Sit down and let me tell you a tale.

It all begins in Babel, on a blue marble of a planet named Earth. The people of earth, as all children, started out simple. But with age came desire. Man banded together to reach into the heavens. To reach into God’s domain is hubris beyond recourse. But God does not exact his own vengeance. The subtle workings of the world disallow that.

The agents of hell and the underworld gladly accept the tax such acts hubris exact. The seas smashed upon the shore, collecting a tithe of citizens into the water realm. Fire storms rained down on high, incinerating the workers, paying hell’s toll. The Plane of fire did not want souls however. They wanted bodies. Living, breathing bodies. So they created servents of sand and air, baked in the high sun. The Djinn. Afrit Shaitan, one of their number, was not aware of his purpose at first. He was a simple creature of artificial flesh. But he soon took to his purpose. He gathered the humans in the droves, and herded them into the fire realm. They say that humanity was so broken that day that their language fractured, splitting into hundreds of different varieties. The one true tongue is only spoken by very few now.

The City of Brass rose up from that initial tithe of slaves. The Efreeti and the Djinn they had created became one race married by magic. With the ability to grant wishes to mortal, each could personally solve the mundane problems of being alive in the universe. This power was accompanied by a natural predisposition towards avarice, rage, jealousy, and outright battlerage. The City of Brass rose, not as a beacon of hope for humanity, but as a means to exact control over the mortal masses in order extract more wealth for the Plane of Fire.

Afit Shaitan served as a cog in this rise to power.A skilled soldier and commander, Shaitan became a valuable asset to the Sultan of the Brass City. With power came great favor. Shaitan enjoyed the finest of prostitutes, The best opiates that trade brought in, and the lavish accommodations that being in the Sultan’s favor granted.

Shaitan was prized for his ruthlessness on the field of combat. Those that held no value to the Fire Plane where quickly executed, others who held valuable pieces where given feasts and goods. A shrewd politician in his own right, The Djinn believed he could surpass even the Sultan. You see, in the City of Brass, betrayal is expected. Those that do no sense the knife approaching their back are weak, and not deserving of power. If you are caught in betrayal, you would be imprisoned, at the sultan’s request, in a lamp. Lamps served as a prison for the essence of d Djinn. Nothing was more loathsome then being found by some mortal and forced to become a wish granter.

Shaitan organized a coup. He made an unforgivable mistake in the eyes of his Sultan, and his people however. He used the slaves as a flesh army to assault the Sultan’s keep. And to his credit, It nearly worked. Had it, the dishonor would have never been a concern, and a new precedent for open rebellion may have been established. But it was not. To use filthy Humans was unforgivable. Better a silent blade in the night, poison at dinner, or a betrayal by a personal Efreeti Guard.
The Efreeti stripped Afrit of his power and imprisoned him in a lamp. While most Djinn are allowed to return if they are ever freed of their lamps, Shaitan did not receive this blessing. He would forever be severed from his home plane.

The lamp made its way from Earth, to the Alpha Collective during a cultural exchange with the changelings. The entire deal ended up being a faud, and while humanity received fake changeling relics, Black Market dealers sold the antiques across the known universe. Afrit’s lamp’s final destination was to New Vegeta right as it was being colonized. For generations, a Saiyan family huddled together for the light it provided on the dark moonless nights. It was not until an irresponsible Saiyan youth smashed in the lamp did Shaitan experience freedom for the first time in centuries.
