Strange sets the course of Mom somewhere else instead. After some catching up to fill in what had happen between the two of them within the year, Strange wanted to go to her favorite thinking spot whenever she needed to be alone. “You’ll see” she walks to the door. Lily looks to the monitors to get a sneak peak but was disappointed that she could only see a night sky. The door slides open as Strange politely leads Lily out but, the garden was no longer there. Nothing remained of it. Neither tree, bush, grass, or even so much as a projection of the sky. Instead stars brilliantly shined in every direction. The very floor they stood on was transparent and shining brilliantly. Among the stars were clouds of gases carrying different hues of colors. It was staggering beauty but Strange’s eyes were fixated on Lily’s stunned expression. She was clearly impressed. “What?” was all she could utter as she looked around in all directions. They stood on nothing, there were no walls separating them from the coldness of space, all that remained was the tower. Lily grabs Strange’s arm and looks at her with curiosity and wonder in her eyes. “You now sit on edge of the galaxy. We are the only two living people short of Gods and demons that have been out this far. How does it feel to take a sneak peak and stand at the last checkpoint this galaxy has left. It’s final challenge to mankind?” “How is this possible?” The weight of it was almost too much to handle. It wasn’t an unfair question to ask. “Mom is beyond me. Beyond any of us really. Found on a planet that has long lost it’s life, we never did find out if it’s origins were ever there on that planet.” “Who is ‘us’? Is it Dario?” Strange chuckled, “No it was before Dario. It was before my days of adventuring even. Back when I was still in the institution, when the Tuffles took me off the streets to train me for war.” “You’re not human? How are there Tuffles left? How did they find a ship like, er… your mother? How did you even figure out how to use it?” “Woah, slow down. One question at a time. Yeah there were other Tuffles but most were located on the Alpha Collective just before it vanished. How they found the ship beats me. I wasn’t high enough in the pecking order to get that sort of information. As for how I found out how to use it, Mom taught me everything I know. Slow process when your mentor doesn’t speak your language. Here, let’s just sit.” Strange lowers herself onto the floor with her legs crossed. Lily soon joins her, not really understanding why. “There’s so much about you I want to know about. You just come in and out of people’s lives like it’s nothing and you see all these amazing things and you’re not even phased by it.” “I can tell you stories about it and show you a few things here and there but you can’t keep following me anymore Lily. It’s too dangerous to dive into my world” Lily snaps her attention to Strange, staring fiercely into her eyes “You’re not ditching me that easily! You keep getting yourself into trouble over and over again. Why do you do it? Why not just be a visitor and watch things happen instead of making things happen?” “I do it because I love everything that I see. I really do. Mom showed me what the universe has to offer and I just… I don’t know I feel like I should do my part in helping it” “And you really believe that? That’s quite the God complex.” “So what if it is? I want to make a difference and jump in, stop people from killing each other, stop wars from breaking out, or even end wars personally. It’s my life on the line instead of the billions of others that could’ve died. I can take it, I can save everyone, and even if I can’t what’s wrong with going about thinking that I can?” “Where’s Dario?” The sudden topic change threw Strange off, “he’s… uh, he’s not here anymore” “Is he…” “No! God, no! At least I don’t think so… He was fine when I last saw him” “Which was when?” “About a year ago…” “After what happened with us?” Strange quickly got up, not liking having the pressure Lily put on her, “it doesn’t matter Lily. That’s not the point. The point is it’s too dangerous, I’m too dangerous to be followed around. Dario wanted a quiet and simple life from the start and I was changing him into someone different. He’s fine now, safe and alive.” Lily continued to sit, eyeing Strange as she paced around. “So you’ve been alone this whole year haven’t you?” “I told you I can take it Lily,” Strange snapped back. “You have people worried about you. You keep pushing them away, wanting to protect them but what you don’t realize is that they are just as scared for you as you are for them. While you’re protecting us… who’s protecting you?” Strange didn’t have anything to say for that one. Instead she remained silent and agitated. “This isn’t up for discussion Lily” Lily pushes herself up off the ground and gets close up to Strange “I’m my own damn woman! I think I’ll make my own choices thank you very much. If you want to kick me out, that’s fine. Remember that I’m not going to let go of this so easily. Either I’m with you and you can ‘keep me safe’ to justify keeping me here because you can’t get past that big ego of yours or I’ll just keep following you around anyways at my own leisure. I’m sure that won’t attract any attention, right?” Strange shifted back uncomfortably. Lily did hold a power over Strange that grounded her and made her feel less like a hero and more like a person that just screwed up. “That’s irrational!” “I’ll show you irrational alright. Hold on” Lily digs quickly inside her purse and pulls out her compact mirror for her make up. She clicks it open and shines Strange’s reflection back at her. “You can’t get any more irrational than this right here!” She clicks her mirror back down and stomps her stiletto. She was clearly pushed to her own limits. She was insanely intelligent but her lack of real world experience was beginning to show in her maturity. “Grah!” Strange couldn’t remember a time she was this frustrated. This argument was turning dumb real quick. “I’ll let you stay for a little while, okay!? God damn it Lily! If it gets crazy at all though, you gotta leave.” Lily puts a hand on her hips and pushes her finger out close to Strange’s face. “I can handle my own little girl. Stop worrying” “You’re like a year old, I’m older than you!” “You don’t act like it” Giving up, Strange turns around and begins to walk away. Both end up sitting back down again to cool off. Just before she can dive into her own thoughts, Lily’s voice echoes from where she was at, “And you haven’t even told me your real name yet!” She grumbles and leans over to lay on her side. She just wanted to show Lily the stars and tell some stories here and there. She didn’t want a big argument on how much of a terrible friend she’s been. She laid down in discomfort. The ground was hard and there was a nip in the air. Why mom would generate a nip in the air was beyond. Could have been her teasing or possibly it was mom’s way of saying Lily was right. That idea of her being right sat with her for awhile. It was the last thing she wanted to consider. The implications alone made her feel sick. She wish she could simply pop on over to Namek and ignore her feelings with a beach day but as it stands, Mom needs her usual cool down before travel and Lily wasn’t going to let her forget. A good time passes as Strange begins to actually notice the stars again. She had some time to think back to when Lily and her first met. She giggled to herself remembering the hassle of swapping clothing and how interesting the rest of the guys were to talk to. She was worried about them and more often enough wondered how things played out afterwards for the people who survived but she hated go back to Jewel and would rather not relive the memories. Still, it was hard to not remember on those moments where she really needed to kick up her power. Those times when she needed to draw on Omega to get the job done. Something she achieved after watching Lily get slowly crushed to death. The thought gave her a knot in her stomach, looking back and seeing her face in pain. The guilt out weighed the pride for Strange. She slowly gets back up and walks over to Lily who sat facing away but clearly got a glimpse of Strange. She crossed her arms, still looking mad. “Lily… I’m… uh…” this was surprisingly harder than anticipated. “Look, I’m sorry, okay? I don’t really get around people that much and I can probably, well… say things that aren’t alright.” Lily looked up to Strange and could see there was more she wanted to say. “It’s just weird for me. It’s not like I don’t want company but I’m also scared. I’m kind of scared of you, please don’t be offended” “Why would you be scared of me?” “Well… I don’t know. I just… When I saw you for the first time in a year and you did the kiss thing, it threw me off, okay? I’m still new with the concept of friends and its like, that was complicated enough. Then there’s this and a gut feeling like it can be more than that. I don’t understand it and I don’t get it so I’m afraid of it and its scary because I don’t know how I feel about it-” “shhhh. Just calm down. I get it, it was a bit too much for you. Stop thinking so hard about it though. Here, make it simple for yourself. Do you like me?” Strange scratches her head “I don’t know. I mean I liked you back then but I don’t know like… how far?” “But you did like me right?” “Yeah” “Well I like you. How does that make you feel?” “I guess kind of good. It’s nice to be liked” “Did you like the kiss?” “I..” her face reddened up, avoiding eye contact and still scratching her head. “It happened kind of fast. I was too shocked to really tell” She gets up and leans close to Strange. “Do you think you might want another one?” “I-I don’t really… I don’t know? Maybe?” Strange began to go numb, not really holding much control. “Then work for it” she moves away walking back towards the tower. Strange felt a sudden rush of relief wash over her yet somehow felt more confused than ever. |
