Kyanite Miso was a beauty. There was no other way to put it. Today, though, that beauty was marred by a lone tear that slipped down her perfect, crystal cheek. She stared into the water of the pond she had found on her walk. She needed to be away from the hordes of people who wanted to use her. The boys wanted her beauty. The girls wanted her money. The teachers wanted her to solve complex, impossible problems to help them get special attention from the Capitol. Kyani stared into the crisp, clear image before her in the water. The mirror reflection was marred temporarily as the lone tear left it's wet trail down her cheek and plopped into the pool, sending minuscule ripples through the copy of her perfect face. Kyani tucked her head between her knees and let out a muffled sob. What was the point of being beautiful, smart, rich, and talented? She was untouchable, with no true friends in her life. Her body was racked with another round of sobs. Would she ever find someone that didn't want to use her? |

Zaida steadied her bow, her eyes looking right down the shaft of the arrow to where she wanted it to hit. Her eyes narrowed, she pulled back ever so slightly on the thin string... and let go. She loved the feeling of the string vibrating against her cheek, the whistling noise the arrow made as it sailed past her face and into the center of the human-shaped target. Well, almost the center. "Zaida!! Look at this!" Her father screamed, running to the target and pointing, his face turning a very bright red, "You missed the center!" He hollered, and when Zaida squinted she could see that she did, indeed miss the center of the target. Sure, she made it in the bullseye, but it was not even a centimeter away from the dot that marked the very center of the target. "This," He said, pointing yet again to the arrow, "will not be a killing blow," Zaida could tell her father was really, truly angry by the way the vein on the left side of his forehead bulged and pulsed. "Oh, scratch that. It will be a killing blow. It will be the awful shot that gets you killed!" Whipping around, he grasped the arrow in his thick hands and yanked the arrow out of the target. Zaida said nothing as he continued to holler at her. She didn't feel anger at her father, only anger at herself. How could she have missed the center? This was one of the worst shots of the day. "Dad, I think it is time I take a break," She pleaded, looking up at her father. "Take a break? TAKE A BREAK!?" He was now yelling again, his face flushing that same color red, "We've only been training for 2 1/2 hours! We might as well just call it quits for the day. It was a pathetic practice anyway." Without another word, he burst out the training center doors and marched down the street towards home. Zaida set back up all the targets and practice dummies she had knocked over or moved, picked up the arrows she had brought, then put them in their shaft and slung it on her back. She gripped her light-weight, pure silver bow in left hand. She was a lefty, unlike most people. Her father was a lefty as well. Her mother... well, she couldn't bear to think of her mother. Her mother was such a disgrace to their family... She was so deep in thought, that she almost didn't notice the girl crouched a few yards away, silently sobbing into her knees. It wasn't until she tripped over the girl that she realized someone was there. "Hey, watch where you are going!" She screeched, turning on the girl with her cold, ice blue eyes. |

Kyani let out a barely audible squeal as she was jerked out of her thoughts by this girl. She looked up into the girl's steely eyes. Anger flared through her. She had her own problems. "I'm not the one at fault here. I wasn't even moving," she said, switching her sobs into hard, cold indifference. She noticed the girl's face for the first time. It seemed flushed, much like Kyani's own face appeared at the moment. She doubted that the girl was embarrassed. She must be frusterated about something. She also looked familiar... "Wait," she asked, "do I know you?" |

Zaida folded her arms across her chest and let out a loud, exaggerated sigh. "I'm sure you do. I've got the best shot in the District," She said haughtily, making sure to stand a little taller and push her chest out. She reached down to brush the dirt off of her pants, not even bothering to help the other girl up. "However, it seems that I don't know your name. Who are you?" She asked, not really interested, just trying to make small-talk. |

"Hmph." Kyani snorted, immediately disliking the girl's haughtiness. She hadn't even told her her name. "No," she decided. "I don't know you, after all. I just thought I'd seen you at school. But it figures that you're a Career." She stood, and eyed the girl appraisingly. Walking around her in a circle, she said, "you're muscular, look quick, and I suppose you're attractive enough for the Capitol audiences. However, it's going to take more than your word to prove that you're the best shot in the District." She looked up into the girl's eyes. "So, Career, my name is Kyani Miso, and I don't like your attitude. However, I am curious to know how you found your way to my thinking place." |

Zaida watched the girl as she circled around her. Each time she complimented her, she was hardly flattered. She knew she was amazing, and didn't need some commoner to tell her so. If it was from President Snow himself, that would be so much different. But she was just some average school girl. She didn't expect the girl to face her, look her right in the eye, and say without cowering, "So, Career, my name is Kyani Miso, and I don't like your attitude. However, I am curious to know how you found your way to my thinking place." She glared back, but was disheartened that Kyani didn't get scared. Zaida hadn't ever met a girl roughly her age that wasn't afraid of her. "I was just wandering on my way home from training," She said simply, wiping a bead of sweat off of her forehead. "and I came across it." She took in a deep breath just to breathe in the pure, clean air. For a second, she was acting normal. She didn't want to rip anyone apart. She wasn't thinking of the Games, killing her last opponent, or living in the Victor's Village. At this moment, she wasn't tainted by the Capitol. But everything has to end. As soon as she exhaled, she was filled with bloodlust and anger once again. "You better believe I'm the best shot in District 1! Heck, I'm probably the best in all of Panem!" Her voice was escalating to a louder and louder volume with each word. "And I can prove it to ya, too!" |

Kyani didn't even blink as the girl began to shout. "The best shot in all of Panem?" She mused. "This I have to see. If you're sure you can back up this claim, I'd love to watch you in action sometime." As she waited for the Career to answer, she was distracted by a surprising thought that came to her. This was actually an okay conversation. Sure, the girl seemed like a stuck up jerk. No, actually, she acted like a Career. But she WAS a Career, so that was to be expected. Also, by some stroke of luck the girl didn't seem to recognize her from her family status. The Misos were the closest thing District One had to a celebrity family. Kyani's father was Talc Miso, the wealthiest man in the District. He owned and operated the majority of the District's mines and jewelry stores. But of course, the Career would have spent her whole life training for the Games. She surely didn't have time for the celebrity craze in the District. Most likely, she didn't care one ounce about Kyani's status. And, strangely, that made Kyanite very happy. Finally, someone who could give it to her straight! She had never had someone be rude to her, or even raise their voice at her. She was surprised that it was a refreshing change. At least the girl didn't act like Kyani walked on water. "Look," she sighed. "I'm sorry I tripped you. You don't have to prove your skills if you don't want to. If you have to go into the Arena, that will be proof enough." She got sad at that thought, briefly thinking of this girl dying in the Games. She brushed the thought away instantly. The Capitol's Games brought fame and fortune to her District. What more could she want? |

Zaida was taken aback by the sudden change of mood in the conversation. The way Kyani apologized in such a sincere tone... when she hadn't done anything... it angered Zaida at first. Then she realized that this girl was trying to be nice. She shrugged simply, squinting at the sun, "I could show you if you want." She twirled a piece of hair in her fingers, her usual ploy for moments when she really didn't have much to say to someone else. |

Kyani smiled, glad that the girl was calm. "Sure," she said. "I don't often have cause to go to the training center and watch the Careers." She stopped, realizing that she only knew her acquaintance as "the Career" or simply "girl." She turned. "By the way, I never caught your name." |

Zaida didn't like to introduce herself. She found it insulting when someone didn't already know her name. But she bit her tongue and said, "I'm Zaida." She said simply, not bothering to hold out a hand or smile. She squeezed her bow a little, then looked up at the sky. It wasn't too late, so she could go to the training center for a short while before her dad wanted to do one-on-one training for that day. "Alright Kyani," she said, turning towards the training center, "follow me." |
