"What is this even?" the new A.I. complained. Sitting under the console and rigging the former head of the A.I directly in through cables, Dario lay on his back trying to finish his work. Strange sat at the console typing in commands. She was good with software and he was good with hardware; it didn't take long for them to figure a way to rig the A.I up. "Saiyans want to do everything on their own," Strange began. "That means from piloting to gunning, it's all manned by a Saiyan. Saiyan Armadas are rarely equipped with an A.I. If it weren't for the fact that this particular ship is mostly based on Arcosian hardware, we'd have to tear the whole place apart and set up a new rig. That takes time, and time is something we don't have." "Oh god, I feel so dirty. The more I'm integrated the more problems I see." The A.I. had been whining since they dragged it in. For a while they contemplated simply shutting the A.I. off for some peace and quiet. "If you don't like it, we can put you back in the old ship," Strange said, her patience clearly wearing thin. "At this point I'm beginning to realize you need me more than I need you. I'm not even fully synced yet and I can feel several weeks' worth of fixing up to do, unless you have the zenni for it all. You two would get shot down if you even tried to engage in a real space battle in this cow." Before they could interject, one of the panels not being used was suddenly lit up and a list began to scroll over the display. Between crossed wires, to pieces that had long expired from age, to other miscellaneous software and hardware issues, it was painfully obvious she was right. If they needed a reliable ship for the war, as they did now, it wasn't going to happen without some work. "I don't suppose you have a small fortune you've been holding out on, do you, Dario?" It didn't hurt to at least ask, Strange thought. "Er, no..." Dario frowned. "I mean, I've got a little money saved up here and there but probably not enough to cover all that. We could try going back to Yardrat, maybe, but if we have that many problems with the ship after they repaired it, I'm not actually sure if that would help us or hurt us." "It's an idea but Armada parts don't come easily. I doubt they would even have the necessary parts we need. What we need is money and fast." "You two should consider yourselves lucky. You didn't just get a ship A.I., you got a North Alliance Cruiser A.I. The North has had their eye on many underground transactions being made, keeping tabs on them but never jumping in and dealing with the mob or the pirates. Not since war has been on the horizon." "What? You want us to steal money?" "From pirates. Every two weeks on New Vegeta, a transaction is made between pirates that has them relocate their loot from place to place. We'll have to wait over two weeks because the next transaction is in only two days from now but the treasures being transported would be more than enough to get me to where I need to be." "So we'll just take your ship then?" "Yeah." "Wait. What do you mean, 'your ship?' I thought you were the captain of this old thing." The A.I. looked up at Strange, the camera mount tilting to one side as if confused. "Yeah, about that." Strange pointed to Dario. "He's Captain Vess, not me. This is his ship. I have my own, but..." "Why didn't you use your ship then? Surely it would have been a better option than this hunk of junk I'm currently resigned to." "Her ship is... well, it's not really made for shooting holes in things. It's more for travel," Dario explained sheepishly. "And... I don't really know if you'd fit in with her ship's system. She might not like you." "Who?" "Her mom." "What does her mother have to do with my compatibility with her ship?" "Mom is my ship." "That's physically impossible. Ships can't--" "She's also a tree." "You're a tree?" "No, Mom is a tree." "But you just said she was your ship." "She is." "You two are just trying to fry my circuits now, aren't you?" "It's... it's complicated. But we can make the jump to New Vegeta just as soon as we can switch ships." Dario thought for a moment before adding, "We should probably make sure the Namekian representatives made it safely to their meeting on the Jewel as well. We did agree to help with that." Almost on cue, a grand ship with similar designs to those commonly found on Namek came floating into view. The ship's size was monstrous to a point where the Tuffles wondered if they would have had any trouble with the enemy ship in question. As it entered the atmosphere, it steadily became smaller and smaller till they couldn't see it anymore. "Well then... Guess that takes care of that." --- After figuring out where exactly they needed to be, along with more complaints from the A.I. about getting tricked into being part of the Saiyan Armada instead of Strange's ship, the Tuffles made their way to New Vegeta. A look at Mom's display screens showed two different biomes in stark contrast to one another. On one side there were mountains; on the other, the glitter of a vast sea. Strange's eyes lit up like a twelve-year-old staring at a bowl of candy. "The sea!" She excitedly squealed, a bit higher pitched then she intended. "I love oceans! So much water, hardly seems possible." "Heh, yeah. I've kinda missed the ocean since leaving Earth. We've been in deserts and forests but I just realized it's been a while since I've seen any major bodies of water." Dario peered at the screen, trying to see into the water. "No telling what might be swimming around in there though, considering what planet we're on." "That's alright, I can't go in it anyways. Can't swim." "Oh," Dario frowned. "No water near where you lived?" "Lived in the Alpha Collective most my life. Just lived in a hollowed out meteor from a long since dead world. Only the rich saw more than a bucket's worth of water at any given time." "That's... I'm sorry. I mean, I wouldn't say my parents were well off, but things are definitely different on Earth. If we wanted to see water we could just drive out to the beach, or a lake, or a public pool..." Dario's face reddened. "I-I mean, not that I'm bragging about it. It's just weird to think about planets who don't have that kind of access to water." "Oi, it's fine. After traveling I know it's different everywhere you go. You'll learn the cultures and see why it's good to help people out if you stick around long enough. Actually, I'd say you've learned quite a bit already. Now come on, we have to rob some pirates." "Right. Where did the A.I. say we had to go?" Dario waited at the door until Strange walked past him into Mom's garden. The plant life seemed similar to Earth's in a lot of ways, which surprised Dario until he remembered that New Vegeta was colonized by Saiyans from his home planet. The familiarity of it put a smile on the boy's face as they exited the ship. Once outside they could see the town they were pretty close to was the town they were looking for. Its buildings did not hold the elegance of what a structured government would provide and rather looked like it was put together by bits and pieces of debris from ships. The town was surprisingly crowded, something they didn't really want to deal with in this case. With fights breaking out and mass drinking going on, it really held to the stereotypes one hears about these kinds of people. Close to the two Tuffles was a dirt road leading straight into town and from the opposite side, they could see two pirates walking toward it, arguing about who got the better score. They didn't look like much, being around the same height as the two of them. One of them was staggering as he walked, showing signs that he was intoxicated while the other's face also ran red with rum. "Hey girlie!" The drunker of the two pirates called out, blearily looking at the two Tuffles. "You look lost! How about shacking up with us for the night for some fun? You can bring the boy. I don't des... dess.... Pete, what's the word?" "Discriminate," his companion said blankly. "Yeah, thassit! What he said!" "Uhhh..." Neither of them really knew how to respond to the pirate other then the obvious rejections but before they could say a thing, the pirate that appeared to be in more control of his alcohol suddenly fell over on the ground, leaving the other cackling like a idiot. "That means I wiiiiiiinugh-" Suddenly he too fell over, sprawled comfortably on the ground in the middle of the path. Dario and Strange looked at each other with eyebrows raised, both getting the same idea. They grabbed the pirates and dragged them off the road behind a rocky outcropping. It took a bit of effort getting past the buckles but in a few minutes' time they stripped the pirates of their clothes. They knew they would stick out like sore thumbs if they walked into the town dressed as they were. Dario slid his new layer of clothes over his own and proceeded to pat himself down. He then looked over at Strange and grew red seeing her unbuttoning her suit. She spotted Dario's wandering eyes and rolled her eyes. "I have an undershirt under this, you dork. I learned from last time." She slid her top off revealing a gray tank as she proceeded to put the rest of the gear on. "It's hot out here. I don't know how you can stand wearing two layers," she added to further justify herself. Once dressed, she made a quick trip back into the ship to drop her suit off. "Some people wear shorts in winter. I can wear hoodies and pants in summer." Dario shrugged, picking up the conversation where Strange had left it before stowing her suit. "It isn't that hot out here anyway, there's a breeze from the water." "Alright, whatever works. So wow, first off we never caught the A.I's name. Second, she said that there's a shipment of gold coming through this town today. While no other pirate would even dare to try anything for fear or ruining their reputation and blah blah blah, we're not pirates. What we're about to do is insanely dumb. She said the gold typically comes through in a carriage. We just have to hijack it, ride it through a town of people who will kill us, avoid dead ends, and made it back here to put into mom. Sounds easy enough, right?" "Are you serious?" Dario stared at her. "Dario, we need this for your ship if we're gonna be of any use in the war. As we are now, if we were in a real fight, we'd be completely and utterly crushed. I'd only consider something like this because we're taking it from thieves and murderers." "Yeah, okay, I get that, but how are we gonna get it back here without getting killed?" "Haven't the foggiest. Making it up as we go as usual I suppose. It's odd this doesn't even seem as dangerous as the things we've been doing this past couple of weeks, huh?" "Considering that demon guy could've probably killed us? I guess you're right. Let's go." --- "Can't we go any faster?! I think he's gaining on us!" Dario watched from his position at the back of the primitive covered wagon as an all-too-familiar streak of blue gradually came closer, seemingly unaffected by the plumes of dust that the raptors pulling the hover-carriage kicked up as they ran. For whatever reason, it hadn't occurred to Dario and Strange that Turin and his gang might have been hanging around in the Pirate's Cove. This had proven to be a massive oversight, since Enkel had spotted the duo as he came strolling out of a shifty-looking tattoo parlor and notified his captain accordingly. His detour to make his report allowed the Tuffles to sneak away and continue as planned, but the Saiyan captain knew right away that the runt who'd stolen his old ship was the cause of the commotion that had erupted later on. Enkel, ever the diligent crewman, had assured Turin that this time he'd chase down his target. He then proceeded to tear off his armor, showing off the new lightning bolts inked onto his waistline. "With these, I'm even faster than before!" he declared, and took off running. Turin was left to mutter something about how his crew was always squandering their pay. Back in the present, Strange struggled to keep the startled dinosaurs from veering off course. They were almost home free. Seeing the massive redwood, Mom's chosen form on New Vegeta, on the outskirts of the Cove, Strange yanked on the reins, forcing the giant lizards to U-turn. At the right moment, she used her ki blade to slice through the thick ropes keeping the floating carriage attached to the raptors and jumped aside. Along with a panicked Dario, the haul of treasure continued to glide midair in a straight line towards the ship after being cut. Strange rolled away and lifted her head in time to see Enkel skid to a stop, faced with two confused and rampaging dinosaurs suddenly headed in his direction. The Tuffle girl scrambled to her feet and pulled Dario up. "Come on, help me pull this inside!" The two grabbed the chariot and pulled hard, a seemingly unnecessary effort, for it drifted towards them with ease. Nearly stumbling over themselves they managed to get it halfway into the ship until suddenly the floating treasure hoard stopped moving. On the other side was an infuriated Enkel, pulling with all his might to stop them. "I don't know what's going on, or what this tree thing is, but I'm gonna stop both of you and make you pay for what happened on Yardrat!" The tug-of-war match went on for few moments. With both Dario and Strange giving it their all, there were some moments they thought they'd nearly pulled the whole thing in. "I have an idea," Strange said as the two struggled. "Hold it for just a second!" she said as she let go, sliding under the chariot. More than ever, Dario struggled to keep it in place, but he slowly began losing ground. "S-Strange! What are you doing?!" "When I get my hands on you two... Ohh, the captain is going to have some words with you, squirt. You're going to wish you were dead by the time we--" Enkel suddenly let go of the chariot, sending it flying into the ship and laying Dario out on his back. The Taifuu-jin looked down to see a fist pull away from his groin. He fell over on the ground with a tear rolling from his eyes in silent agony, his hands over his sensitive parts. "Yooou.... biiiiiiitch." For a second time, the Tuffle girl had made a fool of him. The tree sealed itself as Strange hurried inside and in moments, they were gone. |
