Errr, right. Tsunade size rack = broken back + innability to move.

Plus it's kinda scary on a grown adult, but on a 13-year-old kid? *shudders*

Now let's see. Next chapter will be . . . Team 13.

Chapter 4

Dawn saw the new Team 13 already gathered at Training Field 13, awaiting their Jounin.

Dressed in his blue silk oriental tunic, Kam Yun sat, leaning against the trunk of a tree. His eyes were closed. Originally it had been in meditation, but sleep had quickly claimed him. He snored quietly.

Hamatatsu Katori sat on a nearby picnic table. She sat on the tabletop with her legs crossed in a ladylike fashion. She wore a long, blue kimono. Currently, she had her ankle-length black hair pulled over her shoulder and was brushing it - she was in the habit of keeping a brush in her item pouch.

Aoi Crysta sat cross-legged on the ground facing away from her to teammates. She wore a dark violet Genin body-suit with a scarf wrapped around her neck. The dark ensemble contrasted sharply with her pale, sharp features. She had a katana belted on one hip, and a circular chakram on the other. As usual, she wore a frown.

All three sat in silence.

“What a lively bunch we have.” The two waking Genin turned at the sound of their Jounin’s voice. Michael approached smiling pleasantly. Too pleasantly. He marched up to the sleeping Yun and knelt beside him. He then reached out an taped the Genin on the shoulder. There was a faint static pop as Michael used a tiny amount of Lightning Chakra in his touch. Yun jumped up with a yelp before looking around, startled.

“Raise and shine, sleeping beauty.”

Yun looked down to see his teacher, still smiling way too pleasantly. “Uh, s-sorry, Michael-sensei.”

“That’s alright,” Michael replied, standing. “Is everyone ready for your test today?” The three Genin all nodded. “Good.”

Michael strolled over to a wooden post, just over half his height. Once he reached the post, he turned back to the Genin. “Alright, ladies and gentlemen, today, your target is this.” The Jounin reached behind him and pulled out . . . an apple.

“Target?” Katori asked, curiously.

“What are we supposed to do with it?” Yun questioned.

“Well, anything, really,” Michael replied. He reached out and set the apple on top of the wooden post. “Your mission is to knock this apple off this post using any means at your disposal.”

“That’s it?” Crysta spoke up for the first time, looking both suspicious and disappointed. “We just have to knock the apple over?” Her teammates seemed equally confused.

“Well, yes,” Michael replied, still smiling. “The challenge comes in that I will be defending the apple and trying to prevent you from touching it. You have until the end of the day. Whichever of you knocks the apple off will pass. The other two I will decide pass or fail based on how well you preformed.”

“Wait!” Yun interrupted. “You mean that even if we manage to knock the apple off, only the one to actually do it is guaranteed to pass?”

“Correct.”

Crysta scowled. “How are you going to judge those two if I knock the apple off in the first minute?” Yun and Katori both shot her brief glares.

Michael chuckled. “That would be interesting,” he conceded. “Fortunately, you’re far too weak to manage that.” That comment earned him a chilling glare.

The Jounin walked back towards the log and apple. “You may use whatever tools you have and any Jutsus you know. Begin.”

The three Genin exchanged glances. Humphing, Crysta drew a kunai from her pouch and threw it towards the apple. It got all of five inches from her hand before it was intercepted by a kunai thrown by Michael, sending both knives flying back over the blond girl’s shoulder. Her eyes widened. His kunai had covered over 25 feet in less time than it had taken hers to travel five inches. Maybe this wouldn’t be so easy. Well, whatever. She was up for a challenge.

The three Genin all got into more ready positions. Crysta withdrew a fistful of kunai in one hand and her chakram in the other, Yun held two shuriken in each hand, and Katori held a kunia in each hand. They exchanged glances before launching all their projectiles in unison. Michael used his metal-plated gauntlets to deflect all the weapons in a blur of motion.

Even as the projectiles closed in on the Jounin, Crysta had rushed forward, drawing her katana and swinging it with one hand. After dealing with the projectiles, Michael blocked the serrated blade, again using his gauntlets. While swinging her sword in one hand, Crysta reached into her weapons pouch and withdrew a coiled whip. As she lashed out at the Jounin with her blade, she flicked the whip at the nearby apple. Her eyes widened in surprise, however, as Michael seemed to appear out of thin air in front of the whip, catching it in his hand. She was so startled that she didn’t think to drop the whip when the Jounin gave a swift tug, sending her tumbling towards him. Her movement was stopped, however, by the former ANBU’s knee planting itself in her gut. She cried out soundlessly in pain. She collapsed to the ground, dropping her sword and clutching her mid section.

“Oh, I forgot to mention. I hit back.”

Yun and Katori exchanged worried glances. Crystal grit her teeth and glared up at the Jounin. Steeling herself, she gripped her katana again and rose, swinging.

Michael caught the katana’s blade between his forefingers. “First lesson, ice princess. You are not a weapons expert. You are not an expert at anything. You are a novice.” This time, the pale girl was subjected to a judo throw, sending her back towards her teammates.

Michael folded his arms as he watched the girl raise again. She was very skilled for a fresh recruit, and she had great potential to grow. The problem was her attitude. She refused to acknowledge her teammates as well as her own weakness. Unless she got over herself and saw her own weakness, she would never reach her full potential.

Crysta seemed ready to try and charge again, but this time Yun beat her to the punch. He threw a set of kunai as he charged, before engaging in hand to hand combat with his instructor. He fought with a unique kung fu style, swinging and spinning his body around constantly. Michael parried the blows in time. During the fight, Crysta took the opportunity to lob another kunai at the apple. Michael caught it, spun, deflecting Yun’s strike, and threw the kunai back. The dance of fist and foot continued for a while, until Michael swept Yun’s legs out from under him, sending him to the ground. Michael smiled, however, as the falling Yun turned into a log in a puff of smoke. Good use of the Replacement Jutsu.

Up in a tree a ways away from his previous location, Yun readied a kunai to throw at the apple, but that idea was aborted as a shuriken embedded itself in the tree trunk on either side of his head. Apparently he had gotten away, but had not managed to remain hidden.

After that, Katori took her try, wielding a kunai in each hand. In response, Michael switched to the same style, drawing his own knives. The two clashed blades, weapons flashing back and forth. Periodically, Katori would throw one of her kunai at the apple, though Michael was always able to deflect the attack. After a while, Katori drew a smoke bomb and threw it on the ground. In the ensuing smokescreen, she attempted to make a dash for the apple, but a swift, unseen kick sent her flying back out of the smoke covered area. Bracing herself, she waited for the fumes to clear, but when they did, Michael was nowhere to be seen. Katori looked around trying to find her instructor, but to no avail.

Quite suddenly, Michael’s hand broke forth from the ground below Katori, grabbing the Genin’s ankle. A puff of smoke covered the area, and when it cleared; Michael was standing there normally, and Katori was buried in the ground up to her neck.

The fights continued throughout the morning. As the Genin became increasingly frustrated, they began to try attacking the apple while one of them distracted the Jounin. Sadly, even this technique constantly failed. Michael was just too fast. Eventually the Jounin called a break for lunch. The tired, battered, and bruised Genin tore into their meals. During the meal, the three began chattering in muted tones, even Crysta.

“We’re never going to get that stupid apple,” Katori muttered.

“He’s to fast,” Crysta grunted.

Yun nodded. “Even with you distracting him, we couldn’t get it. Same when I tried running the distraction.”

“So, how are we supposed to get the stupid thing?” Katori grumbled.

“We all go after him at once,” Crysta stated simply.

Yun nodded. “Maybe if he’s busy fighting all of us we can get a projectile off that he can’t stop.”

Shortly later, Michael called the Genin back to resume their exercise. Right from the start, all three charged the Jounin. Yun lashed out with hands and fists, Crysta struck out with her katana, and Katori used two kunai again. They concentrated on fighting for several minutes before making even an attempt at the apple. Katori drew more kunai, throwing a set of three at the apple. A single shuriken intercepted all three on an arcing path.

The fight continued on for several more hours. The Genin focused on attacks, periodically lashing out at the red fruit. Each time, Michael stopped their attempts. The Jounin smiled throughout the battle, though the Genin didn’t realize he was actually smiling at their teamwork.

After exchanging glances, the Genin launched a renewed attack. While Crysta and Katori lashed out with their blades, Yun pulled back slightly, spinning as he withdrew a scroll from his weapons pouch. He flung the scroll open, and in a puff of smoke it was replaced by a Kusarigama. Yun spun again, lashing out at Michael with the sickle in his right hand, and swinging the chained weight at the Jounin’s feet. Michael easily parried the blade and hopped the weight. Yun swung again; this time aiming the sickle at the jounin but the weight swinging out towards the apple. A kunai hit the weight, deflecting its path away from the apple.

Next Yun pulled back, tossing the sickle end of the kasurigama at Michael. The Jounin sidestepped the weapon, but it was caught by Crysta who pulled, lashing out with the blade and trying the catch Michael up in the chain. The Jounin grinned at their efforts. While Michael weaved his way around the chain and blades, Yun made a diving leap for the apple. That had the Jounin cringing, though he didn’t try to stop the inevitable.

Yun’s hands closed in on the apple . . . closer . . . closer . . . finally he reached his target.

His hands passed right through the fruit as if it wasn’t solid. The blue clad Genin did however manage to catch the wooden pole . . . with his face.

“Ouch,” Michael muttered quietly, while fending off the female Genins’ attacks. He quickly slipped out, disengaging. “Alright,” he declared. “That’s enough.”

The girls backed off. Yun managed to pull himself up to a sitting position, holding his face with his hand. “Mut duh mell?” he demanded.

“What happened, sensei?” Katori asked.

“I think I’ve seen enough,” Michael replied. “I have a pretty good idea of what you each need to work on; individually and together. I’m glad you realized that you had no chance at getting the apple without working together. That was your first lesson. Amongst shinobi, teamwork is absolutely essential.”

“First lesson?” Crysta demanded.

“So did we pass?” Katori added.

Michael smiled. “Of course. I hadn’t actually planned on failing any of you unless I determined you were beyond hope.”

Mut about mat?!” Yun cried, still holding his face and motioning towards the post with the apple on it.

“What? Oh, the apple?” Michael asked. “Oh, I ate that during lunch. That’s just a Genjutsu illusion.” He made a seal with one of his hands and the apple disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Yun gave his instructor an “Are you kidding me?” look. Michael just smiled. He then walked over and took the kasurigama from Crysta. “A weapon sealed in a scroll. Did you do that?”

Yun shook his head, climbing to his feet. “My fadder. He’s gud ad dat.”

Michael nodded. “I see.” He walked over and picked up the discarded scroll. Making a series of handseals, the weapon disappeared again and the Jounin rolled the scroll back up before handing it back to Yun. He then turned to address all three Genin. “Once we improve on your Ninjutsu skills some, we’ll work on sealing. It seems we have a weapons-heavy team here, so, Crysta and Yun, it will be essential for you to learn to store your weapons in a scroll. Carrying around a miniature armory is a major liability for a shinobi. Until then, don’t bother bringing your weapons to training or on D-ranked missions.”

“Yes, sensei,” the three Genin chorused.

Michael nodded. “Alright. Good work today. Meet back here tomorrow at 10. That’s it for today.”
