The Destroyer

It didn't take long for Sharyu to find passage across the ocean. Once the Captain of the Prize Catch realized that the Shikirian knew the difference between fore and aft he was happy to have another hand on deck. He was given the job of lookout, and spent most days perched high atop the tallest mast of the ship, over thirty feet in the air. The Price Catch was a transport vessel working for a wealthy merchant that went by the name Bartlebee, and the captain warned Sharyu to watch for the presence of any incoming ship. The pirates of New Vegeta were fond of flying false colors in order to close the distance on their prey. Much to the relief of the captain no ships were sighted for several days. Over that time, Sharyu spent his off hours getting to know the rest of the crew. The chef, Dartan, was a Durian that used to work for royalty...until they caught him with his bosses wife, he was then promptly exiled to this “back water planet” until the end of days. The Quartermaster went by the name Otherion, he was here to patch up the hull and sails if they are ever damaged, and to keep track of the crew's supplies. Currently they were running on schedule, no shortages to report. The Captain, who refused to be called anything but Captain, remained enigmatic. The crew of 80 seamen came from every corner of the universe. For some, this is the only life they ever knew, the only life their father's ever knew, and for others, they simply have no other choice. The journey across the sea was rather easy going for several days. The waters were come, the wind was strong, pushing them in the rite direction, and no one had attacked the ship yet. Sharyu was thinking that this would be easy, until he heard the first thunder blast clap against the ocean. Suddenly the sky was filled with clouds and rain poured down on the crew like a waterfall. The Captain began to scream, “Hard to port! We need to get-” but it was already too late. A tidal wave that dwarfed the ship came crashing down, splitting the ship in two and sending most of the crew flailing in to the water. The sun shone down, illuminating a large field of tall, green grass. Sharyu woke with a gasp of fresh air, bolting up rite among the tall grass, his head barely rising high enough to see across the field. ...Wasn't I... he thought, recalling a ship in the rolling sea, falling in the water...drowning. Then the recognition of where he was hit him. ...That's not possible. I haven't been on Shiki'r in... Suddenly his thoughts were interrupted by the cry of a young child, “Father!” Sharyu's head quickly swung to the side, following the sound. It can't be... “Father! Where are you!?” the child, his child, sounded afraid. “I'm over here, Lang,” Sharyu called out, standing up. A young Shikirian boy ran through the field in the direction of his father, “I thought I lost you!” Sharyu laughed and picked up his son, “You're so young...” “Nuh-uh! I'm turning eleven tomorrow!” That's when Sharyu remembered. This was the last time he saw his son, saw his planet. Then this must be... Sharyu's eyes flew open as he expelled salt water from his lungs. He continued to hack and drwa in breath hungrily as he floated in the sea on a piece of driftwood, the mast of the Price Catch. Sharyu raised his head and looked around. Dozens of bodies floated in the water, which was tinged red in several large places. Sharyu put his head back down on the mast and began to close his eyes, wishing to return to his dream, when a shark snatched a body and dragged it under. That woke him up. His aura exploded around him, boiling the ocean water as he rose into the sky. He scanned the horizon until he saw land and quickly jetted towards it. Coming into a hard landing, he bent over, hands on his knees, panting, trying to catch his breath. Suddenly, a voice called out to him, “You're alive?” Sharyu turned towards the noise, revealing a haggard Otherian standing in the mouth of a cave. “Well, come on then! Dartan's cooking us up some food. You're welcome to dig in. There's only the three of us left after all.” |
