The General
--et up you smelly human piece of shit!

A world of darkness was waiting to greet the green eyes of Gold when he heard the demanding and insulting voice. His ears were berated with the roar of a monstrous, excited crowd. The next thing to come back to him was his memories of what in the hell was happening to him. A number of images flooded his mind, most of them involved pink bodies invading Glacier’s spaceship. A quick brawl ensued along with Gold being suddenly teleported from the Ever Victorious onto a world of darkness. The General had no idea a technique like that even existed, let alone how it worked. From there it was trudging through the abyss of whatever planet he was on until ---

I said. GET. UP!

Out of the darkness a hand reached out and grabbed Gold by the cranium, lifting him off of his crouched posture on the ground. Not being able to see was a hell of a challenge even to someone would could sense the ki around him. His feet left the ground and his sense of smell was engaged with a waft of foul darkness. Hot breath blew over his face, causing him to grimace from the rancid smell of corrupted air. It was the jeering crowd that jogged his combat instincts and he remembered he was in a fight for his life. Muscle memory took over as Gold sent a foot towards the middle of the entity that was keeping him suspended in the air. A howl of surprised pain echoed out over that of the crowd and Gold was free.

Dark-jins. That’s right. I’m in prison. A prison of complete darkness. This is the third one of them they’ve sent for me today. Some sort of arena for entertainment and placing bets. My left rib cage has two broken bones and I can’t feel anything on the left side of my face. Have to focus…

Gold grit his teeth when the pain flooded his brain’s nerve center. All of the spots he remembered were injured pulsed like heated spikes stabbing through him. The time to lick his wound had to come later as his opponent was recovering from the sudden kick to the sternum. Without vision, Gold was forced to track the movement of his foe with all of his other senses. Out of nowhere, the General ducked down and cleanly evaded a massive fist aimed at his head. Lightning quick reflexes brought his body upwards in a mighty punch that connected with the Dark-jin’s chin. A loud crackle echoed as a short spark of lightning flashed, illuminating the pitch black arena for a brief moment. Unconsciousness stole the Dark-jin’s thunder, sending him off of his feet and down onto his back like an oak falling in the forest. A resounding thud boomed out in the arena, silencing the crowd.

Your breath gave away that one…

Gold exhaled as the crowd erupted in an angry fit, tossing food and metallic cans down at the lone human. All of the makeshift projectiles were zapped by an invisible shield of golden lightning that hovered around the General. He dropped down to one knee, unable to remain standing with all of his injuries. A moment’s reprieve was not granted to him. Two guards lifted him up by the arms, paying no mind to the damage he sustained during his gauntlet of fights. Gold clenched his teeth, not giving the Dark-jins the pleasure of hearing him groan in pain. He focused his senses on the number of steps he was dragged along and what direction they turned.

After one hundred and twenty-three steps, a prison cell awaited the wounded human. Both guards tossed him into the room, letting the cold darkness of the floor greet him on impact. Gold remained on the ground, eyes wide open but still seeing nothing around him. His mind told him to use his ki to illuminate his surroundings, but he remembered what happened the first time he attempted to do such a thing. These Dark-jin were monsters that fed on ki, especially with it was brilliant and nothing was more bright than lightning. Gold was in hell. Most people thought it was a place with hot fires and dancing demons. Now he knew that hell was dark, cold, and hungry.

An unknown amount of minutes passed by while Gold rested on the stone floor of the prison. Compared to the battles he went through in the previous hours, the floor felt like a mattress made out of clouds. His memory triggered his body to action. There was a bed in the cell somewhere -- a stone slab elevated off of the ground. Perhaps it was the concept of the object that made him crawl his way to the horrible excuse for a resting place. On a bed he could get more rest -- at least that’s what his mind told him. A shaky hand grabbed the edge of the cold surface, allowing him to pull himself up so he could roll onto the hard rectangle. Even with his feet hanging off the sides, it somehow felt better than being on the floor.

Communication device is jammed… ribs are busted… eye is likely swollen to all hell… fantastic situation. If I could jus-

Gold’s thoughts were interrupted by the dark rumbling of a presence in his cell. The sound of movement made the General push himself up to a sitting position. It hurt to used his left arm too much, so he was saving it from when he really needed it. He stretched out with his senses, keeping his thoughts to himself while he scanned for whatever was now in his cell. Another deep rumble informed him that the unknown was closer. It was not until he felt the darkness itself move that Gold knew it was a living, breathing being.

Darkness is not your friend, human,” spoke the voice in the dark.

Tell me something I don’t know…” replied Gold.

Very well… I’ve been sent here to ensure the warden wins the next round of bets. I respect your endurance, human. Unfortunately, I will have to sap you of even that. I hope your resolve remains in your spirit, because your energy belongs to me.

The General tried to roll off of the bed. Anything to get away from the ki leech that was going to try to drain him dry. His lateral movement stopped thanks to a strong grip on his left arm. Lancing heat known as pain spiked through his body. This time he did cry out in agony as the hand pulled on his limb, forcing his busted rib cage to try to expand to compensate. Gold saw stars despite the infinite blackness around him. Energy -- what little he had -- began to leave him and flow into the Dark-jin placed in his cell. Unconsciousness threatened to take him from a mixture of fatigue and damage. Gold closed his right hand, hanging on to staying alert until he channeled his energy into that closed fist. Unlike others, Gold’s ki was hard to detect when he was not using his lightning. If he could just hold on to that small bundle of energy in his right hand…

. . .

Noise was the first thing that Gold recognized when his eyes opened up to the world of void. His cell door was being opened and he knew what was coming next. Two hands from different Dark-jins lifted Gold off of the bed without ceremony.

Time to fight, human, announced one of the guards.

They dragged him down the long hallway towards the arena. Jeers and taunts were spat at the weakened, exhausted Gold as he was carried to what some considered his death bed. One hundred and twenty-three steps later he was tossed into the ring that he spent hours in the previous day -- or what seemed like a day. This time he did not hear the crowd’s yells or taunts. Instead, he felt the quiet silence of impending doom all around him. The ground shook as the footsteps of his next opponent grew near. Gold’s legs wobbled as he strained to remain on his feet while the Dark-jin marched down the hallway opposite of the one where Gold was carried down.

A low growl announced the arrival of the largest Dark-jin that Gold had faced while he was on the planet. The crowd suddenly erupted into a loud series of cheers and celebration. Apparently, this individual monster was well known in the prison. No doubt the warden’s champion and prized fighter. The General had certainly given them plenty of entertainment as no one expected him to last a full day of fighting Dark-jin. Now they were sending the executioner to end the fun and get the victory that they were craving since the start.

The absurdity of his situation caused Gold to let out a small chuckle. He nodded a few times, accepting that the odds were going to continually be stacked against him. There was no way out of the impending doom other than going right through it.

Alright...alright…” Gold murmured.

He finally opened the right hand that he kept closed since the previous night and felt the relief of ki flooding through his limbs. It was not much, but it was better than being completely empty. His green eyes did him no good in the darkness even as they opened wider with power. Gold must have surprised the huge Dark-jin, because his opponent roared in confusion and anger. A savage punch was tossed at Gold, forcing him to weave to the outside to evade the straight. He counterattacked with a snappiness that the crowd, warden, and champion did not expect. Two thundering claps of punches landed on the Dark-jin’s chest.
Both strikes made the champion monster stagger backwards. He lashed out with a reactive swipe of his hand, hoping to catch Gold hanging out near him. The air was empty of the human’s body, leaving the Dark-jin wondering where his opponent was hiding. A deep sniff revealed nothing and he waited to see what his foe was going to do. Golden sparks flashed to the right of the massive Dark-jin, flashing light through all of the arena. He immediately snapped his attention in the direction of the burst of ki. One lunge cleared the distance, causing him to land where the burst of golden energy went off. All that greeted him was a lightning bolt across the top of his head. The impact rocked the arena, bringing the hulking champion down to his knees.

Gold appeared floating above the Dark-jin with both hands clasped and hoisted high above his head. He channeled all of his strength into a trio of double axe hammer smashes down onto the top of the Dark-jin’s skull. Each blow brought a louder roar from the crowd, until the final strike rendered the monster completely limp. His head hung down low between his shoulders, possibly from a cracked vertebrae near the top of his spine. Either way it was the end of the fight for Gold and their prison champion. Anything extended could have been the end of the General, so he bet it all on a bit of diversion and it payed off big.

Right before he could exhale in partial relief an explosion rocked the entire prison. Gold was through against the wall of the arena, looking around out of habit to try to see where the danger was coming from. Another blast rocked the very foundation of the prison again, keeping Gold slumped against the wall. The crowd was in a panic as they had no idea what was going on. Their celebrated champion forgotten in the chaos of confusion, all of the gathered audience were rushing for the exits. A gaping hole was blown in the wall of the arena, forcing the frigid air of Dark Star to rush inside.

The wind of freedom revitalized Gold’s body as he made his way from the newly created exit. Kami blessed him with the opportunity to escape the vicious hell that he was all around him. Dark Star was indeed very dark, but even the light of stars from space was brighter than the abyssal black that the filled the prison. The steady flow of light hurt Gold’s one good eye, causing him to wince while he slowly hobbled towards his shot at freedom.

Alarms blared out over the entire prison, indicating that more chaos was ensuing inside of the incarceration facility. The human saw guards rushing by him -- a forgotten piece of entertainment -- towards the deeper parts of the prison. Yet another blast tossed Gold forward onto his stomach with a painful impact. He kept his teeth pressed together as to not make a sound that could draw attention to him. He grabbed at the ground, using his strength to push himself up from the cold floor. It felt like an eternity for him to stand back up and start his march once more.

The General breathed a sigh of relief when he breached the makeshift exit, feeling the cold, fresh air of Dark Star surround him. All of his wounds ached at once, contorting into one ball of agonizing sensation. Regardless, Gold activated his communication device now that it was not jammed from the walls of the Sector 10 prison. He hoped that Ava or Glacier’s fate had been better than his. Just about anything was better than the empty void where he had been imprisoned for the past few days.

Vibration made the ground behind Gold tremble, causing him to stumble forward. What he thought was an explosion, revealed its true form when it landed several feet in front of him. With the tiny amount of light coming down from the stars, Gold could see what was blocking his path. He easily remembered the huge frame of the monster that was growling at him with dark intent. Gold had just killed him no less than five minutes ago. His weary eyes glanced over the rejuvenated Dark-jin in confusion. It was only when he saw a stylized ‘M” on the monster’s forehead that he felt his stomach drop.

I hate this place…

Gold dropped down to his knees after the revived monster was defeated. His chest was heaving and the golden nimbus of lightning around him faded. Both hands hit the ground to stop himself from fully collapsing. His final assault on the Majin Dark-jin was just enough for him to survive. The General rolled onto his back and stared at the star-dotted sky. Other monsters were no doubt fleeing the prison and making their way into the darkness. Gold honestly did not have enough energy to keep going. His left hand clutched the last remnants of the reborn shadow fiend. A core of pure darkness that slowly absorbed itself into the resting human. He was so exhausted that he did not even feel the ore merging with him. His mind was focused on breathing and mustering up enough energy to not bleed out.
