Asalaamu alaykum. Brothers and sisters, I know this to be controversial but due to a personal conflict in my own life with a few people close to me listening to the Masjid and beginning this Ramadan on the wrong day as a result. I cannot stress more, as with every month in the Islamic calendar begins with the sighting of the hilal (crescent moon.) "Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramadan) observe fast. and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwal) break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast for thirty days." - Abu Huraira |

This debate should not even be a debate. The moon sighting is the Sunnah left to us and we should be trying to revive the Sunnah inshAllah. We need to share this more. |

Agreed. I don't see why we are debating in the first place when there is overwhelming evidence that the moon sighting is essential. Especially found in the ahadith! Though, even among my own family subhanAllah this year we debated and debated. Even if it's too cloudy to see the moon, as in this following Hadith, narrated by Aisha (ra) the Prophet Muhammad (saws) used to fast 30 days due to the failure to see the moon with the naked eye. "The Apostle of Allah (pbuh) used to count the days in Sha'ban in a manner he did not count any other month; then he fasted when he sighted the new moon of Ramadan; but if the weather was cloudy he counted thirty days and then fasted. |
