If you're wondering what the gold saucer is all about![]() It's the lands themepark with those 7 areas to it all connected by the hub in the middle. It has its own currency called GP (game points I assume), the main way you get these is by playing the games. Some games cost GP to play, others reward GP for playing. The ones that give the serious prizes tend to cost GP to play so you'd want to grind some if you're after those. Event/Round Squares - Are story events only and aren't places you'd be going otherwise. Ghost Square - An inn, costs GP to stay there. not very useful. Speed Square - A rollercoaster rail shooter thing, good fun with a great prize for the top tier of score. Costs 10 GP to play. Wonder Square - A general arcade with lots of stuff to play, I think everything here costs gil and rewards GP so this is the main thing to grind for GP. loads of stuff to play here, more unlocks later in the game. Giant Chicken Square - Right now you can bet on Chocobo racing by checking racer stats, odds and making a decision. I think you bet GP to win more GP. Later on when you've caught/bred your own chocobo you can race here for some serious prizes and GP. Battle Square - A gauntlet of sorts, you can only pick one character to run in. In the arena you face a string of monsters one after another. In between battles you can make the decision to keep going or quit there, the more rounds you go on for the more BP (battle points) you earn which can be exchanged for prizes at the counter, theres some amazing stuff there but it takes a while to get. If you die during it you get nothing so its about knowing when to quit. The catch in all this is you have to spin a wheel before the next round, the wheel contains a bunch of handicap of every sort. Everything from breaking your weapon, to disabling green materia to turning you into a frog or halfing your HP. The more you progress the more of those you're going to have to deal with so it can become a real challenge. Probably just worth having a look at this stuff now but later in the game its worth spending a lot of time here. Edited by Bobbygondo, Jun 7 2012, 11:35 AM.

/sigh Though in fairness I'm amazed you've avoided it up until now, its probably the most famous videogame plot point and is mentioned all over the place for its significance. That was why I asked at the start if you knew anything about the story, was surprised you didn't given how often its spoiled. Edited by Aurora, Jun 13 2012, 09:51 AM.

In fairness considering I still don't know the character and place names there is a good chance I have read the story and just haven't clicked yet. I will probably finish the game and be like "Ohhhhhh that's what all those people were referencing" |

And for extreme awkwardness, the date scene you could have had last night. Edited by Aurora, Jun 13 2012, 10:52 AM.

Quite a bit actually, I'm probably not going to join the "one of the best games ever made" club and I am unlikely to play another one off my own back because there are some key factors, like the combat which I don't like but that's more down to taste then just bad game mechanics. The story and the characters are really good though and are making the game pretty enjoyable. I was pretty sad after it happened what cloud was having a go at Seth but when it was actually happening I was more annoyed that I knew it was coming. |

The battle system really took off for me later in the game when you start searching for ultimate weapons (you got Aeris's already but I think you can guess why that was available so soon), the best materia of its kind and collecting level 4 limit breaks. I like how the system is where it hands you nothing whatsoever and if you want the strongest abilities in the game you have to go out of your way to get them. Then it hits that sweet spot where you begin to feel really powerful and all your efforts of building limits, levelling materia and collecting weapons/accessories pay off. For the story, I think you'll like disc 2. Its very introspective and fleshes out the characters who've been in the background up to now. I think if this game was made in 2012 the game would end where you are now and disc 2 would be FFVII-2, its very different in tone and the end of disc 1 "incident" is a real game changer in terms of everything, the story arcs in a different way and is far more focused whereas disc 1 had a lot of moving from point A to point B searching for info and sephiroth. |
