shield bash is wii exclusive from what I hear. Not the biggest deal in the world, but it's just one more incentive to get the Wii version.

guys, I have a huge list of spoilers for those of you who don't care. they follow.

[spoilers]By Dan Ryckert

Sunday, November 12, 2006

If you're looking to avoid spoilers, stay away from this article. I've posted some of this information on various message boards, and several people were upset about the story details I revealed. Threads were deleted, people got pissed, etc etc etc. So…I can’t make it any clearer…DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO AVOID SPOILERS.

Many people have told me that media outlets cannot post this information until Friday. Despite this, I specifically asked about embargoes with my Nintendo rep, and was given permission to “write and post away.” If Nintendo asks me to stop posting information, I will do so immediately.

My progress so far:

I’m four dungeons and 20 hours into it. In order, I’ve gone through a forest temple, Goron Mines (a fire temple on Death Mountain), Lakebed Cavern (water temple at the bottom of Lake Hylia), and Arbiter’s Grounds (sand temple with tons of midget skeletons, phantom rats, and bugs).

The boss of Goron Mines is the fire creature from the E3 demo and several trailers. Lakebed Cavern’s main foe is a tentacled swimming beast that resembles a Shadow of the Colossus boss fight. The best so far is the guardian of Arbiter’s Grounds.

He starts out in a giant sand pit, complete with skeleton soldiers protecting him. You have to ride the “spinner” item into his vertebrae and destroy his spinal column. After this, his head starts flying around and spitting fireballs at you as you ride along grooves in the wall and attack him.

I’ve received the Master Sword, the Hylian Shield, and the Zora’s Armor. This armor lets you swim underwater, but also makes you more vulnerable to fire and ice attacks.

The early parts of the story involve Twilight creeping over the land, causing its inhabitants to become terrified spirits. In this realm, Link becomes a wolf that is ridden by a strange creature named Midna. Flashbacks show Zant, the Twilight King, storming the castle. Later details reveal that Midna and Zant were formerly in the same tribe, but it’s not clear yet whether or not Midna is evil.

An extremely odd cutscene shows three Dark Links looking at the Twilight King’s armor while on top of a grassy hill. It then shows Link and his friend Ilia watching them. Ilia’s eyes then go completely white, and she clutches a knife. The next shot shows a sword hitting the ground, and then pans up to show Link’s eyes similarly “whited-out.” It then shows Link standing with two Shadow Links. This was probably the most creepy and surreal cutscene in Zelda history.

And now for the big spoiler that many Zelda fans have been waiting for. Ganondorf is most definitely in the game. I’ve only seen him in one cutscene so far, and he was chained to a giant rock by some ghostly figures. A sword was thrust through his chest, at which point he broke free and attacked one of them. After this, they banished him into a portal (which is most likely the Twilight Realm, but I don’t know for sure yet).

After that, I was told to find the missing pieces of the broken Twilight Mirror. One is hidden in snowy mountains, another in a grove, and another in “the heavens.” I assume these locations will be the fifth, sixth, and seventh dungeons. I believe the game is supposed to include nine dungeons, so there’s still a ton of gameplay to be found here.

Item-wise, I’ve received the Gale Boomerang, bombs, the slingshot, the bow and arrow, the iron boots, the Clawshot, and a great new tool called the Spinner. It looks like a top, and you can surf around on it over sandtraps, as well as follow along grooves in the wall.

I’ve still got quite a ways to go, and I’ll try to get a couple more updates in before the full review.

9:00pm Update:
Trying to run around collecting Rupees to repair a bridge. Also tracking a giant monster that steals fish near the Snowpeak area near Zora's Domain. Nothing too earth-shattering.

10:00pm Update:
Currently in Snowpeak Ruins. You get there via a little snowboarding minigame. You and a Yeti get on small ice boards and travel down a peak while fighting enemies. It's actually a really cool dungeon, and resembles an ornate mansion. Very different than almost any other dungeon in memory. It's filled with ice creatures and cannons that you have to maneuver to get from area to area. A couple of large Yetis live in the mansion, and the woman sends you to different areas of it. I just received the new Ball and Chain weapon. You swing it over your head, and point where you want to throw it with the Wiimote.

11:00pm: Snowpeak Ruins is a damn hard dungeon.

12:18am: FINALLY beat Snowpeak Ruins. The Yeti's wife sees herself in the mirror in her bedroom, and turns into a giant mass of ice. It bounces around the room, and you have to hit it with the ball and chain. After you smash it, she flies around with a bunch of ice pillars. These attack you, and you can destroy them in order to get a clear shot at her when she plunges down. You beat the boss, she returns to her normal form, and the Yeti husband comes in. He hugs her, a bunch of hearts fly out, and then the dungeon is over.

Also learned two new sword maneuvers: the Mortal Draw and the Jump Strike. The former is performed by sheathing your sword and approaching an enemy without Z-targetting. You then press the A button to deliver an unblockable and super powerful strike. The Jump Strike is done by charging the A button, then releasing it to perform a jump attack that can hit multiple enemies.

1:20am: Just crossed a gorge by holding on to a sparkly golden chicken. Seriously.
Now I'm in the Sacred Grove following a Skull Kid. The music from OoT's Lost Woods is playing in the background.

1:53am: In the sixth dungeon, the Temple of Time. The entrance appears to be the actual Temple of Time from OoT (complete with the excellent music and Master Sword room). Dungeon is high quality so far.

2:43am: I'm about 26 1/2 hours into the game, and am at the very end of the Temple of Time. I just need to find the Big Key and head to the boss. The dungeon item is a cool little gadget called the Dominion Rod. If you point it at statues and pull the B trigger, you assume control of them. They follow your every movement, and the huge statues with a hammer will completely crush enemies and gates for you. Pretty cool stuff.

3:40am: Beat the Temple of Time a while ago. The boss is called Armagohma, and is a huge spider just like Queen Gohma in OoT. You have to shoot an arrow into its eye when it's on the ceiling, and then take control of one of four giant statues. Once you take control of it, you have to slam their fist down using the Dominion Rod. After three sessions of this, the spider explodes and the eye bounces around with a bunch of little spider babies. It's just a matter of getting one more fist-slam in at this point.

Right now, I have to get to the last piece of the Twilight Mirror, which exists "in the heavens." I'm trying to jog Ilia's memory, and it seems like she has connections with the Hylian royal family (she'll probably end up being Zelda). I have to go repair this huge bridge now, and I should be skyward after that.

8:46am: And I’m back. Sorry about the downtime, we were having some site problems (we weren't "shut down" like some message boards theorized).

Well, after 17 straight hours of Twilight Princess, I’m pretty much in a state of delirium. I really need to go to bed, but I’ll post an update before I do.

There’s actually quite a bit of transition between the Temple of Time and the seventh dungeon (the City in the Sky). You have to find several books before you can gain access to the cannon used to blast you into the heavens. On top of that, you have to do a small fetchquest to obtain an item to jog Ilia's memory. Once you do all of this (it takes maybe an hour to an hour and a half), you can get the cannon repaired and head to the next temple.

I really wasn't a big fan of the City in the Sky. It features several floating sections with tons of fans that blast wind at you. Naturally, you have to use the iron boots a lot in this temple. The item is the Double Clawshot, which is actually a huge help. With it, you can dangle from the ceiling while simultaneously planning your next grappling point.

The boss fight is probably the most epic in the entire game so far. It's a huge hawk that you fight on top of a massive pillar in the sky. As if it weren't visually stunning enough, it also takes place during a thunderstorm. You have to Clawshot up to the top of a pillar, and then attach to the hawk's tail and equip the Iron Boots to make him crash to the ground. After you do this enough to destroy his armor, you have to Clawshot even further up, and then grapple onto his back and slash him in mid-air. It's really amazing to watch, and it's obvious that the makers of the game played a bit of Shadow of the Colossus in their spare time.

After defeating it, you'll acquire the last piece of the Twilight Mirror. After assembling it in the desert, the odd light sages show up and apologize for how they handled Ganondorf. The same portal they used to banish him appears before you:

You then see a brief cutscene with Zant (the Twilight King) and Midna. It's around here that you find out that Midna is actually the titular "Twilight Princess."

After this exchange, you actually enter the same portal that Ganondorf was sent through. You wind up in this eerie area:

It's called the Twilight Palace, and it appears to be the eighth dungeon. Haven't ventured too far inside, but there are many of the "twilight creatures" that have been seen as enemies before. However, they're not attacking you this time, they're just silent, motionless creatures. Interesting.

That's all for now, as I think I'm going to start hallucinating if I stay up any later. I'm planning on beating the game tonight (probably late), so keep an eye on this site for updates. I'll also do my best to answer your questions in the Comments section below. See you in a bit.
