Dallas didn’t know how it always managed to happen, but some serious stuff had apparently gone down while he slept. When last he checked, the dragonball locator had only indicated a single black star dragonball on New Vegeta. This latest glance at the device showed four of them, all grouped together. He knew that could only mean one thing: someone else was hunting the black star dragonballs, and they’d beaten him to the one on this planet.

For whatever reason, Dallas hadn’t stopped to consider this possibility until seeing the number on the radar. He debated on what his next move should be. If the person had already found over half the black star balls, they were most likely equipped with a device similar to his. That meant that they would probably be able to tell that he was carrying one of the remaining black star balls; he would most likely be running into whoever the other dragonball hunter was very shortly.

He looked at the little green screen again. The blip of four dragonballs on the radar didn’t appear to be moving, which meant that he was probably safe for the time being. Perhaps if he stowed the ball somewhere and went to scope out his competition, he could get back to it before the person could find it… but there was no guarantee that the person would let him go unnoticed. The Konatsian teen groaned with frustration. “This complicates things,” he whined aloud to himself. A long moment passed before a familiar grin spread across his face, signalling that he’d come to a decision. ”Screw it. If whoever that is wants my dragonball, they can come and fight me for it.”

“I wouldn’t be so hasty, if I were you.”

Dallas whirled around, drawing his gun as he caught sight of the person who had just spoken. He wore dark, form-fitting clothes with a high, loose collar that obscured the lower half of his face. “Where the hell did you just come from?” Dallas demanded, his voice coming out slightly higher than he would have liked.

“Calm down, I’m here to help,” the man spoke calmly.

Dallas shot a glance at the dragon radar, noting at least that the man was not carrying any dragonballs. Not that that comforted him. “Help how?”

“You are a Konatsian, are you not?”

“I could be.”

“Do you carry the instrument of your people?” The stranger tilted his head, looking over the teen’s shoulder at his pack.

“What, the ocarina? Yeah, I have one. I don’t use it much.” Without letting go of his gun, Dallas removed his pack and pulled out the small wind instrument that was inextricably linked to his race’s history and culture. He noticed that the man had taken the opportunity to take out his own instrument, a small handheld harp. “We starting a band or something?”

“I want to teach you a song of power,” the man said simply. “You may call me Seeker, if you wish, though that is my clan and not my name. I assume you know the basic melody that all Konatsians are taught from adolescence?”

“Well, yeah. Like you just said, every Konatsian knows at least that one song.” Dallas put his gun away and played the simple tune, feeling it energize him as was its intended purpose. The melody was one often heard before battles, or so his father told him.

“Good. Now listen closely. This is a variation of what you just played, but the composition grants its player with greater strength, fortitude, and agility than the one you know.” The mysterious stranger played a series of notes slowly, then repeated them. “Do you follow?”

The music drifted into Dallas’s mind and he quickly analyzed it, his sensitive ears easily picking out the proper notes and committing them to memory as he converted them to the appropriate ones for his instrument. Lifting the ocarina to his mouth, he played the song back to the man. The two repeated the same string of notes for a while as Dallas began to feel the music’s effects, then Seeker began to play a harmony that seemed to amplify the energy generated by Dallas’s ocarina. The teen stopped after a last repetition, simply letting the melody work its magic on him. He grinned. “That feels awesome. Thanks, Seeker.”

“It is my duty,” the man replied. “Before I take my leave, a word of warning. The man who currently holds most of the black star dragonballs is much stronger than you, even now. You would do well to avoid a conflict with him.”

“If he wants a fight, I’ll give him one. Simple as that.”

“Your destiny lies elsewhere, Dallas.”

“Wait, how do you know my name?”

“That is of no importance.” The man levelled his gaze at the boy. “If you really wish to complete the quest you were given, go now and live to fight another day.”

“Where should I go, then?”

The man turned, the harp disappearing from his hands. “To Earth.”
