VOID leaned against the wall in Sector 10; the three feet of concrete protecting him from the darkness. He was staring into the lights; the treasure he had found was something that he couldn't keep safe on this planet. He needed to find a way out as he had tried several times to escape with Instant Transmission, but for some reason, it wasn't working. Must be because of the same thing jamming his signal on his GPS. Still, he needed a way off this planet before the Dark-jin found the treasure they worked so hard to protect. Suddenly, he came back to the world and noticed a commotion going on near the north gate. He slowly made his way there to see what the fuss was about. "I swear, we saw it! a large mountain of wrecked ships! Almost as tall as Mount Everest!" said a human prisoner back with his squad from their reconnaissance mission. "What's Mount Everest...?" said a Saiyan prisoner from the same squad. "It's... a mountain... on Earth. Why do I have to explain it to you? You saw how tall it was!" the human said with a broken, frustrated look on his face. "I guess, but I've never seen Mount Everest before, so how can I know if you're doing this mountain justice with such a comparison. GUYS, IT WAS AS HIGH AS MOUNT VEGETA!!!" "Which Mount Vegeta?" said a confused Saiyan in the crowd that was growing larger as the conversation was getting dumber. "The big one!" All of the Saiyans 'oooh'd' and 'awed'; everyone else (VOID included) simultaneously face palmed. Finally, a scientist of the group (heavy on the sarcasm), asked the question that should have been asked several minutes ago when the topic was first brought up. "Well, where did it come from?" "Not sure myself, there are signs that show the ships were dragged along the surrounding desert sand and piled on top, one after the next. I'm no scientist (You think so?), but maybe it's some kind of magnetic field that dragged them all in. Only... that mountain wasn't there yesterday when we were on our patrol..." VOID filtered through the dumb shit and became strangely curious what could have brought such a peculiar ship graveyard to shape in less than a day on this planet which was only sixteen hours. It certainly wasn't magnets. He approached the Saiyan and Human and asked them to show him the graveyard. They heartily agreed and showed him the way. More than his curiosity, though, he was hoping one of those ships could start running; solving his problem. Even before his very eyes, VOID had a hard time believing what he was seeing. The comparisons to Mount Everest weren't far off as an exaggeration of such would be considered. It was massive in scale, and some of the ships that were on this pile were rather large as well. VOID looked back at the squad and thanked them for showing him the way, and sent them on their way back to Sector 10. The android was going to stay back and investigate the mountain and see if he could find what could build something like this. VOID walked toward the base of the mountain; the larger ships made up the base of it. Of course they were out of commission. Most had buckled under the massive weight of all of those ships on top of them. Even if they could start their engines, they couldn't make it in space because of the hull breaches; with this in mind, VOID continued his search for a working vessel and climbed over the trash to get to the next few layers. He found a nice ship; "The Serenity." Too bad it looked like it was only in shape to last for a season at best. VOID was looking for something more long term. He continued to trek up the mountain looking closely at all of the ships as he passed. Several of them were decent, but they didn't really have the things VOID was looking for in a ship; he was nearing the peak and was starting to lose hope of ever finding one. He was beginning to think he wasted his time when he found it. It was near the top, had little damage done to it. It had a long bridge with the wings toward the back. It was stripped of it's weapons for salvage, but beneath the bridge, was plenty of space for weapons; the weapons space lead into the base of the ship below the wings that held the living quarters and storage space of the vessel. This was a real winner. VOID walked up to the ship and wiped the dust off of the hull to reveal the name: "The Devil's Bounty." It was a match made in heaven. It fit the android's every need. He opened the hatch and took a look inside and run a quick scan. The hull wasn't compromised, the engines were not currently functional, but they would work if given a bit of work. The android scanned for any anomalies in the ship and nothing came up. He walked outside and picked an empty storage capsule from his pack and tossed it at the ship. in a puff of smoke, the ship disappeared and VOID Jumped back to avoid the avalanche of ships he had just caused. He took off for Sector 10 to have the local mechanics look at the ship and see what they could do. Behind him, however, a pair of red eyes watched the android go back to the prison after ruining his work of art. When VOID was gone, the monster revealed himself and threw a fit that his art was ruined. bringing the entire mountain down and lit it up into a giant flame. He was planning his revenge on the person who did this... Even though most of it was him. The mechanic slid out from under "The Devil's Bounty" and wiped his hands with a rag like every generic mechanic is supposed to do when they look at a vehicle. He scratched his head and shrugged at VOID. "She's gonna need a lot of work, but the good news is that I have all the parts here to make it work. The bad news is that it's probably going to take me a week to get this thing in space worthy shape." "No. That's unacceptable. I'll give you three days. That's the most I can give you. I have several things that I must do and ALL of them require me to be off this planet. Have it done in three days." "Now, be reasonable, son. I've got to order the parts and in Dark Star, that takes a long time. If there was another way I could get these parts here faster, I'd gladly use that option. But unless you've got a personal carrier capable of transporting Fuel Cells and a new Drive core in less than two nights, then it's going to take a week." VOID nodded; "Very well. I'll have the parts here in two days. Give me a list." The mechanic was half stunned, half impressed; either way, he wanted to see how the android was going to get the parts there faster than any other means he was aware of; so was VOID, incidentally. The android flew back towards the mountain; maybe he could find the parts he needed back at the ship graveyard that the Saiyan prisoners and guards of Sector 10 decided to call Mount Vegeta; original name. A short lived Christening, however as VOID returned to a burning crater. The area smelled of burning metal and jet fuel. The android found some large footprints in the soot that headed in the direction of Sector 10 prison. The android, while curious why he didn't see something as large as what could leave such large footprints on his way here, also knew that the men of Sector 10 were in no condition to defend against a Dark-jin of that size. He took off at full speed toward the prison and came just in time to see the north wall collapse under the enormous foot of the Dark-jin beast that made a mess of Mount Vegeta. VOID stopped in his tracks. He had no idea how to approach such a monster. But now called for action; he flew in between the Dark-jin's feet and blasted one while sweep kicking the other one. Surprisingly, the Dark-jin gave way and fell to one knee. The android followed up by pushing off the ground under his opponent's chin and gave a large surge of electricity through his fist and sending the beast flying up into the air. When it landed outside the wall, the android motioned the other fighters to join him in a barrage of ki blasts from several directions. Several balls of light lit the darkness in the north courtyard of the prison in Sector 10; crashing into a large dome of light that expanded as more ki blasts joined the target. VOID finally raised his right hand and the crowd stopped their assault; some individuals breathing heavily. Once the smoke cleared, the Dark-jin was flat on his back and charred to a different shade. After a brief moment of silence, it began to twitch and climbed back up. VOID was the first to charge in again. This time Bringing down an axe handle powered with his ki energy exploding out into an eruption of wild ki energy; a Volcanic Smash to make them all proud. The Dark-jin roared in pain and shook the earth around everyone. VOID knew the beast was stronger than that. He flew into the smoke and crashed into the pile of Dark-jin and knocked him deeper into a crater. VOID just kept punching and kicking. After several minutes of this, he flew up and signaled the crew for another volley of ki blasts. The fighting squad followed through with the signal and blasted into the smoke cloud causing a large explosion; VOID activated his sonar to see the exact location of the Dark-jin, but he was surprised to find that the enormous giant had disappeared. He halted the assault and let the dust clear. He looked for a tunnel, but there was no sign of how the monster had manged to escape. The android was confused he looked everywhere, but the Dark-jin was no where to be found. He stomped on the ground and observed his surroundings; nothing came up in the surrounding area for up to a mile in all directions. What happened? Immediately, he heard an explosion at the south gate and the defending army charged south to see what happened. Sure enough, it was the Monster now laying siege to Sector 10 from the south. What was most disturbing about this, is that the South Gate was within a mile of the North Gate, and he couldn't find the monster. The army went in for a physical assault and laid it flat on its back with wave after wave of cannon fodder threw themselves into the large monsters chest and rolling over before the next wave flew in. The scene looked like a classic cartoon replaying the same footage to chew time and save the artists from having to draw as much. Finally VOID decided to finish the assault with a special attack of his own to send the beast off in fashion. He raised both hands together over his head and collected a large amount of energy between them. The energy began to become volatile and began to boil over and spout. The android flew straight down leading with his hands and buried them in the monster's chest and an eruption of energy followed. The other fighters stood either side, breathing heavily and waiting for the emergence of VOID. Once the smoke finally cleared, the beast had a giant hole in its chest, and VOID was seen crawling out of it. The crowd hesitated for a moment, and then a roar of applause followed. The android looked at the Dark-jin's body and noticed that it's claw was grasping something. He approached the claw cautiously; the crowd still cheering, though some of them noticed what the android was up to and moved closer to see what the monster was holding. VOID tore open the claw and saw a small black box was resting in his palm. He reached in and pulled out a box about the size of a match box. It was black and had a cartoon skull drawn on it. The Mechanic had walked up as well and his eyes widened at the android's treasure. "Amazing! A Shadow Box. I didn't know they still existed. This would be your means of getting your parts here in less than two days. Hell, less than one day with that bad boy." VOID was confused. "What the hell are you talking about? How does this help me?" "The shadow box is an old item created by ancient wizards. It allows people to travel through shadows and instantly appear miles away in the blink of an eye. You can use this to travel to the market and get your parts and then travel with them in tow back to here. I'll even change my offer with you. I'll do the repairs for no charge, all you have to do is trade me that piece once you've brought me the parts. A Shadow Box could come in handy for us soldiers of Sector 10." VOID nodded his head. "Agreed." he said as he investigated the item. Something told him he was getting robbed on this deal, but he had no use for the Shadow Box; and if it got him the repairs for his ship, he didn't care if he lost a bit of cash on the deal. Once he learned how to use it, he was quickly on the other side of Dark Star at the market and was haggling for a good prices. Once he got the parts he wanted at close to the price he wanted, he strapped the boxes to his back and traveled through the shadows to get back to Sector 10. and he dropped the boxes off with the mechanic and once he showed the receipts to him, the android was compensated for the supplies. After a day of work, The Devil's Bounty was a worthy vessel. He did the last minute inspections with the mechanic, and did a check of all of the things that he needed to do before he took her out for a spin. The mechanic did fine work; even the navigation system wasn't getting screwed up because of the magnetism of the planet. The android loaded in supplies and decided to say good bye to his friends that he had made at Sector 10. Time for one going away party before he took off for his next adventure. VOID only wished he knew where it was. [2507 words] |
