Chapter 24

After some hours, the sun fell beyond the horizon. On the other side of Fef, the door to the Colonel’s room was knocked upon. Reaver hurriedly opened a drawer of his desk and dropped the papers and mechanism in there. “Who is it?”

“Lt. Colonel Gojira, sir.”

“Enter and lock.” Reaver ordered.

The door opened, and as the voice said, Gojira entered. He did as he was told, closed and locked the door. He walked up to Reaver’s desk and saluted, Reaver did the same. “Here to report on the current situation.”

“Go on, then.” Reaver lowered his arm, as did Gojira.

“The data has been replaced and destroyed. It’s fortunate that he managed to catch that certain officer off her guard.” Gojira smirked, “If not it’d have been a bit more difficult…”

“Good work.” Reaver nodded, “Although I don’t see the major deal…those villains are capable of fulfilling the requirements for Capital Punishment.”

“I am not sure if the General would’ve been that happy with it, with Marcus’s history and all.”

“Why hold onto the past. Marcus did his wrongs, and he should be punished for them.” Reaver sighed, “But what he’s doing now is much more than I had expected.”

“Hm?” Gojira raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”

“This.” Reaver grabbed the device out of his drawer, and showed the screen to Gojira. “Look familiar?”

“Hmn…” Gojira scratched his chin, then the identity of the man on screen came to him, “Oh! Wait, he was arrested here? What for?”

“The killing of Mask while in jail for public urination and attempt usage of prostitution.” Reaver answered, “What a crummy road to go down…”

“Indeed. But I wonder why none of the other veteran MP officers recognized him?”

“The only ones who really knew of his existence to the military are dead now.” Reaver said, tapping a pen on the side of his desk, “And our petty Ex-Colonel.”

“He knows?” Gojira looked a little surprised, “But the way he acted when Marcus spoke of Boons, as if he had never heard of them before…as if what Marcus was doing was insane. And wasn’t he just a Lieutenant Colonel back then or something?”

“Jaffar knows much more than he acts.” Reaver said, “He knows too much. Just like Marcus.”

“Well, considering their friendly relationship back then, if he were friends with Marcus, it’d be no surprise he knows a lot.”

“I want both Marcus and Jaffar in my grasp.” Reaver said, with a glimmer of bloodlust in his eye, “Either that or dead.”

“What about Zephyr and Bob? I’m sure they—“

“Kill them. Their continued existence isn’t helping us in any way.” Reaver scrolled down his miniature television, and frowned. “It’s been said that Mind Bomber has re-joined Marcus’s group. Unfortunately, he is not in Anti-Boon’s member base. Marcus must’ve done a good job and deleted his profile from the group immediately after his leave.”

“Mind Bomber? Not much of a threat as others.”

“Still on the radar.” Said Reaver, who glanced at the door. A shadow was covering the light at the tinted glass of it. When Reaver’s eyes met it, it quickly disappeared down the hallway. Gojira turned around to see what had gotten Reaver’s attention.

The Colonel stood up as the dashing of footsteps was heard going down the hallway. A fine line appeared between his brows, “After him.”

Gojira did just that. He was out of the room in an instant, slamming the now unlocked door against the wall as he made his exit. He looked down both sides of the hallway, which at the moment, was unoccupied. The hallway was where all the offices were of high-ranking officers in the military. It used to be occupied to Jaffar and the three Lieutenant Colonels, but in the present, only Gojira and Reaver had rooms there.

With it being a dead-end hallway to the left of Reaver’s room, there was no business for others to be there. Unless if someone wished to speak to the Colonel or Lieutenant Colonel, of course. Gojira ran down the hallway to enter another large main one. He quickly surveyed the area, which was full of military personnel.

No one looked like he or she was in a hurry, no one looked suspicious. Gojira cursed and kicked a wall.

Reaver was still in his office, picking up the phone and hitting the numbers for the Security room. Two rings, and Forgotten Blade picked up the phone in the Security booth, “Hello?”

“This is Colonel Reaver. I want to know who was in front of my office two minutes ago.”

“Yes, sir.”

After a minute of Forgotten Blade telling his partner to rewind a certain tape, the Security Officer replied, “Two minutes ago, you say, sir?”

“Yes, approximately.”

“Why, the only person to ever be by your office is Lieutenant Colonel Gojira himself, sir. And he exited the office.”

Reaver rolled his eyes, “The person before the Lt. Colonel. I ordered him to chase after someone in front of my room who had made chase.”

“Um…there is no one in front of your door while the Lieutenant Colonel is inside the office, sir.”

“Are you sure?” Reaver raised an eyebrow, as Gojira entered his office again, and closed the door.

“Absolutely, sir. I mean, the hallway is a little dark, but not dark enough that I can’t see nothing.”

“…must have been my imagination, then. Thank you.” Reaver hung up the phone, then looked up at Gojira.

“That sure as hell was not a figment of my imagination.” Reaver declared, “Gojira, were the lights a little dark out in the hallway?”

“For a bit, yes. But when I entered, the lights turned back on to their usual brightness level.” He shrugged, “Figured it was just a very minor power-outage.”

“That was the use of the Clock psynergy.” Reaver decided, quite strongly with the tone of his voice. He seemed very sure of himself. Gojira looked a little surprised from Reaver’s idea, “Cloak? Why, that’s a fairly high-leveled psynergic spell. Not even you know that one, sir.”

“But someone in this building does.” Reaver held the device in one hand, “And I’m gonna find out who.”

Reaver hit a few keys on the palm-sized machinery, and it began a query for adepts in the military who are capable of the spell, ‘Cloak’. While Reaver was beginning the search, Gojira watched with curiosity, “Hm. Even got the psynergic spells?”

“Yes.” Reaver answered simply, now finished with the search. The screen had a small window in the middle, saying, ERROR – ‘CLOAK’ WAS NOT FOUND.

Reaver was confounded. Did he spell it wrong? No. Was the psynergy-query broken?

He started another query with another psynergic spell.

1,721 RESULTS WERE FOUND WITH ‘MOVE’

He expected that, it was the psynergy spell required to pass the Private test in the military. “Hmn. Well, you usually report when you’ve learned a new psynergic spell, or a superior officer finds out and reports.” He bit his lip.

“I doubt anyone would see someone cast, ‘Cloak’, with them being invisible in the shadows and all.” Gojira supposed, “…what should we do, sir? Starting a search would seem suspicious and the chances someone would actually show their ability with the spell would have to be very dense.”

Reaver put the device back in his jacket and put two fingers to his lips, thinking. He huffed while staring at his small library of books on a bookshelf, “…there are only a few officers in the Military who would even think of listening in on my conversations.”

---
The Marcus group were all now inside the apartment room, soon after the glitch event from Bob’s long-lost pendant for tracking down the Valkyrie. Bob had done tests over Marcus. Blood tests, physical tests (Marcus giggled on those), urine tests, nearly everything. Nothing Bob found could make Marcus positive for being a Valkyrie. “It’s unusual for me to not know something about your little projects, Bobbito.” Marcus said, while sitting at the kitchen table, with a bandage covering a spot on his right arm that Bob had taken the blood sample from. He was sipping juice from a straw in a cup.

Bob shrugged, while walking into the bedroom, “There are lots of possibilities of what happened. The most likely one is that the pendant is broken.”

“As if Rusticious would visit me from the grave to deliver a broken Bob-Machine to me.” Zephyr rolled his eyes, “What are the other possibilities?”

“Well…they’re countless.” Bob said, raising his voice so he could be heard while conducting research inside the bedroom’s closet. “The pendant may have detected the amount of mana Marcus gained from killing so many boons, Marcus could’ve encountered the Valkyrie, Marcus could’ve encountered a boon that encountered the Valkyrie and survived, Marcus could be the Valkyrie even after all these tests; er, scratch that, I knew you before Project Valkyrie…Marcus could’ve eaten a Valkyrie, Marcus could’ve…”

“Ok, ok, I get the point.” Zephyr groaned while sitting on the couch, flipping through channels on the TV, “Either way, it’s getting us nowhere.”

“What are we waiting to do?” Bosco asked, sitting beside Zephyr.

“Mostly for our cover to go a little low, as impossible as that sounds.” Marcus grinned, “Right now we’re front-page stuff, we just gotta have a huge story pass us by and get us booted from the public eye’s number one subject of the day.”

“And that’s the weather for this week. Off to you, Dragon Sniper!” BwdYeti, the weatherman on TV said with a smile. Dragon Sniper, the TV News anchor, nodded, “Thanks, BwdYeti. And now, back onto our top news story. The Bounties for Jaffar Vejruc and the former Lieutenant Colonels of Fef’s military.”

Marcus spat out the juice that he was drinking, that was supposed to recover the blood sugar that he had given for a blood sample.

“That was fast.” Zephyr said while Marcus was wiping up his mess with a paper towel.

“Faster than’ a mongoose chasin’ a rattlesnake with his rear end on fire!” Mind Bomber said with a jaw wide open.

Zephyr looked over to the entrance to see the gunslinger leaning against the door, “Wait, was that supposed to make sense?”

“Lot of things I say don’t make sense to ya’ll, y’know that already, Zefy.”

“Yeah, and I never really missed it while you were gone.”

“And now we have Darkhero in the field with this report.” Dragon Sniper continued, and the screen switched to Darkhero standing in front of the Great Library in the cool night with a microphone to his mouth, “Thanks, Dragon Sniper. It was only a few hours ago when the Military released information that they were offering a bounty for the heads of former Colonel Jaffar Vejruc, and former Lieutenant Colonels Leon Enduro, Garet Vale, and Neo Floyd. The Military wishes for them to be alive and un-harmed. All four were dis-charged from the military a month ago for poor actions in a critical situation, as most of us already know.

Why has the military set out a bounty for these men? According to the report the Military had sent out, it is because of the incident that occurred at the Great Library right here, only last night. According to the report, Senator Psio was doing his routine check of the Library in the most secure rooms of the building without any bodyguards. He was reported to have a couple with him during the weeks when General Rock had attempted to be assassinated. But now, he walked alone.

He was ambushed by five men, four of which were the ex-officers. Surveillance and all security had suddenly malfunctioned during the ambush, so no tapes or any recordings are available. The fifth man was a man with tanned skin and a turban on, and many robes with different shades of gray and white. His face was never shown to the Senator, he covered most of it up with a scarf around his face.

The men had attempted to assassinate Senator, as they had tried to do to the General a couple weeks ago, they had claimed.”

“Yeah, about time they got that story straight. Why would I try to get one of my men to kill Rocky? The guy’s gonna die of old age anyway. I don’t believe him when he says he’s only in his late thirties…” Marcus laughed.

“The Turban man then had a scuffle with Jaffar, after they had beaten up the Senator. They got into a fight, and the Turban Man ran off……Jaffar followed suit with his men. Psio followed, and the rest is history. The Turban man and Jaffar fled the scene, but not after the Turban Man had injured four Military officers, one of which was in critical condition for a few hours.

Pendant Orez, a female Major in the Military and head of CSI, survived a head-on attack from the Turban Man. The others who have recovered are Lieutenant Bryars, Lieutenant Apocalypse, and Lieutenant Hystrix. They would not answer any of our questions.

There have been rumors that the four had joined the Warrior Guild, but when asked earlier today, the Warrior Guild’s leader and bartender, Greth, denied even getting an application from the former officers.

So now the military has another page to mark in its history in the past weeks. What an exciting beginning career Colonel Reaver is having, with four ex-officers on the top-wanted list. And who can forget, the escaped Anti-Boon leaders, Marcus and Zephyr? And with them, an ex military Private, Bosco, and a convict, BobTheTomato.”

“GOD-DAMMIT.” Zephyr smashed his fist on the coffee table before him, and grabbed the remote and turned the TV off, “Of COURSE they have to slide our names by at the end. The freakin’ end! Couldn’t have put it in the middle then molest it out of the story with Jaffar and others, but at the END. So now our names are lingering in everyone’s heads!”

“Lovely.” Marcus said with a light laugh, “But, that sure is suspicious. Remember the Turban Man we ran into at the Great Library?”

“What of him?” Bosco asked, “He sure is powerful if he was able to take on Lieutenant Bryars, Apocalypse, Hystrix, AND Major Pendant all at the same time after taking a duel with Colonel Jaffar.”

“No, not his skill, Bosco. Not his skill at all.” Marcus said, now in a raspy whisper.

“…I know what you mean.” Mind Bomber said, now in a serious tone.

“So you sensed it too?”

“Yup.”

“What?” Bosco was confused, “What about him?”

“He reeked of boon. The bastards are finally making their move.”

Chapter 25

Fef Military Base – Hospital Wing 0003 Hours

It was stormy outside in Fef, the first storm they’ve had in a while. Lightning smacked the flat, desert plains outside of the city. The Fef geography itself was closely congruent to Las Vegas, along with its temperature. However, Fef was not as dirty as Vegas is (as in naughty women population).

The rain started to pour, and it made a rat-a-tat-tat noise at the window of Pendant’s hospital room. She couldn’t hear it, however. She was sound asleep, and no longer dependent on the oxygen tank anymore, breathing on her own. She was blinking her eyes earlier too, with the power of Fef’s healing water adepts.

Of course, she was off the morphine. She probably got addicted. When she would wake up she may suddenly want her fix. Australia was just too attractive with all its cuddly and cute koalas.

The hospital wing’s visiting hours had passed, but despite that, Pendant still had one more visitor for the night. The door handle to her door twisted one way, making a clicking sound. It then opened slowly, creaking a bit as it made its way to the wall for it to be wide open. Pendant was no where alert enough to hear the squeaking noise, she was busy dreaming of Australia in the mind of a koala…even if she wasn’t on the morphine.

The visitor didn’t turn the lights on, and they would be turned-off anyway. A lightning bolt had hit the building, but the electricity had safely made its way down to the ground without starting a fire, thanks to the lightning rods and all that doo-da. The power however, had gone out. Somehow.

Pendant’s visitor entered, and reached into his jacket while staring at the patient, “You’re just too much trouble…”

The figure suddenly stopped, taking a deep breath.

Lightning struck somewhere near outside the base, and the room was lit up for a second from the brilliant lightning light. Hystrix had been next to the door, and drew his katana at the neck of the late visitor.

Hystrix quickly recognized who it was. He felt a little intimidated, but not much. The man wore a turban, and his face matched the one of the mysterious assailant the other night, even the same scarf was in the same position. The only difference here was that the Turban man was wearing a military jacket.

“How did you get in here.” Hystrix asked sternly, “There is camera supervision everywhere…the base is secured by trained personnel 24/7…including me. How’d you get in without being seen?”

The Turban Man stared at Hystrix silently, with one hand still in his jacket. Even though it was very dark, they could faintly see each other from the building lights of Fef, from Pendant’s window. “…why, don’t you know, Lieutenant Hystrix? You of all people should know that psynergy.” He wore a hidden smile.

Hystrix gasped a bit, but kept his guard up, along with the sword, “How’d you…?”

“You cannot hide anything from me. I am the will of God.”

“Oh, of course. I forgot that one part.” Hystrix pushed the blade a bit further, so that it was up tight against the scarf, at the neck. “I…still need to finish what we started the other night.”

“Funny. I believed I had won that round…” The Turban Man’s hidden smile was still worn, Hystrix figured.

Hystrix suddenly felt a chill behind him. “So, it was you.”

That wasn’t his voice. He slowly turned his head around, and shifted his eyes to view who was behind him as far as they could. When he connected with half the face, Hystrix’s face became very solid. His emotion was anger. His emotion was disappointment. His emotion was disloyalty, “Damn.”

Bang.

Pendant sat straight up, looking over at the window. She saw the massive storm outside, and the rain going rat-a-tat-tat on her window. “That was…a loud thunderbolt. Heh.” She gave a silent laugh, she was obviously capable of speaking now, and being conscious. The Ply formula that was being injected into her via a tube in her arm was definitely doing its job.

Another thunderbolt smashed a building of Fef, but it safely went down to the ground without a fire starting. The bright light flashed in the room, bright enough Pendant could see the reflection of the hospital room in the window.

She gasped from the amount of red she saw.

She spun around, and saw Hystrix laying on the floor, facing up at the ceiling. He had one arm clutching his stomach, which had a massive bullet wound. He couldn’t stop the bleeding, the blood was already all over the floor, and soaking his hair.

“HY, HYSTRIX!!” Pendant ripped the tubes that were attached to her apart, spewing Ply over her bed. She grabbed the tube and ran over to the fallen Lieutenant, and started to flow the Ply over him, like a hose. Hystrix coughed and shook his head, “Too…late…”

“Shut up! Don’t say that!” Pendant got down onto her knees, now in Hystrix’s blood. She didn’t care. She put as much Ply as she could over the wound, but it wouldn’t close up fast enough. The Lieutenant pulled his garb down, which was starting to get bloody from the blood he had coughed up. Hystrix coughed again with the red stuff coming out, “Pen……dant. Lis…en…”

“Wh, what? Don’t talk!”

“Noo…come……come here.” He waved a finger towards his mouth slowly. Pendant whimpered, but moved one ear towards his mouth. It was painful hearing him whisper weakly, “Colonel…Lt Colonel…they……they’re…ugh!” Hystrix gripped his wound tighter, with the Ply flowing over it, which wasn’t doing any good. He had lost too much blood.

“They’re what!? What!?”

“……boons.” Hystrix softly whispered. Pendant’s pupils shrunk, that was the last thing she’d expect to hear him say.

“Find Jaffar…you need…URGH!” Hystrix held the wound tighter, clutching his teeth.

Pendant grabbed his bloody hand away from the wound and held it with her own hand. He squeezed it tight, “It’s cold……really……cold…”

He then took a deep sigh, staring up into Pendant’s eyes. She started to cry, “No! Hystrix, y-you can’t…”

“I’m very……sorry.” He inhaled, then took a very deep exhale, exhaling the last of his life out of him. Pendant couldn’t believe her eyes. Hystrix’s weak eyes then closed, and he left a faded smile. Pendant shook her head and shook Hystrix as well, “NO!! Wake up, wake up!!”

He wouldn’t open his eyes. He never would. Pendant grabbed him and dug her face into his shoulder, “HYSTRIIIIIX!!!”

---/

“But NeoStrifeX, how exactly did this happen? Who did this?” Dragon Sniper asked a reporter in the field.

The reporter was in front of a cemetary entrance, where a ceremony was currently happening in the memory of Hystrix. It was the day after the next, in the afternoon. The funeral had happened quick, as did his death. His family and the entire military were lined up at the site, saying their prayers and so forth.

NeoStrifeX was shown in one corner of the screen, and a re-play of the parade in honor of the Lieutenant. The streets were lined up with people and military officers, all of the military saluting as the car carrying Hystrix’s body passed them by.

“Well, it happened two nights ago. Lieutenant Hystrix Miguel was found in Major Pendant Orez’s hospital room, dead with a bullet-wound to the torso and another in both the legs. When the Major found him, he had already lost too much blood to survive. Miss Pendant would not answer any of our questions, which is understandable as she goes through this tough time, as all the military. She herself says however, she is not sure who killed Hystrix.

“The CSI is getting to the case, as many as they have right now. They’ve been quite busy with many cases lately.”

“Yes…well, how…” Dragon Sniper continued, with all of Fef listening in.

Meanwhile, Bryars and Apocalypse were saluting at the grave, while Kamaitachi was playing the trumpet. Other sergeants and privates had loaded rifles, and fired up at the sky when Major Sentenal ordered.

Pendant stared at the grave, in misbelief even still. Apocalypse glanced at her, in pity. He’d ask her what to do later, he was sure Hystrix had left her a message of some sort before his death. He wouldn’t die without a word. He was too strong.

He then looked over at the city, and could see four figures standing atop a building. He continued to salute silently, while nodding slowly to the figures. He noticed Pendant was also staring in that direction.

The figures were the ex-officers, watching the funeral from afar. Leon had his head hung low, while Neo had a cigarette in his mouth. Again. Always.

Jaffar was saluting. Garet stared at his captain, bit his lip, and saluted too. Neo did it as well, and kicked Leon in the back of the leg, who stood straight up and did it also. Garet took a deep sigh, staring at the sad sight, “…death sucks.”
