“You’ve finally made it home,” Elena Vess said to her son as they embraced. “I was beginning to think you wouldn’t find us.” “Ah, Sister Elena. I had no idea that our new little brother was your son.” Brother Henri gave her a respectful nod. “Where’s Dad?” Dario asked, pulling away to look around. It was strange for him to accept the hug from his mother. Considering how things ended when last they had seen each other, he was having a hard time figuring out how he felt about their reunion. He was relieved to see her, of course, but she was more welcoming than he had anticipated. He had left home in defiance of her and his father, after all. He scanned the passersby for his other parent’s face and wondered whether he would give an equally positive welcome. “Is he… wherever you’re staying? Do you live nearby?” “Your father is recovering from the latest tests he’s undergone,” Elena said with a smile. “You can go and see him later if you want, but have you already met with Brother Mentik?” “We were just on our way to see if our good brother was in for a quick meeting, actually.” The Tuffles smiled at each other and Dario realized with a muted sort of horror that their expressions were almost identical. There was a vacancy in their eyes when they spoke, except when they mentioned Mentik, and the shared cult mentality of the other Tuffles unnerved him. Whatever their leader was planning, it was clearly imperative that everyone in the underground agreed with his decisions without question. “Ah, I was just with him to give him an update on my husband’s condition. He should still be in, though he said he might be expecting someone.” “What happened to him?” Dario asked, concerned with the nonchalant way the other Tuffle spoke of his father’s health. His mother mentioned tests, and Mentik. Did whatever was happening to his father tie in with the Tuffle leader’s plans? “Brother Stephan has volunteered to help us all by helping Brother Mentik to perfect his latest work,” Jacques spoke up suddenly. His companion frowned a bit. “Brother,” Henri chided. “Let Brother Mentik be the one to explain his great works to our young brother here. Come, if we hurry perhaps we can meet him before whoever it is he might be expecting.” “Right,” Dario agreed. The more information he got, the worse he felt about being underground with the entire rest of the Tuffle population. He had to talk Mentik out of whatever he was planning. “Mom, we’ll catch up more later, okay?” “May Brother Mentik welcome you,” she said, and smiled her empty smile. --- “Brother Mentik?” Henri knocked at the door to Mentik Ferdinand’s dwelling, a small house apart from the various apartment complexes around the underground city. “We have a newcomer here to meet you.” “Ah yes, come in, come in. I’ve been expecting you.” Mentik beckoned the three men to enter, his voice coming through the door. “You have?” asked Dario skeptically as they walked in. “Of course,” Mentik said with a smile. Unlike Henri, Jacques, and his mother, the leader’s smile had an edge to it. Dario didn’t like it any better. “Brothers, you can go about your business. I have some time to chat with our newest family member.” Once Henri and Jacques left, Mentik gave Dario a sly look and motioned for the boy to follow him into the next room. Dario reluctantly followed. “So, Dario, are you here to join the family?” By his look and tone, and the omission of the prevalent sibling title that the other Tuffles insisted on using, it was obvious that Mentik knew the answer to that already. “Oh, don’t look so surprised. Your parents spoke of you when they first arrived, and as the Tuffle leader I make it my business to know all of my surviving brethren. You were quite the sensation last year, getting involved with the war. You and your… friend. Strange, was it?” Dario tensed at the mention of her name. “We did what we had to do.” “Ah, see, I understand that. And your father, he understands that too. And what we have to do, Dario, is to take back what was stolen from us all those years ago.” “And how do ‘we’ plan to do that?” “It’s simple. You knew as well as I do that our race’s strength is in science. Technology. You yourself have undergone both the Zeta and Omega injections, so you know what I mean. What I’ve been developing, in brief, is a virus. It is airborne, and it is deadly to Saiyans. If testing continues to go well, it will be completely harmless to Tuffles.” “So you’re going to use the genocide of our ancestors to justify killing billions of members of a different race? How does that make you any better than the Saiyans who fought for Vegeta back then?” “I don’t need to prove that I’m better than them,” Mentik laughed. “By virtue of not being an animalistic brute, I already am.” “And you really expect me to stand back and watch you do this?” Dario could feel the rage building inside of him as the conversation progressed, but he forced it down. He didn’t know what the other man was capable of, so resorting to violence would probably not be the wisest decision. “Honestly?” Mentik had been slowly walking around the room with his hands behind his back, but he stopped and turned to face the younger Tuffle. “No. Now as you can imagine, it has been difficult at times for me to convince everyone that this is a good idea--” “Because it’s not.” “And as a result of that,” Ferdinand continued, ignoring the interruption, “word has reached the Monkey King that someone is stirring up people to revolt against him. I can’t have that hindering my plans.” “If you think I’m going to help you in any way, you’re wrong.” “You have no say in the matter,” Mentik replied. Dario felt a sudden prick at the base of his neck, and his vision blurred. Through the fog settling in his mind as he dropped to his knees, he heard Mentik say “Give Vegeta my regards, won’t you?” --- Dario regained consciousness in ki dampening shackles just in time to be tossed onto the floor of King Vegeta’s throne room. The Saiyan ruler, already enraged, stood and approached him. “So it’s true,” he said in a furious whisper. “This is the man who dares to try and attack my people? This child?” “I don’t want to--” “I am speaking,” Vegeta snarled. “And you will pay dearly for your supposed cause.” Dario had little time to wonder what the king meant by that. He was still groggy from the tranquilizer Mentik had used, and though he had no idea how it had come to this, he knew it was the Tuffle leader’s doing somehow. To his surprise, King Vegeta ordered for his restraints to be removed. Any relief from that turn of events quickly vanished as the proud king of Saiyans unsheathed his custom blade and pointed it towards him. “Alright, you whelp! Today I will make an example of you, so all who would oppose me will know the full breadth of my wrath!” [cue battle] [1227/ |
