I demand to know your real name or else I will send you to prison. (Such a long set-up, but it worked!) Any rate, it seems like it's just an extended version of our beloved Patriot Act. |

Though the intentions of this are most likely positive, I support ANY form of censorship under very few circumstances, and this is not one of them Really, I find this more disturbing because these idiots apparently don't realize that they have no capacity to enforce such a law. The sheer size of the internet and the fact that the law does dance dangerously close to violating our free speech rights render this law useless. Is this what we pay our taxes for? |

They can't enforce it. If you're not using your real name, how can they find you :o? |

Superbus could track down anyone with just an IP. And he's done it before. I kinda like the law. Will it rarely be enforced? Sure. Prostitution is only enforced when they're caught. They don't go out looking for prostitutes. Well they do, but not to arrest them. This works like it too. Some guy flames someone online, fails to recognize their internet prowess, and the guy is fined. Or put in jail. Whatever. It's the ultimate way for the elite to take down noobs since the virus was invented. |

Can they trace IP addresses? I'd explain my reaction to this, but it's been said a number of times already (For the record, I'm defintely against.) |

You see, there is no "Master Admin CP" for the entire internet. I doubt anyone besides a hacker could track down someone and pwn them. |

Your post changed my view off this completely. I suppose this law was used to save time in the long-run. When someone says, "WTF?! It's the f***ing internet. This is BS," someone can shove this right at their face. |

Keep in mind, the government will probably be able to take out a warrant on the guy via court order. The law only applies for blogs and message boards, where IP's can be obtained. |

It's not impossible to track down an IP without ACP. |

I've got a questionish thing. I'm well aware that Superbus and others can trace IPs, find out if someone is using the same IP, etc. But doesn't the IP address only tell you, in terms of IRL information, what ISP the person is using? As far as I've heard, the only way to use IP to find someone's address is to go to the ISP and convince them that they should give up the person's physical address and such. So is it possible for normal people to find out where a compy actually is based on IP address? Obviously, though, the government would be able to get info from the ISP because you'd be breaking the law. Though all that'd mean would be that everyone could make up a false sounding real name - like, everyone take the name Adam Smith online. You wouldn't have probable cause to arrest someone for using their false name if their alias is Adam Smith. heh. |

Just from a person's IP, you can get his ISP, and the LOCATION of where his ISP is; NOT always where the person lives. Also, some ISPs trace everything back to their central location (Comcast and AOL, for starters). When I get email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, etc., I employ alternate means. I won't go into details about that here. |
