The stench of decaying flesh filled the air. Nearly twenty bodies littered the barren ground. Their dried blood mixed with the dirt and stained the earth a dark brown. Whatever treasure these demons might have been hording had long since been carried off by the victorious party. All they left behind were the fallen warriors and questions. Who had attacked? Why had they attacked? To be sure, struggles between groups occurred every few minutes in the demon world and often over the most harmless of slights. But the one question that rose above them all was why would all the men in the group be slaughtered but a two-year-old girl be left behind?

The poor child's cries reached Ukon's ears shortly after his arrival at the battle grounds. For a few moments, the demon couldn't determine if he'd even heard a sound let alone pinpoint from which direction it came. Soon, however, the gentle breeze of that warm afternoon carried the young girl's faint cries to him, and Ukon immediately began scouring the surrounding landscape for any sign of the child. The only place that could be hiding the small girl would be the tall grasses by the river bank, and since that had been the direction from which the wind was blowing, Ukon deemed it his best option.

Sure enough, as the demon neared the grasses, the child's faint whines became more noticeable, and soon Ukon came across the young demoness herself. The small girl sat on the side of the riverbank, her tan fox ears just barely hidden by the overgrown plants. Dirt covered her face and arms and stained what otherwise appeared to be a nice set of clothing. The child had no other items with her, nothing that would provide a name or a clue as to her family or her homeland. All she seemed to possess were the brown sandals, brown pants, and white short-sleeved shirt that she was wearing.

The rustling of the grass as Ukon approached drew the toddler's attention. Golden orbs peered up from a dirt-covered, tear-stained face, and the young girl's innocence and defenselessness immediately struck the older demon to the core. "It's alright, young one," Ukon gently reassured. With great ease, so as not to frighten the already scared babe, he lowered himself to her level. Sniffling and on the verge of bursting once again into tears, she continued to stare at him. Ukon reached a hand out, but she instantly recoiled and began to whine. Still, her golden eyes stayed honed in on the stranger. The demon wasn't sure if she was going to let him near her or if she would recoil once again. He couldn't leave her, though. That she was an abandoned babe was enough for him to adopt her then and there, but those golden eyes would haunt him forever if he walked away.

So Ukon tried once more, this time reaching even more slowly towards her. "Shh, shh," he soothed, "I won't hurt you, dear." The toddler recoiled slightly, but Ukon persisted. "It's alright. You can trust me." Tears flowed freely from her innocent eyes, leaving clear trails down her dirt-stained cheeks. She whimpered softly, but as Ukon's hand drew nearer her shoulder, the young girl stayed still. The demon took this as a sign of her trust and continued to reach for her. Finally, his hand came to rest on her shoulder, and though she flinched at the initial contact, the toddler didn't move.

"What's your name, young one?" Ukon inquired. But as he wiped water from her eyes, she burst into tears and didn't respond to his question. "Oh, you poor thing!" he softly exclaimed. "You must be terribly frightened. You've been through so much. Shh, shh."

Gently, he pulled her to his chest, patted her back, and stroked her head. Still she cried, and as her tiny fists latched onto his shirt, Ukon picked her up and stood. He noticed that she didn't feel abnormally light, which told him that she'd at least been fed rather consistently (one could never be sure with the types of demons and thugs that lived in the area), and that plus her dirty but still very nice clothing told him that this young girl had likely been taken very good care of.

"Whoever is missing you must be very upset," he told her. Only to himself did he add, 'If they aren't already dead.'

Pondering this thought, Ukon, in a gentle voice, asked the girl more questions. Where had she come from? What was her name? Where were her mommy and daddy? Did she have a brother or sister? When he received continued crying with no reply to any of his questions, Ukon thought that perhaps she was so traumatized that she simply couldn't answer. But then he wondered if she even knew how to speak. He hadn't once heard a 'mommy', 'daddy', 'bad man', or anything else that sounded remotely similar - nothing to tell him who she was or where she had come from. Instead he received terrified tears.

In an attempt to calm the distraught toddler, Ukon lightly bounced her in his arms and shushed her softly. In a quiet voice, he reassured her that he would help her, take her in, and protect her. After a few minutes, his efforts seemed to pay off. The young girl's crying turned back into whimpering, then sniffling, until finally her golden eyes began to disappear behind drooping eyelids.

His back turned slightly away from a nearby cluster of trees, Ukon hadn't noticed the pair of golden eyes which had been the entire time trained on the young girl and him. Had he seen, he might have inquired of the onlooker the events of the battle or of the young girl's background. Instead, completely unaware, he carried the sleeping young fox demon back up the river bank and off to the east towards his home and her new brothers. Like the mysterious golden eyes, Ukon didn't glimpse the flash of silver that darted away as soon as the toddler's safety had been assured.
