I've failed to come up with something witty, so I hope you will enjoy this filler text instead.

When I played Melee with my friends, we (for some unknown reason) decided grabbing wasn't allowed, and eventually it almost felt like grabs didn't even exist.

Now it's carried over to Brawl. I don't use grabs at all, and I can't really shake it off. If I ever want to stand a chance against decent players, is this something I'll need to change? I'd really rather not. >_>

Grabs break shields, so yes, start grabbing. Grabs are also great for combos, and some of them have KO potential.

Yes it is something you'll need to change. It's really not that hard to decide when to grab. If someone hits your shield and they are in grabbing range, grab them.

Are you serious?

That's the very definition of scrub. Limiting yourself based on some self-made rules that don't exist in the game.

It's not like I want to do it anymore. But I've grown very, very accustomized to it over the past two years.

Hum~ I've done something similar to this in the past, but not this game. Ionno, maybe you should just fight some low level computers and start grabbing the fuck out of them so you get used to them (as long as you don't try to overdo throwing in the future)

without grab, your basically playing rock paper scissors without rock...your opponents can just spam scissors because they know you don't have a rock.

It's called an "honor rule." Sometimes they can be beneficial.

For example, in Halo 3, one method of practicing to proficiently use a sniper rifle without relying on its scope is to play a multiplayer game with the honor rule of not using the zoom scopes. After several of these, my aim with and without the scope using the rifle has vastly improved.

Limiting yourself in one area can force you to adapt to make up for it. However, it's a bad thing when it becomes habit like in HJ's post. :psypoke:

Honor is never beneficial in Brawl.

You obviously don't restrain yourself when playing competitively.

What I said is that limiting yourself to a single facet forces you to adapt and you become better at what you're practicing.

No.

It's just being a scrub.

You don't improve at all.

Those limiting conditions don't exist in competitive play.

Soja doesn't speak the truth. He speaks nonsense.

Grabbing in Smash is like last hitting in DotA.

There is never a reason to not last hit in DotA and there is never a reason to not grab in Smash when you know you can get the grab.
