Does art influence life?

My karma ran over your dogma.

An age-old argument, it can be argued both ways.

-Art is static, therefore it can't be influenced.
-Models and fasion can be counted as art, and people copy that.

Debate. Saying "they don't influence each other" or "they both do" isn't allowed, because it's unfair. ^^

Art influences cultural advancement, but life? Not necessarily.

As much as some would want to think, the media is the greatest environmental factor today. Kids under 12 don't swear often. Then you take the kids who watch MTV and South Park. They throw around swears like it's nothing.

Please keep Christian bashing to a minimum. This is mainly the American South (and mainly Evangelical death cults), which is similar to Afghanistan under the Taliban.

Touching.

Smartest post ever made.

Which is the parent's fault, by the way.

ARt influences life, hence what is currently labeled "gangsta rap".

Art influences perspective, which in turn influences our life as we know it.

K, thanks, I am just going to verbally warn you now. You were a problem child from day one, and you were told as much. That was a really stupid post. Pull that shit again and you can expect a warning.

He'll do anything for an excuse to put up that picture.

Art influences our thoughts, our ideas, and our opinions. Whether this influence translates into a tangible change depends on: a. The subject matter of the artwork itself, and b. Whether the affected person is one with a sense of reality, or some stupid kid who thinks he can be Superman after watching him on TV.
To summarize: Art influences life, but only on the mental level unless we allow it to progress farther.

I posted an image. Now, perhaps you need to see a dictionary definition to see why that relates to this topic.

Dictionary.com

im·age  Audio pronunciation of "image" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (mj)
n.

  1. A reproduction of the form of a person or object, especially a sculptured likeness.
  2. Physics. An optically formed duplicate, counterpart, or other representative reproduction of an object, especially an optical reproduction formed by a lens or mirror.
  3. One that closely or exactly resembles another; a double: He is the image of his uncle.
  4.
        1. The opinion or concept of something that is held by the public.
        2. The character projected to the public, as by a person or institution, especially as interpreted by the mass media.
  5. A personification of something specified: That child is the image of good health.
  6. A mental picture of something not real or present.
  7.
        1. A vivid description or representation.
        2. A figure of speech, especially a metaphor or simile.
        3. A concrete representation, as in art, literature, or music, that is expressive or evocative of something else: night as an image of death.
  8. Mathematics. A set of values of a function corresponding to a particular subset of a domain.
  9. Computer Science. An exact replica of the contents of a storage device, such as a hard disk, stored on a second storage device, such as a network server.
  10. Obsolete. An apparition.

Now that we've established that I posted an image, by the dictionary definition in bold and big, is art, I'll now state how that has to do with this topic. The debate this topic is about is "Does art influence life?". Now after the art I posted, I stated that I felt no desire to pull out a gun and shoot people in the head, which is clearly what is being depicted in the art. Thus, I was stating how art does NOT influence life. I thought that was an exceptionally easy to understand post, which answered the question, but apparently you're having problems understanding it.

Yah know what?

By definition, Omni is correct.

The post was kind of dumb for the debate board, so Sam is right there.

But let's drop it and not derail the topic. ;)

I think that Art does influence life. Art is what makes the world go round and makes understanding out of everything. Take the say "A picture is worth a thousand words" you can explain something and show life with art faster and more accurate with art. My life is based around art and it influences everything that I do. But I agree with the whole model thing many people take themselves after models that are considered living art. I think that if people would just sit around a paint or sing or write the world would be more peaceful. That is just what I think.

What you just said supports the conclusion that life influences art, not necessarily the other way around.
