How to Spot Raiders & Defenders - Identifying Puppets

Raiding and defending groups tend to use puppet (secondary) nations to carry out their missions. This protects the identity of those who are involved in the mission and prevents any opposing groups tracking their movement (and sabotaging their mission). I have written down some techniques for finding puppets which are used for raids and defences - helpful for a defender or a recruiter who gets frustrated when their telegrams are ignored (like me).

There are 3 types of puppets

  • Clean Puppets - a brand new puppet which has never been used before. Located in feeder regions.
  • Sleepers - a puppet which is left to become inactive (or exist in a dormant state) for an extended period of time so that they can gain regional influence (the ability to carry out raids and defences efficiently).
  • Fun Puppets - a puppet which is intended to be used frequently by the owner for roleplaying or some other peaceful activity. Fun puppets are not used for raids and are only used rarely for defences.

Now, let's look at what common features these puppets have.

Flags

Genuine players nearly always change their flag from the default (I did, you probably did too). However, they do this within 1 hour after creating their nations and they may not do it immediately. If the flag is changed to a custom flag which is designed well (it is complex and unique), then the nation is either a fun puppet or is a genuine player.

Stats

Nation stats do not say much about a new nation. Unless you look at them closely! Below are the stats of 75% of raiders:

Civil Rights - Good
Economy - Good
Political Freedoms - Good

Civil Rights - Average
Economy - Average
Political Freedoms - Average

Either of the above nation stats are commonly used by raiders. Raiders are frequently told to avoid the complex options when creating a puppet nation (so as to blend in/not look too extreme) and that produces these stats.

Name

I'll share some names of puppets which I think are typical raider/defender names:

NoPainNoGain
Joey0826
Stranglethorn
Pussy Lover
Dragon Warrior
01692489803000034940

Generally, look out for names which would make you think 'oh, they're a typical player' as that is what raiders and defenders try to make you believe. Their puppets will not be called 'Iamadefender'!

Motto

Raiders and defenders will choose simple mottos which sound 'typical' such as:

Democracy
Freedom and Liberty
Hello
Never be Defeated

Anyway, you get the point. They are mostly simple (generic) mottos which will not be able to identify who owns the puppet. Not many raiders or defenders spend a great amount of time making their puppets.

Sleepers - History

If you're looking in a sinker or a puppet storage region, you are likely to find sleepers. Just take a look at their nation's history. If they have endorsed 2 people within 24 hours, they are likely to be a raider or a defender. Have they been WA delegate before? How long did they have WA membership for? Look for signs which suggest that they have been on a raid or a defence.

WA Membership

Raiders and defenders usually apply for WA membership in advance. If a puppet has asked for WA membership a few days ago and did not actually accept that WA membership, they are almost certainly a raider or a defender. Most genuine players will be excited by the WA and will want to join as soon as possible (they will not wait for very long before accepting the WA membership, unlike puppets).

With these skills, you should be able to identify a puppet nation very quickly. Remember, defenders and raiders use sleepers and clean puppets. Raiders only tend to use them once to avoid being tracked. Defenders sometimes do not care about using a brand new puppet every single time - those defenders also tend not to cover up their national history.

[box]How do I know this? I have used puppet nations to infiltrate a number of defending and raiding groups such as the Black Hawks, the Black Riders, 10000 Islands (TITO) and the United Defenders League (UDL). I have never actually done a raid or a defence but I know how raiders and defenders work - I have a lot of experience with how they operate and am willing to share this information with other people.[/box]
