Roy Wits swung the heavy foresting ax once more, chopping the freshly cut lumber log into smaller planks of wood. He then set the heavy tool down and wiped his arm across his forehead. Standing up from his bending over position, he felt his back pain with the effort, and grunted a bit, standing up slower. He looked around, he was one of the only foresters left on his work shift. Perfect. He thought quietly, opening up a small compartment near his work station. There was a small cache of food and money that he had stolen from one of the peacekeepers there. He didn't plan on using it himself, he planned on giving it to a family who lived across the street from him. Thinking about this whole situation, he remembered the incident in the past... "Then I hearby find the defendant, Roy Wits guilty of thievery. The punishment shall be three lashes of the whip." The hammer rang out, sending ever lasting fear into Roy. He knew what his punishment was going to be if he got caught when he got into this mess. Looking over the crowd gathered, he saw the family, standing by the edge there. Their little child watching Roy with pleading eyes. Roy smiled grimly, before a peacekeeper shoved him, signaling him to remove his shirt. So he did as he was told, and watched the crowd as he braced himself for the coming pain. He could already feel the lashes and- The first crack came suddenly, sending fiery pain through every muscle and nerve in his back. Roy grunted, gritting his teeth and clenching his fists, trying to brace himself for the next hit. The next one came suddenly after that, sending even more pain through his back. This time, Roy cried out helplessly. He could feel the tears brimming on his eyes, and they threatened to spill over. The third one came after that, quickly and swiftly, and this time, Roy didn't brace himself. He let his emotions spill over, crying out in pain, and dropping to the ground, his back severely wounded, Roy sobbed in pain... Roy remembered that memory. It haunted him, tortured his dreams, stalked him around every corner. But yet he still refused to stand by and let those families out there starve, so he continued to steal, even though he knew what the punishment was; he still had scars from the last whipping... |

Nala had lingered behind to finish up the work. She noticed the money, but didn't say anything. For all she knew, it was his anyway. |

Roy kept a brisk pace as he walked down the crowded streets, making sure to cover the supplies withing the folds of his jacket. His heart beat faster than ever, and he was sure someone would stop him before he reached the door. But no one did, and he made it to the door of the house. Knocking twice, he opened and shut the door behind him, exhaling deeply. Quickly, he moved across the small apartment floor, setting the food and money underneath one of the pillows on the bed, and then quickly leaving without another word. As he was halfway down the street, a peacekeeper stopped him. "And just where do you think you're going, kid?" the low voice growled. |

Emeric loaded the last log onto the waiting truck. Excellent, he thought. Another day's work completed. And hopefully, he added, one of the last days I'll have to work for this tyrannical Capitol. Gently sticking his sore, blistering hands into the pocket of his jacket, Emeric wandered down the lonely street toward the city square. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the short frame of Roy Wits slinking out of the entrance to a small hovel. Huh, he thought. I wonder what Roy's up to this time. Emeric knew Roy, they were on the same logging crew. He had an infamous reputation as a thief among the District. Still, even though the two had never spoken, Emeric respected the boy. He helped others at his own personal expense, and a trip to the whipping post was certainly not an easy price. But still, Roy was often seen during whippings held at the town square. Emeric admired Roy's apparent defiance of the Capitol and it's cruel, unfair system of poverty for the laborers in the Districts. Not many of the people he knew had the courage to take a stand like Roy. With a sinking feeling in his stomach, Emeric saw the stocky form of an armed Peacekeeper heading towards the distracted Roy. Would Roy soon make another appearance at the whipping posts? He had most likely just deposited stolen goods in the home of a needy family. Emeric squared his shoulders. No. He wouldn't let them haul away this boy. He too would find the courage to take a stand. He hurried towards the Peacekeeper, who had stopped Roy by this time. "Sir!" He called. "Sir, thank goodness you've found him!" The peace keeper turned with a confused look on his face. "Are you looking for this theif?" He asked. "Oh, sir, Roy hasn't been up to thieving today," he lied. Now to come up with an excuse to pacify the Peacekeeper. Why would Roy be visiting random hovels? "He, um, was hit in the head by a flying piece of split log towards the end of our shift. He seemed very confused and acted quite unlike himself when he left, and he wandered away from the direction of his home. A bunch of us from the squad have been looking everywhere for him. He obviously doesn't know which hove--I mean, house, is his, so we're trying to lead him back to his home and have him see a healer." Emeric hoped that his lie was good enough to get Roy out of his usual whipping. He glanced over at Roy, hoping desperately that he would understand and play along. |

Roy was shocked for a moment when someone approached the armed peacekeeper. It was Emeric...the two were on the same logging shift together. Roy listened to the blatant lie that his coworker told, and then the peacekeeper slowly turned to him. "Roy, you have quite the reputation. But I trust this man, so you'll go free this time." he snarled and stalked off. Roy looked confused to play along with the lie. Then he turned to Emeric. "I owe you big time." he said. "If you or your family ever need anything...just let me know. I won't forget this." he smiled and kept at that same pace, keeping his head low and walking down the street. |

Emeric smiled as he watched his coworker walk down the cobbled path. It seemed like he had just made an ally against the Capitol--and maybe even more importantly, a friend. Perhaps Roy's promise would come in handy some day. Emeric turned towards his pathetic excuse for a shelter. As he crawled into bed, he thought about Roy and the good deed that he was able to do for him. With a half smile, he realized that that alone was a small victory against the capitol of Panem. People weren't supposed to stick up for each other. They weren't supposed to make alliances. And they definitely weren't allowed to defy and lie to figures of Capitol authority. A tremor of fear ran through him briefly. A lot of the things he had been doing, saying, and even thinking could get him killed. Then he thought of Roy and the smile returned. I f that day ever came, he would face it like Roy faced the whip. He didn't want the whip. He didn't act the way he did because of the whip, but rather because he wasn't afraid of the consequence. Emeric knew that if a day ever came where he faced death, he would greet it with the bravery of Roy. Yes, the whip was unfortunate. But Emeric was willing to pay the price of his actions. And if his death was necessary to help bring down the Capitol, then so be it. |

Roy made it home without another interruption, thankfully. Nobody seemed to know what was going on, and they all seemed to think he was better stayed away from, which was good. The less contact he had, the better, which was why he hadn't stopped to speak with the family when he had delivered the goods. Contact gave witnesses...witnesses could be bribed, and bribing them for information could get him whipped again. Shuddering as he stepped through the door to his small house, he removed his jacket and sat down on the bed near the door. Today had been a long day, and his hands ached from the cold weather. Work was even more harsh because when the weather got colder, everyone wanted more warmth, and more warmth meant more lumber, which was the main industry of Roy's district. Suddenly, his mind wandered, and he began to think about Emeric. Why had he stepped in today? He could have sat by and watched Roy get whipped like the last few times...but he had taken a stand? The two had never actually spoken, or had the chance to really talk for that matter, until today. But yet the young man stepped in to pull Roy out of a mistake...that was what he didn't get. All of his coworkers generally tended to avoid him, but for some reason this one person who had never really spoken with, only worked alongside, had decided to help him... Roy sighed, shaking his head and deciding he would find out tomorrow at work. He was going to ask Emeric about it himself, that was truly the only way to get the truth out of this. With these thoughts on mind, he lay backwards and soon drifted off to sleep... |

Nala stayed out for a while longer. After returning from the woods, she wandered through the streets, practicing her Capitol accent. Doing something quirky like that was always calmed her nerves. Her nerves. Sometimes she just... got them. There wasn't anything anyone had done, no peacekeeper threatening her or her family, no insane lumberjack cutting head after head of innocent people. But her skin prickled and she'd run away from them until her legs gave out from under her to avoid whatever was after her. But it didn't leave. And she had a feeling it wouldn't leave. Thus she had worked out this new system, so she wouldn't not be able to work in the morning. When she said she ran until her legs gave out, she meant that literally. So she just continued to talk in that strange little accent as she wandered the streets. |

Ana took her kill of the day, two squirrels and a rabbit, to her home. She knew her mother could cut them up for her, then she would sell them and the pelts seperately. They would have a good stew tonight, Ana was certain of it. She hated the fact that she had to kill the small animals that were always in the forests where she and her father worked at cutting down the trees, but it kept her and her family alive, so in the long run, it was worth it. Once her mom had cut the meat off in the right sized pieces, she took it, packaged in the same paper that meat from the butcher was packaged in, and left to go sell it. She always had the same route, knowing who liked what kinds of meat, and how long ago they had bought from her. Most of them only had enough money to buy from her once a week, but that was fine, since she had lots of customers. Today on her list was the elderly couple about four blocks away, they loved rabbit meat, and the young man that lived three blocks from the actual butchers shop. As she was heading to her second location, one hand in her pocket, fingering the money she had just made, she noticed that there was a girl wandering around. "Hello, are you lost?" She said, thinking that the girl might have gotten turned around in all the winding streets that filled this area. |

Nala looked up, words stopping in her mouth. "Oh, uh, no not really," she replied with a slight smile. She cleared her throat. "So... I'm sorry, I feel like I should know you.." |
