No Posts in Forum 0 viewers Topics: 0 Replies: 0 Refuge Village Village Beach The village itself is one giant beach, built ontop of rocks moved to provide support or its foundations built on the rock beneath the sand. Most of the beach is protected from rip tides and other dangers by large rocks and sandbars, making it a good and nearby place for swimmers for both people and Drers. The beach also contains a large pile of stones, perfect for sunning from mid-day to late afternoon, and an area of little tide pools perfect for shell searching. Most are small, with only a few rooms, though some are more elaborately built and the higher ranked and their families usually live there. Some houses are made of stone, though when people began to realize that Thread rarely, if ever, hits the beach the village is on they began to build their houses from wood. In the center of the houses is a large well, and when the island's aquifers can't refill it fast enough water from the streams and lake are dumped into it. No Posts in Forum 0 viewers Topics: 0 Replies: 0 Butchery & Mill The Butchery and the Mill are next door to each other, with the small corral of the Butchery using the mill as one of its fences. Each have one normal entryway, and one large one, though the Butchery's large entrance is carved into the cliffs. The Butchery is, of course, used to butcher the village's cattle and other meat animals, while the mill used to grind up grains to produce flour, which is then transported to the Gathering Hall Kitchen's to make into bread or other products. No Posts in Forum 0 viewers Topics: 0 Replies: 0 Drerling & Candidate Housing A large and long building, commonly called the Barracks, the biggest in the village, is used to house searched candidates and Drerlings. Drerlings are kept in the Western end of the building closest to the ocean, and candidates are kept in the Eastern end. Each pair and candidate is assigned a room, and each room can hold up to two candidates, or a Drer and its Rider. Three candidates can be squished in, but it's uncomfortable and usually tries to be avoided. It is where the sick or injured come, be they Drer or Human. Humans enter through the main door of course, but Drers can get there through the lava tubes. There are rooms for Healers that know their skills well, the Masters, and rooms for their Apprentices, separate from the patient rooms. Not much wood is used, so the sawmill isn't always in use. Things like tables, chairs, chests, etc. are made here when lumber for building isn't needed. Though Firewood is always a necessity. No Posts in Forum 0 viewers Topics: 0 Replies: 0 Gathering Hall The Gathering Hall doesn't seem very large from the outside, as only the corner of the building sticks out from the cliffs, but inside it is expansive, giving a "bigger than it looks" effect. Here village feasts and entertainment is held, and there is always some sort of food and drink available for village folk and Drer-riders to munch on. Behind the Dining area of the Gathering hall are the kitchens, which lead to a large, multilevel storage cave. No Posts in Forum 0 viewers Topics: 0 Replies: 0 Subforums: Kitchens, Storage Lava Tubes The Lava Tubes twist and wind across the island, so complex in some places that its easy to get lost. In some places the ground above is thin enough that holes and cracks allow light to get through, but in others the tunnels are so deep that they lead to the very heart of the volcanoes. Not every lava tube can be reached from the village, as some do not go that way or others are simply blocked off. The Hatching Caves are located within them, as is housing for the Drers and sometimes their Riders. Near these Docks is the Fisherman's hut, a place for fisherman to store their gear and sleep while they are on duty but not out at sea. Many boats are usually tied to the docks or out on the waters. Swimming here is forbidden, as riptides are more common here than at the other beaches around the island. Come play and win prizes! These are the festival grounds! A little area located between the Butcher's and the Barracks that is used for festivals and other village-wide activities! The sand here is soft and warm, and different stands are set up around a large platform in the center! Dancing, music, food, games, races, you name it! Here you'll find it all! It is thick and foreboding, and the sounds of all sorts of animals eerily echo out. Only the smallest of Drers can navigate the edges of the jungle with ease, but the deep interiors are for smaller animals, and with Thread rarely hitting the heart of the island who knows what lurks in its depths. The ground here is prone to crumbling away into the old Lava Tunnels and Magma Chamber below. During the wet season on the rest of the island the air around Savior Lake is cool enough for most of the plants to go into hibernation, and during the dry season they burst into life again. It is this lake that allows habitation of the island to be possible, for small streams make their way through the rock around it and out into the rest of the island. No Posts in Forum 0 viewers Topics: 0 Replies: 0 Southern Mountain A huge and imposing presence that reaches down to touch the very beach that the Islanders first set foot on. It stretches across the entire Southern half of Refuge and almost nothing grows on it except scrubby plants and a few twisted trees. It is the only place on Refuge Island with snow, which surrounds a huge and gaping crater at the top, set at a slant. When viewed from the village it looks undisturbed, but from the sea you can see the huge scar that is its crater. It is a popular spot though, as the waves here are calm and the water warm, but the only way to get to it is either by a trek through the jungle or by air. It's also surrounded by steep cliffs. It stretches along almost the entire Eastern side of the Island, and isn't really a cove at all. Much of its length is covered by palm trees and it's a popular spot for Firelizards. The water is clear and shallow for much of the ways out, and dolphins can sometimes be seen playing a little ways offshore. If you're lucky one might just decide to come say hi! At night you can see every star in the sky, and during the day they are usually as clear as the water below. Close to shore the water is shallow, protected by rocks, but once you get passed the rocks the ocean suddenly becomes a dangerous place. Here sandbars and reefs may have broken gaps in which rip tide currents may rush through. If swimmers, or even ships, are not careful, they may be sucked out to deeper waters.
