We've done similar things like this in past regions, so this probably doesn't need an introduction, but in case we get a couple of new members sometime soon who haven't played with us before -- this is the place for you to ask questions about Raafenhoek, and for me to answer them. Questions can be about anything, and I encourage everyone to start similar threads; it looks like all of us, except for Sobrazke and Gibet, are either playing with new nations or are using versions of our old nations that are somehow different than before. So please, feel free to ask anything you want. Your questions help me flesh out my nation's history. |

What is the democratic situation of Raafenhoek? Is it a strong democracy or a sham? Is there freedom of religion despite the existence of a national church? Are homosexuals free to live without discrimination? Is there marriage equality? How popular is recreational marijuana use? Is it legal? What are Raafenhoek's guns laws like? What is the common attitude towards guns? (Mod: moved. I realize the sections weren't very clear) Edited by Bastilla, Jan 28 2013, 09:07 AM.

Who is the de jure leader of Raafenhoek? The de facto one? What is the diplomatic status of both EA and WA in this case? In terms of foreign policy, does Raafenhoek take a more unilateral or multilateral approach? Is the stress behind hard power or human rights? |

1. The United Queendom of Raafenhoek prides itself on its political freedoms, though, in practice, colonial subjects enjoy fewer rights. All citizens in mainland Raafenhoek aged sixteen or older have the right to vote. The country's parliament currently consists of eleven parties, and there is little chance of one party gaining total power. This results in many parties forming coalition governments, which in turn increases a citizen's choice. The colonial territories, however, have fewer political freedoms. All citizens aged sixteen or older may vote, but they are generally restricted to voting only for local government. Citizens who opt to travel to mainland Raafenhoek during election time are allowed to vote for Prime Minister; in practice, however, most colonial citizens cannot afford to do this during each election. 2. Following the Raafenhoekker Reformation of 1859, the state church lost its seats in parliament. It currently is the national church in name only; the government stopped financing the church in 1908, and membership is now voluntary. While a good portion Raafenhoekkers still attend the Church of Raafenhoek, the nation grants its citizens freedom of religion, and there have been growing populations of Catholics and Muslims in recent years. In addition to this growth, more and more citizens have broken away from the church, and the population of atheists and agnostics is growing as well. 3. The government of Raafenhoek recognizes and allows same-sex marriages. Homosexuals may still face discrimination from fellow citizens, however. 4. Recreational marijuana use is legal in both private and public places, but individual business may choose to forbid its consumption in their buildings. 5. Raafenhoek holds a fairly loose policy on personal firearms. There is virtually no regulation in regards to common firearms, such as home defense-grade rifles, shotguns, and pistols. It is illegal to carry fully-automatic rifles in public, though it is no illegal to own them. "Destructive weapons" such as rockets, cannons, or explosives require a permit. 6. The Prime Minister is the de facto leader of the nation, and the queen is the de jure. 7. I'm not sure yet; that might be something we'll have to flesh out, since the two have changed. 8. Raafenhoek generally takes a more unilateral approach to foreign policy, choosing to stay out of the affairs of other countries except for extreme circumstances. It generally puts emphasis on soft power over hard power. |

How are the current relations between Miramont and Raafenhoek? What do the locals think of Miramonters? Do the locals dance in clogs and build windmills like nobody's business? How are the dykes holding up? If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me? |

1. Current relations between Miramont and Raafenhoek are likely pretty good. The government views Miramont as a nation whose interests are mostly in-line with their own; Miramont's socialist tendencies are viewed with a sense of skepticism, but this is hardly a huge issue. The Raafenhoeker government views its northern neighbor as a valued ally. The people of Raafenhoek view Miramonters as snobby and pretentious, but Miramonter culture is very popular in the country, especially in the fields of music and gastronomy. 2. While smoking huge bowls, yes. 3. They could be better, Lloyd. They could be a whole lot better. 4. Nah. If you want my body and you think I'm sexy, then come on sugar, let me know. |

1. 28,584,185. 2. Roughly 8.5%. 3. The government of Raafenhoek does not provide free education. The educational needs of the population are to be served by the free market. Families who struggle to find the funds to send their children to school are encouraged to apply for one of the many private grant programs throughout the country. University-level education is often paid in this way, through private grants and loans. 4. Historically, the government of Raafenhoek has consisted of many political parties. The parties in Parliament are as follows: De Tweede Raad (Upper House) : 150 Seats Governing Coalition: Freedom First Party (Anarcho-Capitalist) - 37Seats Objectivist Party (Randist) - 24 Seats Opposition Parties: Raafenhoekker Freedom Alliance (Right-wing populist, conservative liberalism) - 19 Seats Green Party (Green politics) - 14 Seats Labour Party (Social Democracy) - 14 Seats Lutheran Front (Pro-church, theocratic) - 12 Seats Queen's Party (Pro-royal, conservative) - 11 Seats Communist Party of Raafenhoek (Marxist) - 7 Seats Raven Union (Fascist) - 6 Seats Christian Purity Party (Anti-Islamic, Anti-Catholic) - 4 Seats Venerable Raafenhoekker's Party (Pensioner's interests) - 2 Seats De Eerste Raad (Lower House): 80 Seats Freedom First Party - 21 Seats Objectivist Party - 15 Seats Raafenhoekker Freedom Alliance - 10 Seats Lutheran Front - 8 Seats Labour Party - 7 Seats Green Party - 5 Seats Queen's Party - 5 Seats Raven Union - 4 Seats Communist Party of Raafenhoek - 3 Seats Christian Purity Party - 2 Seats 5. The Parliament of Raafenhoek consists of an Upper House and a Lower House. Edited by Ebatica, Apr 8 2013, 06:05 PM.

Do the locals smoke frequently? What is the daily mustache to baguette ratio? What kind of food and drink is popular in Raafenhoek? Do you think Raafenhoek's Raven Union is in cahoots with Miramont's New Sunrise party? Do your Marxists run around buggering sheep? (We really must do something about that here)

1. The average adult Raafenhoekker consumes roughly 830 cigarettes per year. 2. Something like 593:79,695. 3. Raafenhoek's traditional cuisine is rather simple, a custom that has persisted since the days when most citizens lived a rural lifestyle. A typical breakfast might consist of rye bread and eggs; on special occasions this might include cold cuts or sausage. For lunch, many Raafenhoekkers enjoy open-face sandwiches or salads, though eggs are also popular. Dinner generally consists of two courses, the first being bread and cheese, and the main course usually consisting of potatoes, sausage, stew, or fish, often with steamed vegetables on the side. Traditional desserts are yogurt and custard. Many Raafenhoekkers also enjoy a midday teatime, a leftover custom from centuries past. In the current market, Raafenhoek's cuisine has become far more diverse. Popular foreign foods include baguettes and skinny cigarettes, Amaterasan cuisine, and Vitian cuisine. As far as popular drinks go, milk has always been a dietary staple, as well as coffee and tea. Many Raafenhoekkers also enjoy beer (primarily pale ale and dark lager), and of the harder liquors, brandy and gin are the most popular. Wine is often only consumed on special occasions. 4. I would say there's a good possibility of that. It might be interesting to discuss. 5. Of course. What else do Marxists do? |
