Exhibitions or competitions?

I was just wondering which events everyone prefers attending -- exhibitions or competitions. At "Skate for Hope," I happened to be seated beside an avid skating fan, who told me that while she used to prefer exhibition-type shows, she now favours competitions.

For my part, I think I'm still leaning toward exhibitions. I love the colourful, dramatic lighting, the showier aspects, and the generally positive mood.

Competitions, at least from what I've seen on YouTube, and from what I remember of watching skating at past Olympics, seem to be much more tense affairs. The lighting is a general white, like that of a hockey game, and a bit cold. Plus, if one has a favourite skater, wouldn't it be devasating to watch them perform and receive unfair marks?

So I'm just wondering which shows other fans prefer -- the colourful, convivial exhibitions, or the greater intensity of compeitions?

Interesting topic!

I also prefer exhibitions. I love the thrill of seeing your favourite skater win and the excitement and nerves that are clearly present during the competition, but exhibitions seem to change the mood and showcase what skating is really all about.

Exhibitions usually bore me... heh. There have been exceptions... I loved Emily's "I'll Stand By You"... Michelle Kwan's "Fields of Gold" and others... but generally I'm all about the thrill of the competition.

I see what you mean, but having watched a few of the TEB videos besides Emily's, I just don't see the appeal at all. They all seem to be:
skate a bit, JUMP!
skate a bit, JUMP!
skate a bit, JUMP!...

There's more jumping than skating. :(

Maybe I'm exaggerating, but one thing I love about exhibition routines, like Emily's "Taking Chances," or her delightful "Proud Mary," is that while there are a few jumps, most of the time is spent actually skating, which I really love to see.

The competition angle, I can definitely understand, but I prefer the way exhibtion routines are put together.

Particle Man, I totally agree. The thrill of competition is way, way, way more than just the jumps. Many people new to the sport have to be eased into the many aspects of competitive skating. Once you learn it, you find yourself on the edge of your seat watching the timing, the connective moves, the edging, preparation for each element, the jump entrances and jump exits, the interpretation, the choreography, the ice coverage, Matt Savoie, Jeremy Abbott, Patrick Chan and Takahiko Kozuka, Joannie Rochette, Yukari Nakano and Kim YuNa all have such gloriously rich programs.
