When I attended Skate for Hope last year, I saw something astonishing. Quite a number of fans brought flowers to the event. Yes, actual bouquets. Just prior to the doors opening, a couple of ushers came by and said that they would take all of the flowers from the audience members and give them to the skaters (presumably so the fans wouldn't throw the flowers onto the ice during the show). Has anyone here actually done this? Actually given flowers to a skater, I mean. Isn't it kind of an exercise in futility? After all, the skater won't know the person who gave her the flowers from Adam. All she will have is a card. I mean, sure, I suppose it's a nice gesture and all, but it just seems odd to me, because the fans don't actually bring the flowers to the skaters, and the skaters don't know the people whose names are on the card. I'm not decrying the practice. It seems kind of sweet. But it just seems a bit...futile, no? |

I never knew that they were collected beforehand at some events. I guess it takes away some of the fun of throwing them but it doesn't strike me as particularly odd. Either way, the skater is not really going to know who actually bought them. I think its more the gesture than anything else. Just fans showing their appreciation. The only reason I can think of for collecting them in that way is the one you mentioned, so they don't have to go through the trouble of collecting them on the ice later. |

I see what you mean. And you're right, it is a nice gesture. It reminds me of how opera divas or prima ballerinas used to receive bouquets after their performances. Still, it would be nice to be able to give the flowers to the skater in person. If nothing else, it would give both giver and receiver something else to talk about when you ask them for their autograph. Plus, the bouquet could then be a kind of "thank you" for getting the autograph. |
