Oh boy,” Ava said quietly, staring up into the gaping hole right through what had once been the engine on the cruiser they’d used to get to the planet New Vegeta. Stepping over the gash in the ground their less than perfect landing had left behind, she raked a hand through her long dark hair, a grave expression on her face. They wouldn’t be getting off that planet the same way the pair of them had arrived, at least, not without an entirely new engine, or a new ship - and she knew the latter wasn’t about to happen anytime soon. The good news? They’d made it to the ground in one piece, but looking around the backdrop of the new Saiyan homeworld, she had little to no idea where they actually were. Only the coordinates on her communicator told her how far the nearest city was, but she could warrant a guess that they were somewhere on the outskirts of the Wastelands, which was definitely not a good thing. A look skyward at the sun beating down on them helped her calculate the hours left in the day at a glance, but at this rate, they weren’t going to accomplish what had brought them there in the first place.

Does it look any better from the inside?” she called out, pulling the edges of her black jacket in together over her chest so she could zip it up the front with a practiced pull, straightening the edges of her collar. The question was directed to her partner still on the inside, though from outward appearances she looked to be alone. It was her hope they their situation wasn’t as dire as it seemed.

If by better you mean a clean shot through the engine and into the portside stabilizers then, yes. Much, much better.” General Gold stepped out of the bisected engine onto the dusty Wastelands where they had managed to crash land. It was not the best performance of Gold’s aeronautical career, but it got them to the Saiyan homeworld in one piece. There were several problems with their current situation, the first being that they were without transportation off of New Vegeta. Another issue -- which would become more pressing as the time passed -- was their assailant had only injured the part of the ship necessary to bring them down. That was a trademark pattern of someone or someones looking to liberate the ship of its owners and possibly any property contained inside the ship or its occupants. Gold’s face curled into a disapproving frown as he took a look over their downed cruiser.

Pirates,” he spat. Pirates in general were rarely a good thing to encounter in space, but Saiyan pirates were notoriously some of the worst of the profession. Bundle all of the aggression, honor, and pride you can find into a group of spacefaring rebels with a penchant for thievery and the results were very scary. It was fortunate that humans did not discover space travel until after they had a sufficient force to counteract the Saiyan race. The blonde General slipped his hands into the pockets of the dark-colored slacks he wore. His cloak was trimmed with deep gray fur that made him look more regal than some military man. A fashion of clothing that he would have complained about five years ago was much more natural to him now.

We’re going to have to get moving soon. The royalty asked us to help them locate some staff belonging to one of their heroes. Technically, our greatest hero as well. Still can’t believe they let something like that slip away, but whomever stole it must have been good. Figures we would get shot down right after the transmission. If I had not managed to jump start the ship after they hit us with the ion blasts we would be having a different conversation with more company. Way I see it, we have two options. Get moving now and hope to find a small village in the middle of this dusty shithole, or we wait and see who decides to come and inspect our wreckage. Might just be the people responsible for putting us here in the first place. If it is? We’ve found ourselves a new ship.

Whether it was just for getting out of the Wastelands or off the planet, a new vehicle was much better than their wounded cruiser. Gold turned his green gaze onto his partner, waiting for her input into their tactical options. Either way they were playing a game against time -- the Wastelands were notorious for being brutal once the sun went down. Far worse than pirates went bump in the night on New Vegeta.

Ava watched him make that exit from the ship with a somber expression, wriggling her nose as she contemplated the options set forth before them. She knew where her strengths were, and they didn’t involve trudging headlong into the desert hoping that there may or may not be some kind of a small outpost they could find some shelter in. Calculating the odds, they weren’t in their favor. “If it were me, I would wait,” she commented after a moment, shifting that bright blue of her gaze onto Gold again, crossing her arms over her chest. “We know they’re coming to us, eventually, sooner rather than later to keep other poachers from cleaning up what they shot down. We hold the advantage here,” she continued, looking at the rocky cliffs they had only just narrowly avoided on their way down. Ava’s keen eye was already showing her a number of strategic locations they could hide to get the jump on anyone who came looking.

At least if we’re smart about it, we will.” She slipped a hand into the pocket of her jacket, withdrawing her pack of capsules from which she pulled a familiar one, palming the weight of it. “I’ll get moving. It’s a bit of a climb, but I think we should split up, keep them guessing how many of us there are. I may have a few tricks up my sleeve to help with that.” She flashed him another look before she turned and jogged off towards the base of the crag, looking up the distance before she tucked her capsule back into her pocket and set her hands onto the rocks. Her climb started slow and picked up with surprising speed and agility, until she disappeared behind the rocks a portion of the way up.

Hours passed while they set their little trap for their unwelcome pirate friends. Gold took the time to burn a few more holes into the engine so a nice column of black smoke sailed into the afternoon sky of New Vegeta. Still, it took time for another resembling a craft arrived at the wreckage site. The first sign of visitors -- other than the ki signatures -- was the circular motion of grains of sand not far from where the EMF cruiser was resting on the heated bed of sand. One arm was raised to Gold’s face to cover the blast of granules that came when an intra-planetary transport landed fifty or so feet from his location. Several figures climbed out of the ship, most of them wearing a mix of salvaged armor blended in with traditional pirate gear one might see in some sort of Earth movie.

At least they know how to commit to a theme,” Gold commented after spotting their attire. The Lightning General was sitting on the top of the downed cruiser, one arm stretched over a knee and the other resting by his side. It was a completely relaxed position that showed he was not worried in the least. One of the group of three stepped forward, a male with a black bandana that depicted a full moon, and looked over the relaxing human. A natural scowl was on the Saiyan’s face that went perfectly with the scar over his all-white left eye.

Stranded, pal? he asked, gaining a chuckle from the rest of the crew behind him.

Gold stretched his hands out to show he was not armed, and combined with his fancy style of dress it was easy to assume he was some sort of wealthy person or aristocrat. “Normally I don’t answer questions that are plain to see, but you are at a disadvantage with the obvious so I will confirm your suspicion.

Silence followed as the insult was registered and the Saiyan’s scowl deepened. “Search the damn ship! Take anything of value and leave the comedian to me!

Gold wore the same smirk on his face as when he replied to the pirate’s rhetorical question. Most if not all humans had signatures that were readily available to sense, but the best they would get from the blonde General was the strength of a small animal. Years of experimentation and the subsequent result gifted anyone like Gold with a ki signature that was minute until their abilities were being used. It definitely had its advantages when it came to situations such as the one before Gold.

Everything inside is charred!” reported the younger looking male of the trio.

The stuff inside? Well, you see, I’m not very good with these fancy machines. So I figured something went wrong. You know what they say about monkeys and wrenches,” Gold shrugged.

The last comment was enough to switch the objective from theft to murder. A crimson and gold pole was produced from a sheath on the lead pirate’s back. His charge was swift and surprisingly accurate, yet Gold did not move an inch from his relaxed posture. “I’ll show you what they say about monkeys and poles!

The sound of that first shot was like thunder in the air, roaring from a distance as a volatile orb of ki crossed the distance at surprising speed from the other side of the cruiser where they were standing. As though with a mind of its own, it arched around the ship and struck the third, unsuspecting bandit right through the back, blowing a nice fist sized hole right out the front of him. His look of surprise followed him all the way to the ground where his blood mingled with the sand. As sudden as the first shot rang out, a second followed, this one from the opposite direction as it arced around the cruiser and hit the second, younger Saiyan standing in the open doorway of the ship through the shoulder - not a death strike, but strong enough to throw him out the front and into the sand beside his fallen comrade.

Monkeys and poles, that’s original,” she said with annoyance through her communicator, though only Gold would hear her. “Be sure you tell them they’re surrounded. I have a nice shot from up here, right on the back of this bastard’s head. He can find another pole to play with, maybe even his boyfriend’s down there.” Ava’s voice was cool and collected, as she leaned her face against the barrel of her rifle, two others just like it set up beside her and rigged to go off with a yank of a chain she’d tied around their triggers that were now laying just inches from her steadied hands. She didn’t need to aim when she could control the trajectory of the bullet from the outside - conveniently. “Please, by all means, give me a reason to pull the trigger.

Whether it was the thunderclap that came from the high-caliber rifle or Gold’s sudden spike in ki that surprised the charging Saiyan was unknown. One finger guarded the General from the downward strike that was attempting to split his skull. Golden sparks of electricity coursed through that digit, crackling with energy that could send weaker beings into severe shock. His green eyes bore a hole into the obsidian hues of the lead pirate. “My friends really don’t like it when people try to rob me and kill me. Might have done better choosing one or the other. By the way, you’re surrounded. Drop the staff and it is time for my favorite part of these encounters: Q and A.

Moonless skies always made Gold wary at night. There was only starlight to navigate by without the nice reflection of the sun’s brilliance. He was leaning against the inside of the pirate craft that had been used to bring their would-be robbers to their location. Ava guided them through the desert further away from the capital city. Their mission had fortunately been completed when the infamous weapon they were asked to recover was brought to them. Gold -- like most people -- did not like being robbed or having attempts on his life. Their next objective was more of a personal matter than anything sent to them by Command. Due to it being un-official, Gold was making sure they had some backup in case shit hit the fan.

Long time,” he said into his communication device, “I’m going to need to ask you for another ride.
