Goku's sole purpose was to be the good-hearted fool that sacrifices his life to help others. Vegeta simply wanted to show Goku the light and defenitely showed an ample amount of rejection to being compared to a low-life saiyan such as Goku when he was the prince of a long line of super saiyans.
