January 2014; THE NEXT CHAPTER BEGINS...

The classroom was buzzing with students all returning from their winter break. There was some exciting news that had been passed around via email during the break: on the 27th of December, one of the teachers had made a full recovery from an accident last October. As everyone settled in, the noise did not; the students were positively buzzing with gossip and glee. Other students expressed discontent at the fact that the break was already over. Nevertheless, everybody quieted down when the door opened.

Classroom 7-B had a homeroom teacher that was virtually never around. Someone who had retained his job because of how much the students loved him and how well he could lead a class through a lecture about magic, and somehow teach them Algebra and Classic Literature, as well as History and Politics through it. Usually, however, the students had a substitute: today had to be different though, their teacher had recovered over the break. He was all better, he had to be...

The hopes of the students rose high when the figure began to enter, and promptly took a dive. In walked a woman, with a stern look on her face and a small yet somehow oppressing stature. It was the substitute again, Ms. Ariyami.

"Everybody had better be seated by the count of three, or else I will gladly keep you all after school." She commanded, her voice cold and commanding. She stood behind the podium, looking over the classroom. It would have been hysterical to see a teacher so small standing behind a structure like that, were it not this woman, who would sooner give you a week's detention than look at you. "As you all know. Dr. Yamada has recently made a full recovery from his accident last Fall."

The class all nodded. Last October, Dr. Yamada was hospitalized after crashing his car into a pole. It was a miracle that he had even survived; had the medical team not worked as fast as it did, he would have perished within the hour. That left the hanging question: if Dr. Yamada had made his full recovery, why was Ms. Ariyami here?

"I have been asked here today to..."

"Make an entrance for me." The voice came from behind the class. As everyone turned to face the direction it came from, Ms. Ariyami shook her head. The source of the voice was a man in his forties, though he looked no older than thirty if one were to take a guess. He had long blue-grey hair that was pulled back into a ponytail, and wore spectacles over eyes that very clearly held secrets behind them. If the eyes were the windows to the soul, then he had his drapes up.

He stood at an average height and wore a brown tweed jacket, standard wear for a college professor. The man always had a flair for the eccentric, being a trained magician and having inherited a huge amount of money from his parents' deaths. He taught at a high school when he had the skills to teach at a University and the money to retire; as well, even though his wife and child died of West Nile Virus, he stayed cheerful and happy.

"Doctor Yamada, may I ask you to not excite the students." The woman behind the podium called out, with a careful emphasis on his title, as if in an attempt to remind him of his position. Dr. Yamada merely smiled and nodded.

"Of course, my apologies. They're all back from their breaks, as am I." He walked through the rows of desks to assume his place behind the podium. Ms. Ariyami huffed and left the classroom, and Dr. Yamada turned to the class. "Welcome back for your 2014 semester. As I am the homeroom teacher, let me be the first to say: I think this will be quite the eventful year for all of us. I would like to begin the year by introducing a sort of life lesson I learned from my...car crash."

He paused for a moment, composing himself. "You are all young and full of life. So much potential, so many possible roads for you all to take. But there is one destination we're all headed to eventually, and it may seem a bit morbid. The motto I've taken a liking to is 'Memento Mori'...or rather, remember that you are going to die. It is an inevitability, and one we all have some fear of; many men and women through history have sought immortality, but I am here to say to not look upon death as an end, or an ill omen." He smiled. "Death is an event; it's a painful one when it happens to someone we love, and it's a meaningless one when it happens to someone we've never met. It's a horrifying one when it comes to happening to us, but if it is to happen, we shouldn't fear it. Death is merely a journey to the next life."

He opened a book and moved his finger along a line of text. "The Hindus believed in something called 'Reincarnation', or being reborn after death. What you reincarnate into is based on your karma; this is what justified the caste system, in their eyes. We'll go over their culture a bit later in the year, but I just wanted to look at their ideas of life after death. In the Christian Mythology and indeed, other religions as well, the idea of life after death is the afterlife. A moment where we are judged on our actions, and sent to Heaven or Hell." He turned the page; perhaps he prepared the lecture beforehand. "It is intriguing to know that the Hindus, on the other hand, believe in Reincarnation. You see, you can never leave this world until your soul is completely purified; in a sense, the ultimate goal for Hindus is to get to the afterlife, and break free of the cycle of Reincarnation."

He opened his mouth to continue, but the bell rang. He sighed and closed the book. "No homework tonight, but expect some tomorrow!" He called out. The students were already up and out...

And this is where you, the student, begin your part of the tale. Your actions and choices will affect everyone around you, including yourself; especially yourself. So the question now remains: What will you do?

Mai Naomi let out a soft sigh as she heard the school bell ring, indicating the end of the school day. It was certainly not the end of her day though, with the extracurricular activities that she involved herself in at the high school. While there were days that she did indulge herself in a bit of rest, today was not one of those days. Tucking her glasses away in the carrying case, which she then put back into her purse, instead of all the other students that were rushing out of the classroom to do whatever it was they needed, she took her time. She knew she wouldn't leave for a while still.

Looking over at the returned professor, she smiled a little. She had not been a fan of the substitute teacher that they all had to suffer through, though she really liked Dr. Yamada. He had been gone ever since the previous fall of 2013, and while she rarely had time to try to even find out which hospital he was in, she had missed the professor. It was a huge relief to see that he had fully recovered.

"Welcome back, Doctor Yamada." she greeted politely, with that little smile. With a little hesitation on her part, she grabbed her bag and turned to leave the classroom. She couldn't dally for long, not with the meetings after school and the projects she had to work with other students after hours. Her first priority was catching up with the student council in their own designated room. It took a few moments for her to even try to remember just which room that was in, due to the length of the winter break. Even she had a lot of free time on her hands, though she spent much of it studying instead of relaxing, wanting to keep her mind sharp for when school resumed.

Chance smiled at hearing the bell ring thus signaling the end of class. Swinging his backpack over his shoulder and whistling a merry tune, the young student was the first out the classroom door and making a hasty exit.

He was happy to see that the professor was back now. Ms. Ariyami had given him so many detentions lately that he was beginning to think his luck was beginning to wear off. Upon thinking of that he reached into his pocket and pulled out a bright red die with white dots. He flicked it up into the air once before snatching it up.

Not only was luck now on his side, but the teach was actually going to be doing a lesson on something interesting. Things were really starting to look up.
“This calls for a celebration!” He said before dashing down the stairwell before changing his mind midway through, and slid on the rail instead. Without skipping a beat he started taking off running again once he hit ground level. Making a quick hook left he arrived at his destination.

There was a twinkle in Chance’s eyes as he rubbed his hands together and opened up the double doors that lay before him. A chorus of voices immediately engulfed him in a cacophony, drawing his senses into the boisterous atmosphere beyond the door’s threshold.
“Alright boys, Chance is back in town!” he announced before surveying the room and locating the gamblers table. The Gaming Club that met after school was what he called his sanctuary.

The doors for the student council opened up before the young Ms. Naoko. The school, being rather large in its very nature, had many classrooms of varying sizes. Since the student council was composed of four students from each grade--12 students in total--the classroom that they were given to gather in was not the largest that the school had to offer. That was not to say that the room was small; it was one of the middle sized classrooms on the campus, and had many posters and decorations of awards for the school and pictures of previous student council.

Marilyn Sato was the Junior President, and was always one of Mai's greatest rivals when it came to political affairs. This made it quite difficult for Mai to get any of her ideas passed, however it was always obvious that despite their constant bickering, there was a fierce friendship between the two. It often took Kirito Schultz, the Student Body President, to deliberate between them often, however.

As Mai entered, she would notice all the people looking around. It was obvious that they had all just returned from their break; even Sato seemed a bit tired. Nevertheless, the school had begun again, as had the events that needed planning. Such as...

"We need to hold a school festival," Schultz announced as Mai took her seat. "It only makes sense for us to have some sort of celebration since everyone is back in school." The room seemed to nod in agreement at the notion; perhaps that meant that Mai could interject with any ideas that she may have had for some sort of celebration...

Meanwhile, the Gaming Club had a note posted to the middle of the table. Upon it read something that would ruin Chance's day, just as it had ruined everyone else's who enjoyed the club:

"As of 2014, the Gaming Club is forbidden from any gambling; any evidence of goods or actions being transacted through these games will result in the immediate dissolution of the club. Thank you.
--Student Council, 2014"

"Damn, that just kills the whole thing." Said Ichigo, who now stood beside Chance. "What's gaming without the excitement of knowing that if you lose, you lose something?"

"Who ratted us out to the Student Council?" Asked Aaron from across the table, resting his chin on his hand as he drummed his fingers, the wooden thumping sounding throughout the following silence.

"Chance, let's go to the Council room. See what we can do about this." Ichigo said as he grabbed the paper. "Come on!"

Mai hadn't said much besides quiet greetings and given warm smiles and professional nods as she made her way to her personal chair among the council. Everyone from all the grades was present, on the first day! That was the best case scenario for them to start planning school events for the winter and spring. They needed to get down to business as soon as they could, and delays were things that were an annoyance at best in terms of progress.

They already had taken care of the Gaming Club from what she was aware. They had been informed about the gambling that was secretly taking place, which was certainly illegal to take place in a high school, and something that none of them wanted to tolerate. She was already prepared to hear about the complaints about the accusations in the after school hours.

"I agree. We need to have some kind of festival..." Mai said as she rested professionally in her seat, a confident smile quickly spreading across her face as an idea for what kind of celebrating forming in her head. To her, it was but common sense to have the one she quickly thought of. Many students had Doctor Yamada's class at least once throughout their terms in the high school, and the good doctor had just returned after the break with everyone else.

"I suggest that we have a magic festival. The sort of magic that Doctor Yamada teaches in his class. Tarot card readings, fortune readers, that sort of thing." Mai was quick to interject. Of course, with the longstanding rivalry between her and her close friend Sato, she expected some kind of counter-interjection. She was prepared for one, as she always was. It wasn't out of spite, their debating, but rather a sort of... game, between the two of them.

Placing his lucky die into his pocket, Chance headed over to his usual seat at the gambling table. The usual gamblers were already there but surprisingly they didn't seem to be playing a game. He could already hear the sound of their coins clinking in his pocket.
They were friends, but this evening they would also be victims.
Chance's eyes were then drawn to a piece of paper that both of them were gawking at. "Eh? What's this?" He asked before snatching it up. He read it over as both Ichigo and Aaron made their outbursts.
"Hmph." He scoffed before crumpling up the paper and tossing it over his shoulder. He breathed a heavy sigh. "Just my luck."

It was obvious that there was a spy within their little group or at least a snoop that was poking their nose where it didn't belong, but regardless Ichigo was right--something had to be done.
"Ichigo, Ichigo, Ichigo..." Chance began to say while placing a hand upon his shoulder. "I admire your enthusiasm, but don't lose your cool. It's not so much the cards you're dealt, but how you play the hand. This letter is nothing more than a Joker, they want us to reveal our Ace. If we go in their gun's bla--erm--hotheaded, well then that'll be all the confirmation they'll need."

Chance then reached behind Ichigo's ear and seemed to pull out a card out of thin air.
"They've played their card, and now we'll play ours. Come on...it's time to see the Old Maid." Chance said before stuffing his hands into his pocket and exiting the room with both Ichigo and Aaron trailing behind.

It didn't take too long until they arrived at the Student Council's office's door, at which point Chance knocked on the door.
"Remember, keep it cool. Absolute poker faces."

Sato had stood up to reply to the idea for the school festival; while it was a nice idea that they would have a celebration in honor of Dr. Yamada, the fact remained that he would probably be absent for it. Not only that, but it wasn't fair to the other staff to have it all be dedicated to a teacher that was hardly, if ever at all, attending his own job. Before she could speak aloud, however, a knock on the door sounded through the room. Soon the leaders of the Gaming Club and Student Council were face to face as the doors were opened.

"This is highly irregular," said the Junior President, folding her arms. "What is the meaning of this visit?"

While she had fully expected Sato's counter-argument, Mai was already rapidly thinking through her argument for why her idea should've been passed. While it was true that Yamado was absent for a rather lengthy period of time, that was largely due to his hospitalization. The doctor was also a valued staff member at the school when he was active on the campus, and much preferred as a teacher by the students than who served as the substitute teacher. Therefore, in her eyes, a welcoming festival in his honor was something she saw as the best course of action.

What she didn't expect was the interruption by the Gaming Club so quickly. Though she supposed it was only natural. That was their secret thing, gambling, and now they were no longer allowed to do it at all. "They must have seen the note about their illegal gambling activities." Mai said with a disappointed frown, resting her arms in her lap. She hadn't even got up yet, looking over at the Gaming Club leaders that had just walked in.

"Oh, the gambling thing..." Sato responded and rubbed her temples as she sat back in her chair, trying to process everything that was going on at the moment. "Well, we're not dealing with any issues regarding club forming or management, Maximilien. Right now we're planning a festival, and you're interrupting."

The rest of the Council remained silent, turning to continue focusing on more pressing matters while the Junior Staff focused on the unwelcome intrusion from the gambling club. "Besides, you know gambling is illegal; if you were caught by someone who wasn't us, the whole school could have gotten in trouble, and you know it."

"Excusez-moi mademoiselle." Chance began to say before peeking behind the girl and noticing several other people present in the room behind her, "We didn't know you had a meeting, but we were given a notice about gambling. And quite frankly were quite upset that you would even think such a thing was being done. May I inquire as to why were being targeted so unfairly without even an explanation as to why this notion was passed to begin with? It's almost like you think we allowed gambling to begin with." Chance asked in a rather composed manner, as if he were talking to a politician rather than a council president. However, inside his pocket, Chance's hand was rolling the die around erratically. Fiddling with it like a nervous child.

The Junior Vice-President sighed, looking over at Chance standing with the other Gaming Club leaders. She didn't like the interruption, clearly, no more than Sato did. They weren't able to contribute to the plans for a school festival, while the other grades were discussing it among themselves, limiting their input on the matter. "It's simple, LeChance. Just like how the police needs evidence before they can act legally, we found evidence about the gambling activities going on in your club. Enough to convince the board as a whole that you are no longer allowed to do it. Such activities endanger this entire school and the student as a mass, which is what all of us in here are looking out for."

"Evidence?" Chance said cocking a brow "And why weren't we informed of this? It seems quite unprofessional to resort to such tactics, such as this note, behind our back when it's our club you're meddlin' with--"
Chance cleared his throat for a moment.
"Ahem sorry." Chance said before resuming once more, "I understand the severity of this...gambling thing, but in the future it would be nice to have control over what should and should not be done about it within our club. At least having a meeting with us first would have been nice. Don't you agree?" Chance said, trying his best to restrain himself from saying what he truly wanted to say.

"It also seems rather unprofessional to conduct illegal activities in a high school." Mai was quick to retort, her voice calm and yet ever so slightly condescending. A mere reflex on her part. "The Gaming Club was formed, if I recall correctly, around the conventional gaming. Even video games we convinced the staff here to allow. We did not, however, condone gambling activities. If we did not act on our part, the police would have found out about your activities sooner or later. A consequence that would've, again, harmed the entire school because of your single club."

Chance shook his head, "Again with the accusations? Yet so far all I've heard is speculation, and nothing solid that you can present to me that gambling is in fact going on. You're so quick to attack and assume. May I speak with the President? I'm afraid I can't really talk this over civilly with you if you're just going to insult me the entire time." Chance replied.

Schultz had sighed as he stood up, away from the council. He had anticipated the reaction of the Gaming Club, but would have greatly preferred it if Chance and his friends had waited a while to voice their complaints. That said, Naoko and Sato were not helping things out very much in the way that they were handling him. He stood between the groups, shaking his head. "Chance, I know what you're trying to do, and you'd make quite the lawyer when growing up. As for proof, you may have forgotten that there is a camera overlooking your table; when the board notified us of its sabotage, we fixed it while you were away." He sighed.

"You're fortunate you haven't been expelled, and that is by the Board deciding to let you remain. We cannot stop you from meeting off campus and conducting your illegal activities there, but if you are to remain here there shall be no illegal activities. Are we clear?"

Chance grimaced and tore his eyes from looking at Schultz once he mentioned the camera. Of course he knew about it. It was one of the first things they addressed before playing a game. But to think the Board would be able to find out about it without him knowing...
"...We're clear." Chance said reluctantly. It was obvious he still had a few words he could say to argue against Schultz, but for reasons that were his own Chance conceded. "If there's nothing further to discuss. We shall be going now s’il vous plaît" Chance said before turning to Aaron and Ichigo and motioning for there departure.

"...Now that the interruption has been settled..." Mai said with a sigh, closing her eyes for a few moments to rub her temples, she slowly let her arms fall back into her lap. Looking over at her greatest rival and friend in the whole room, she gave a teasing smirk. "Now where were we? I believe I was pushing for the school festival to be magic-themed. It would also be a little welcome-back to the doctor."

Slightly leaning forward in her chair, Mai glanced over at the other members of the council, only to look back for Sato's reaction. "Did you have an objection to my idea, or... are you gonna support it?"

The rest of the day went on without much event; the Gaming Club's intervention had given much cause for headache to the Council, and they soon agreed on a festival to celebrate the whole staff, with a slight bias to the teacher that everybody loved so much. The day came and went all too quickly, and soon everyone was tucked safely away in their dorms.

Two men remained yet on the campus. In the dean's office stood the dean himself; a tall, lean man who had stubble from days of sleepless work. Dirty spectacles rested upon the edge of his nose, though they remained unscratched and unscrubbed; it was clear that he took care of them, he just hadn't had the time to focus on them for a while it seemed.

Behind him stood Doctor Yamada, who looked on through the window. "So you no longer have it..." the Dean, Dr. Yuri Takashi, mumbled at last, with a heavy sigh. "I suppose I should have expected an outcome like that...after what happened last October." He turned to face the doctor, who could only solemnly nod at the statement.

"Is there some other reason you called me here, then? Other than to berate me for being injured?" the doctor responded, folding his arms. The moon reflected off of his glasses, but his eyes seemed to pierce through the light with an unknown strength. Takashi shook his head, having been temporarily been distracted by that.

"Not to berate you, no. It's not often that someone can live without what they've lost at the hour to come." Dr. Takashi walked over to his desk and took a seat, folding his hands together. "I am just wondering exactly how it is you're feeling."

"There are no words that can describe it, unfortunately." Yamada responded, holding his hand to his chest. His eyes scanned along the room, and he heaved a sigh. "However, I am still aware during that hour, and I am still capable of self defense. You have my word." Takashi nodded with a smile at Yamada's words.

"Of course. Just remember, Yamada, you have friends here. This isn't merely a job." Takashi nodded and gestured to a seat. "Come, let us speak of matters unrelated to that dreadful time. How was being back in class today?"

"It was...quite enjoyable. I noticed that several students were missing today, that was quite odd." Yamada responded.

"Ah, yes. Hopefully they'll see fit to return to school soon."

"Hopefully."

Atop his bunkbed, with his hands folded behind his back, lay Chance. His emerald eyes were half open as he lazily looked up at the ceiling while casually tossing his precious red die up in the air again, and again, and again.
"Just my luck." he said with a sigh. Ever since his little meeting with the Student Council, Chance couldn't help but dwell over what was said...and what could be done. "Tch. Bien joué Schultz, but I still have a hand to play. You won't be gettin' rid of me that easy."
Just then Chance's cellphone rang.
The young gambler cocked an eyebrow and picked up the device that was laying by his side. The dimly glowing screen read: New Message. However, the number was not one he recognized. Curious as to what was being sent, Chance opened it.

Chance's eyes widened instantly. He quickly jumped out of his bed and put on his shoes faster than his roommate had ever seen.
"Hey! Where are you going? It's past curfew! If you get caught they might actually expel you this time." He said.
Chance merely glanced over at him and smiled softly "Heh, ya worry too much. Besides, I've got a date with fate." He replied before heading out the door.

Being on the school student council, Mai was of course aware that there were missing students that had failed to show up after the break. This was a cause for concern, and it had been one of the many thoughts at the forefront of her mind as she stayed on campus for several hours. She had her small victory with the decision of the festival; while it was not entirely focused on magic and celebrating Yamada's return, they had all agreed that at least part of the overall festival should have it. It was because of the festival preparations with the staff, that she was mostly staying behind on campus for. As Junior Vice-President, she saw it her task to inform all the teachers she could of the festival, as well as leave behind information in the faculty office for those teachers that she missed.

Once she was done, she finally retired to her dorm room, collapsing on top of her bed with a quiet huff. She stayed that way for several minutes, closing her eyes and resting in an attempt to relax from her day. Slowly, after that amount of time, she sat back up on her bed and sighed, before glancing at her desk. She was tired from all the meetings and classes in her day, and she was tempted even still to study, but her eyes slowly went from the paperwork there to her television. Biting her lip, she was torn between the two not long enough before she grabbed her remote and turned on the device, starting to flip through the channels for something to watch.
