Katie knew the drill "get ready for school" perfectly. Whenever her sister woke her up with those four simple words, she knew exactly what to do. Nath would already have breakfast waiting on a plate for Katie, since they always just ate yesterday's leftovers. And Nath was never around at that point. Katie knew better than to look for her sister in the house, Nath always slipped out as soon as Katie was awake, they rarely spoke to each other in the mornings.

Katie yawned as she slipped out of bed this morning, and stumbled into the bathroom. She washed her face, and used the toilet, then returned to her room, more awake now. Carefully depositing her pajamas back on her bed, she changed into clean clothes for the day. She walked downstairs, and put on her shoes, tying them tightly with perfectly identical knots. Then she sat at the table, and pulled the cloth off of the top of the plate that had her food on it. Setting the cloth on her lap, she started eating the still delicious pork chop from last night. Though it wasn't as wonderful reheated as it was last night, it was still good, and a nice change from her typical breakfast of reheated fish.

When she was done with her meal, she set the dishes into the sink, and scooped up her things for school. She didn't have a bag to carry them in, but that was alright for her, since she didn't have very many things. Pulling her jacket around her shoulders, she stepped outside and walked to the end of the driveway to wait for the bus. Jacob Miller was already waiting there, a boy who was three years above her in school, but probably four or five years older than her. He was a bully, but he didn't bug her because his parents bought fish from her sister. Also at the bus stop was Maggie Parkins, a girl of her own age. Maggie was a nice enough girl, but she didn't like to talk to Katie, since Katie wasn't one of the few rich kids that went to her school.

The bus arrived shortly, as it always did. Katie got on last, since she was the last to arrive and sat in the very first seat, the one nobody but her liked. The doors squeaked shut, and the bus creaked forward with a loud rumble. The kids in the back squealed with pleasure as the bus jolted them up and down. Katie didn't know why they enjoyed it so much. She was the first to get off when the bus got to their school, since she was sitting in the front. She walked confidently through the crowds of students, ranging from scared little kindergarteners, to high school seniors.

Their school was a big school, serving everyone in the area. It had four buildings, all arranged around a huge central garden. In the West building, all the elementary students, grades 1-5, had their classes, and this was Katie’s destination, since she was a first grader this year. In front of the L shaped building was a playground, several sets of swings and a few slides. It was covered in woodchips so that the kids wouldn’t track sand inside, but still wouldn’t get hurt if they fell off. The North building was the destination for all of the middle school students grades 6-8. In front of their building, there was a large field, where they could play soccer and baseball. In the East building sat the library, cafeteria, and computer labs. Detention was in the East building as well, but Katie was a good kid, so she didn’t really know what the detention room looked like. Kindergarteners went to school in the East building too.The soccer field actually took up some of the space in front of it too. The South building was the building where the high school students were, and everyone looked up to that building, since it was the tallest. In front of it sat a garden with lots of paths and benches for the highschoolers to eat on, since they were allowed to eat wherever they wanted, unlike the other grades that were stuck in the cafeteria until they were done eating. There was a big fountain in the center of the buildings, and between each building was a big metal gate that was open at the beginning and end of the day. A red brick path in the shape of a + went out to each of these gates, and circled around the fountain. Everyone hung out in the middle here, and in the fields, though the younger students tended not to go to the gardens, and for the most part the highschoolers wouldn’t be seen dead in the playground.
