I posted in the general discussion, but wanted to post here as well. I am looking for experienced hunters to take me out and show me the ropes. I have never hunted before, but have always wanted to. Hard for me to get out there though since I dont have any friends or family that share my interest. Let me know if you can help me out! |

Welcome aboard! Not too far from you, about an hour west. I don't have a big place to hunt (take that as a really SMALL place) and the public hunting just doesn't exist here. Hang in there. I'm sure there are plenty of folks near you that will help out. Start hanging out in sporting goods places, posting on forums like this, and things should start looking up. Lots of goose hunting where you are. Might be a good place to start. If you have a bow go to archery shops and look for 3D shoots. Fun way to practice and hone your skills for hunting. Plus, you'll meet folks there who hunt. Ya' never know! Good luck. |

TLC Thank you...that would be awesome! Dave...I have 9 rifles/shotguns. I haven't shot them all yet, they were hand me downs through a fam member. They are mostly older but in really good condition. A couple Marlins, one browning, and Winchesters. My bow is a PSE, but I really hate it. Im looking to buy a Bear within the next month and get practicing on that. I don't wanna waste anymore time practicing with the one I have since I don't like it. And yes of course I love to fish. Im no pro obviously, but could spend all day on the water. I just love all this outdoorsy stuff and it sucks because no one that I hang around with shares my interests so its hard for me to get out there

no such thing as wasting time shooting a bow. even if you don't like it. even one you don't like trains your muscles. look at as many bows as you can get your hands on. hoyt is the brand I like. but, the new elites are nice shooting bows, also. |

I plan on lookin around a little more, but I really liked the Bear Finesse. Its made for women and just felt more comfortable to shoot compared to others I have tried. |

Check out the Elite Spirit. Made for women and you won't find a sweeter shooting bow than Elite. Bear doesn't have the quality and Hoyt is way over priced. Blue Ridge Outdoors can hook you up. They're about a hour south of you. |

Are you able to get to the starved Rock area ? Karen and I have a time share and would be happy to have you with for our early bow season hunt in that area . My son and his GF would also be there . We hunt http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/hunter_fact_sheet/R2hfs/hdl_deer.htm http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/hunter_fact_sheet/R2Maps/hdl_deer.pdf http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/hunter_fact_sheet/R2Maps/MorrisWetlandsMap.pdf and http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/hunter_fact_sheet/R1hfs/str_mtt_deer.htm http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/hunter_fact_sheet/R1Maps/mtt_deerturkey.pdf http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/hunter_fact_sheet/R1Maps/str_deerturkey.pdf http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/hunter_fact_sheet/R1Maps/str_NP.pdf This last map is an area that Karen and I hunted a lot one year so know pretty well , same with the wetlands . We hunt in Oct. so it is doe only at Starved Rock area , not sure if it is the same at wetlands or not . Added bonus is Heinekey lake if we want to do some fishing . |

No not at this time , a little far away time wise . plus depending on peoples ' shit going on at the time ' we can do 3 day or week long . Now normally I keep the weeks for late doe season { gun } but there are no deer there then anymore in any number that I would burn week for . So thinking of a 3 day and week long bow hunt in Oct. but not the dates . Just so you know , very rough living conditions at the resort . In door pool , 5 hole , iron , golf course , mini golf .... we have fun . Why don't you find out what would be good for you and I will see if we can work with your schedule . Also curious , do you bird hunt ? We do dove hunts and peasants Pheasants . Friend Capt Jim has a brace of short hairs that are just fun to watch making the birds an extra . Doves , we have a place that after opening day it is just $50.00 a day to hunt , whole day . Opening day is $150.00 for a half day . So post a little reply and when I get alittle more time I will PM my address and PH # My e-mail is captainbill9@gmail.com

I am not shooting a deer for her , that she has to do by herself . Just showing her where . When we get enough people at a hunt we can do still hunts . Why still hunts ? Cuss driving is a no no on state land . See at least I SEE stuff to shoot at . Ifin I recall you all didn't see anything

If I recall correctly, you saw more of a bottle bottom and that funny chit you were smoking. Last you said was your "honey Hole" was in southern Illinois. Guess you couldn't pick up enough cans to buy gas to make the trip. |

Cairo is my honey hole , but it got hit hard with blue tongue 2 or 3 years ago and with everyone being poorer than dirt , what is left of the herd is hunted all year . Thing is they are also lazy and the deer will just learn and get smart again , was easy for a while , and not stand by roads , locals won't go into the woods , lots of nasty stuff in there . The herd will be back but not for a while . We made the trip but hunt late season doe at the IL. river areas . We have had it easy for the last 15 years , lots of deer . Pop. is low now in certain areas , this was the plan forced on the IDNR by the insurance companies by way of Springfield . Plus the public lands have been so hunted that the deer know and stay in non hunting boundaries most of the time . The Morris Wetlands is a good example . The nuke plant prop . is non hunting , I understand this , but why do they then let there land have great habitat for deer . Makes no cents , dog don't hunt , just for national security one would think that they would clear it so terrorists don't have a great way to sneak in . Plus public land now must go back to IL. prairie days , those days we had no deer as they could not eat what was growing back then , the guys at the check in station there were saying how years ago they planted sunflowers and corn but are not allowed to now . Which brings up another point about the place . After deer season is closed they let in sharp shooters , saying hunters did not kill enough deer and then bring in truck loads of corn and shoot at night . Funny how the IDNR is so against baiting but then they do it , sounds like typical IL. shit . Anyway , we now need to hunt like we did 15 to 20 years ago , watch our scent , find where the deer are now , and understand that you will not see a deer every time you go out , Someone who shall remain nameless , you know Tony , thinks if he does not see a deer in a stand sit that there are no deer in the area .I remember 35 years ago when I went a whole season without seeing a deer , tracks , droppings , but no deer . Was just happy to be out hunting , now it seems we need to get a deer to have success . And the shine was so good I wanted to crawl into those bottles , jars , and was just contemplating on how to get into said bottle when you saw me . It's a thing . You land lovers would not understand .

???? Everybody has a great reason for not taking a deer. Guess blaming IDNR is better than nothing We've had blue tongue also, but I quite counting at 100 deer in October last year. You have to get out and find the deer. Here's a hint,,,most of them are "land lovers" too. Stop looking for them out on the lake.

Fill in the blank: I didn't see any deer because___it was too cold to hunt. sounds like Rhen.___________ I missed because __couldn't tell the difference was between the "ball" on the site, and what was floating around in my eyes. issue has since been fixed.__never adjust a pendulum site for the ground, and then hunt from a treestand without re-checking it.____________ Bear ate my ATV seat because__well, according to Bob, the wife and I had sex on the seat. according to the wife, that ain't true!_______________ (that's for you Todd) Other half's pissed at me because___I was actually right one time! calendar was marked when it happened.___________ (cause I'm still breathing) Hope the little lady finds someone to show her the ropes. Any blame against the IDNR is that it is there job to manage the herd . When numbers were high , yea lots of doe permits and extra seasons . Now numbers are low . the IDNR should close some areas for a year , no late doe for a year or 2 , drop doe tag permits in areas hard hit by BT . Maybe no does for a year . Years ago it was one bow tag and one gun tag . Some areas may need to do that . Hopscotch hunting areas . IE Starved Rock area , even numbered areas open one year and odd the next . Here is a big thing WE as hunters need to support these things if the IDNR does them and not bitch . BUT the IDNR needs to do these things . I also understand the spot Mark Miller is in , he gets pressure all the time from Springfield to kill lots of deer because the insurance companies do not like paying money for a deer vs car fight . So `they send lobbyists to get that message across to the politicians who pressure Mark . Now as for finding the deer , there were no deer in the Morris Wetlands hunting area late doe season . Hunted every inch , stupidly , twice , the second time was after the IDNR guy at the check in station said , " there are no deer there " but no I thought I could find one . All public land in this state goes thru the same thing . Never hunted , then opens , deer shot by all , next year deer shot by a lot , next , deer shot by some , till no deer . At this point guys stop going . Case in point Goose lake - Morris area 2 years ago even if you were in time for the lottery there was a chance you may not get picked . This last season you could get there after the draw and pick any area you wanted , hell there was never an area that was filled the whole season . Then what happens is , the areas will have only a few kills a year . You just have to look at the numbers on the fact sheets to see that . Again we as hunters need to understand that and have fun just being able to get out in the woods .
