Hi, I switched from a i7920 to a Xeon X5650 yesterday. I wanted to overclock so it was suggested that the Xeon would be a better choice. Considering they are pretty cheap I picked one up. However after swapping it out and putting a new cooler on it started to put out a very strong burning smell. Which starts only after about 20-30 seconds or so. I had ran my previous CPU (same setup) for several years without issue. The CPU as probably known runs at a lower voltage, but has more cores. I am also nearly certain its the VRM bank as it's heat sink is burning hot. The weird thing is the computer boots and runs fine other wise, well at least for a minute (I keep shutting it down for obvious reasons). Could that alone fry the banks? And is it possible to lose one chip and still have a functional system. Of course if it switch back to the 920. The 1366 boards are very hard to find anymore Please help. I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
