I'm just wondering, why do people get drunk? Obviously, it can be for many reasons such as having a good time or drinking to forget things or whatever, but why bother doing that? Like why go out for the night and get so drunk you throw up, or sleep with someone you don't know or like, or so much that you just forget what you did? Or if you know how it effects you and the effects are bad, why do people put themselves through that? It doesn't help them and it's never that fun if you make yourself physically uncomfortable by throwing up or getting hung over. What does everybody else think? In my opinion you don't need alcohol, the fact that people seem to think they need alcohol to have fun or function is so lame. You don't need it to enjoy life. |

Getting drunk is one of the greatest mysteries of life to me, I will never understand the compulsion to use alcohol to that extent. I do my level best not to do at any given time, it's downright idiotic to me. Not to say I don't drink, I just make sure to do so moderately. |

I just think either people like being intoxicated because they have an excuse to be a dumbass or, they want to shield themselves from emotions. Which is the worst kind of drinking. |

I've always wondered this too. I've had a lot of experience in dealing with drunk people who start pissing on the street and stuff. It's not fun. Then you call them about it the next day and they're like "I don't remember it" and I'm just sat there thinking "Of course you don't remember it, you were blitzed out of your mind. Why do you do that to yourself?" to which they say "It's fun." It's not fun. I can think of at least 17 things that would be more fun than that. |

I think people get drunk to escape reality, that's what I do. I mean, sure, its a quick escape that has more downsides, but sometimes its very appealing. |

But why is it appealing? I've never drunk and had some sort of whacky out-of-body story or anything to tell so I don't really understand whats so fun about it. |

Its a temporary escape from your responsibilities and problems. Whilst drunk, you can rid of the limitations that those impose on you and enjoy yourself, even if you don't end up remembering half of it. I personally find it appealing because it makes me much more sociable. |

It may be due to culture? Alcohol has, as we know, been present throughout history. People now however, who go to nightclubs and such like seem to see it as a part of their person, in the same way you take a jacket out on a rainy day. I don't think anyone can actually explain this very well. |

Go read your own forum rules. You're not allowed to say that sort of thing lol. I also have no clue why it should be akin to taking out a jacket on a rainy day though. I can understand perhaps in medieval times drinking beer as opposed to water since the water would be dirty, but nowadays that isn't the case in some places at least, so why get completely shit-faced? I reckon people think they make better friends or are more confident or fun when they're drunk but I don't see it. |
