Modern Belascan History: A Primer The Isthmus of Senova that contains the nation of Belasca has historically been home to dozens of distinct ethnic groups. While the concept of a single state to unite all of the Scavian peoples has existed since the Enlightenment, it was not until 1934 that the Scavian kingdoms of Zarovsca, Morensca, Bystrebansca and Kovsca were unified under the Treaty of Detva; it was under this new treaty that the modern nation of Belasca was born. The kingdom experienced relative stability until 1955, when Morenscan nationalists began rioting in the north. Fearing a revolution, King Andrei I (who was on Kovscan descent) barred Morenscan citizens from holding seats in parliament, and stationed Belascan soldiers in predominantly Morenscan cities to curb the riots. Tensions continued to rise until finally, in 1957, Andrei I was assassinated by a Morenscan revolutionary while on an official visit to Sobrazke. Andrei was succeeded by his son, Andrei II, who immediately enacted legislature segregating Morenscan citizens from the rest of the nation, followed by an increased military presence in Morenscan areas. This segregation caused alarm in Sobrazke, whose citizenry clamored for the government to intervene. However, Tsar Sergei refused to intervene for unknown reasons. Tensions continued to grow in Belasca as Morenscan citizens began to be detained in internment camps for increasingly petty crimes, such as loitering. Troubles between Belasca and Sobrazke reached their peak during what came to be known as the Camp Romir Incident in 1969, in which three Sobrazkian criminals of Morenscan descent were captured in Belasca and detained. Tsar Kirill II of Sobrazke, who had come to power in 1968 and was looking for a way to prove himself, declared war on Belasca when they refused to return the criminals. The War of Sobrazkian Aggression, as it is known in Belasca, was short-lived, ending in mind-1970. As a result of the war, Sobrazke set up a puppet government to enforce integration in Belasca. Belasca was released from Sobrazkian rule in 1991, and a new democratic government was put into power. However, ethnic tensions were still high, though a long period of reconstruction after two decades of foreign rule limited government oppression of minorities. Twenty years later, in late 2012, Miroslav Kopacheski, a Morenscan military general who served in the War of Sobrazkian Aggression, led a large-scale rebellion in the city of Zivoi in northern Belasca. His armies have continued to swiftly move south, and have managed to take several important cities; it is clear that his goal is to reclaim the former territory of Morensca and re-establish it as a sovereign nation. To the east, these civil conflicts have sparked similar movements in West Armandia, which is threatening secession as well. This thread is mostly meant to serve as a final interest check for the RP, as well as to check with Sobrazke and EA to make sure this all works with their histories and current governments. Of course, anyone who is interested in participating may use this thread to plan strategy, trash talk, etc. Go crazy. |
