Ingrid was walking through a forested strip of land in the southern part of Alexiera. She was travelling to the next town in hopes of finding work, though she doubted it. Small towns usually didn't have work to offer. So she was working her way to the coast to find a nice large port to find some employment. It was rough to find honest work these days, especially with the plagues and social strife in this part of Alexiera. But at least it kept things interesting. Working as a seamstress bored her more often than not. She was walking down a stretch of road when she felt a strange sensation. There was some rustling in the bushes, shadows darting back and forth in the brush and trees beyond... She was probably being followed. The woman can handle a bandit or two, but anything more was probably beyond her skill to defend herself. From the undergrowth emerged six men dressed in boiled leather armor, equipped with bows and long swords. It was obvious they weren't bandits due to the matching outfits. They were probably soldiers, but their markings and colors weren't familiar to her. "You'll be coming with us, thief. You'll return the goods you stole." Sneered the first soldier. Ingrid was in trouble. They were confusing her for someone else. "I'm no thief. I don't know who you men are." "Liar! We know it was you. There is no one else around here for miles. You'll return our goods and... pay us back for the trouble you've caused us." The soldier explained. The unsavory look in the soldier's eyes unnerved her. Ingrid was sure the payment he was thinking of had nothing to do with currency. She grimaced and slowly reached her hand to one of the pouches that stored her Shadow tome. This might not end well. "I can assure you that I'm no thief. I'm passing through. I don't know who you are or where you came from." She explained again, but the soldiers weren't listening. |

The desert nightmare was over, Embren had found her way back to a world of most welcomed foliage once again. The forest floor was even embedded in shrubs and plants, the smells of the forest alone brought her some comfort. With the return of the forest to her senses, so too did her sense for the hunt return, as she heard a commotion to the northwest not far away. Embren approached quietly, gathering what she could of the situation. From what she could tell there was a miss-understanding of some sort as five, six Narzgar soldiers were ganged up on a woman. In most lopsided encounters it was usually the outnumbered that was innocent, if not, well, she'd be evening the playing field anyway. The exiled Narzgarian went into a low crouch, approaching the exposed backside of the closest assailant, a bowman. She got closer and closer, so far avoiding detection, until she was just behind the preoccupied man. Lifting one arm towards the man's back collar she suddenly kicked the back of his needs and pulled down on the collar. In an instant the soldier was on his back and winded. Without pause she dropped a bony elbow on his Adam's apple, shutting him up for the time being. Knowing that the sudden drop of a comrade would give her away soon enough, the former soldier dove behind a bush and extracted her curved blade and parrying dagger, waiting for the right moment to proceed. |

The men were definitely making up an excuse to abduct Ingrid, for they weren't the only humans around for miles. Taking the southern route circumventing the mountains from Kelvendar over Former Alexiera was not a strategic decision on Kyril's part. He needed time to think, and riding in solitude helped to focus his thoughts oftentimes when he was at difficult junctures, mentally. He had left the deserts of Kelvendar behind some time ago, and he was now surrounded by the greenery and foliage of Alexiera's foothills. He had not seen another individual for some days now. So imagine his surprise when he heard voices, agitated, on the wind. Turning his head, curiosity struck him, and he dismounted his horse and took a brisk, crouched walk towards the source of the voices. It sounded like a confrontation. Readying his bow was more a matter of instinct now than it was a conscious decision. Leaning out from behind the tree he was sheltering behind, he took inventory of the agitators. He counted several men, uniformly dressed. His eyes narrowed—Narzgar soldiers. And betwixt them was a young woman, the center of their harassment. He knew what to do. Whipping an arrow to his bowstring, he stepped out from his shelter and took a rigid stance. Loosing at the moment of release, his arrow let fly from his personally-wrought bow towards the back of the nearest man's knee. Still tens of yards from the circle itself, his shot was no less true. |

Ingrid was just as surprised as the soldiers when one of the men closer to the side of the path was suddenly knocked down, knocked out, and sucked into a bush. Another one let out a cry of pain as an arrow crippled him. The five soldiers didn't take their time to recover, they knew they were under attack and had to avoid further casualties. "Take cover!" One cried. The four others did as told and rushed for cover of the brush and trees to lower the chances of them being arrowed. The crippled one dragged himself into the brush, his usefulness was waning. Two converged on the spot where Embren was hiding. She wasn't so obvious before, but now that she was being searched for by the soldiers (whom were used to forest battles), no such luck in hiding anymore. They drew their swords and moved in to deal with the attacker. Both simply stabbed at the bush the either injure her or force her out of hiding. The wounded soldier staggered for shelter and began searching for the enemy. One of the other healthy soldiers pulled out his bow in order to return fire on the hidden enemy once they spotted him. The last one bolted to snag Ingrid before heading for the brush. Ingrid recovered, however it was almost too late. The soldier rushing her was almost upon her. She tugged out her dark tome and invoked the dark power in the book. Black energy leaked from the ground and enveloped the charging soldier. Once the black crackling energy vanished, it left a mortally wounded man stumbling to the ground. His clothes were trashed and his flesh was riddled with a wide variety of open wounds, sores, and rot. She staggered back as he nearly toppled onto her. She was stunned by the sudden assault her mind was left blank as to what to do next. Edited by Blank, Dec 24 2008, 04:46 AM.

No sooner than she was settled in her new hiding spot Embren saw one of the other soldiers get shot by an arrow. So she wasn't alone in this conflict resolution, good to know. Not given the time to wonder about it more, she found herself being approached by two of the four still in good condition. From her hiding bush, they stabbed it to force her out, their mistake. Using the body of the soldier she had knocked out as a shield, the two soldiers found themselves stabbing their ally's torso, the new source of pain awakened then now grievously injured man who promptly let out a yell of pain. Quick to make advantage of any shock or surprise garnered by their mistake, Embren slipped out from under her makeshift shield with uncanny speed and lunged for the stomach of the soldier on her right with her sword. She was running out of tricks but hopefully the numbers would even out with this move. Edited by Psiwri, Dec 24 2008, 12:41 PM.

Kyril wasn't shooting to kill, otherwise the conflict might have been resolved by now. He intended to capture at least one of the Narzgarian soldiers to inquire further as to what they were doing, accosting a lone woman, in Kelvendarian lands. Before his arrow struck the man he fired at, he returned to his shelter behind the tree to string another arrow to his bow. He leaned out from behind the great trunk and observed, curiously, as a couple of the men began to stab at some foliage. Is someone else attacking them? Just as well. It only made Kyril more intrigued about the matter in its entirety. Stepping out again, Kyril loosed another arrow at the right thigh of one of the soldiers stabbing at the shrub, trying not to look surprised when a young woman lunged out at his partner with a blade brandished. |

Such was the cost of war, no matter. The men stepped back and parried the blow, expecting something like this. After deflecting the blow, he slashed at her As Kyril ducked out from his cover and let loose an arrow, he'd find himself being shot at in return. One soldier peeked out from across the path and shot an arrow at Kyril's exposed body. Ingrid made headway for the cover of the trees and away from her attacker. She stood there for a moment considering her situation. Whoever it was that was attacking the soldiers couldn't be worse than her initial company. Also according to her count, there were only two attackers and now far fewer able soldiers. She once again invoked her Shadow tome's power and nearly murdered the man who fired at Kyril, leaving him with grisly wounds. |

No good! Embren's attack was parried as the soldier made a counter attack of his own at her stomach in turn. She lifted her parrying dagger to block the blow, but had no luck getting his blade stuck in one of the notches. Lucky it was that the other soldier took an arrow and had to pull back before aiding his friend in attacking her. Jumping back to create some distance between her and the soldier, she readied her weapons once again, this time waiting for the enemy to move first instead, banking on her reflexes and speed to take advantage of whatever attack he might present to her. |

Kyril stepped back just enough for the arrow heading towards him to zip by, thankfully the only sting of it being the buzz in his ear from the sound of it going by. In the same motion, Kyril pressed himself back against his tree, sheltered behind it. He could have lunged out and fired another shot, but he had been spotted and it would probably be a novice's mistake. So he called out to them instead. "Let the woman go and the rest of you can leave unharmed! Whatever business you have in Alexiera, it will not end well for you if you continue!" So he shouted. Their response would dictate what Kyril did next. |

The one crippled soldier with the bowman pulled out his bow and let an arrow fly in her direction. She ducked back behind the tree to narrowly miss death by arrow. Ingrid was becoming a threat rather than a play thing now. The shaman decided to stay behind the tree next time. Three down, three left. Two of which were crippled by Kyril. The crippled archer knocked an arrow and peeked back around to wait for Kyril. Didn't seem like they were going to give up so easly. The man engaged with Embren broke off and circled around a tree quickly and took off. Partly to avoid Embren, partly to avoid Kyril, mostly to get away. He didn't want to end up like his friends. That next move was unexpected in that her proclaimed adversary called his own retreat. The next thing Embren knew there was a sharp pain in her leg, looking down there turned out to be a knife stuck in by the injured soldier still near her. In a fierce reaction she sent a solid kick into the man's stomach with her good leg, gritting the pain of putting her weight on her new injury. She stumbled back and down the ground, and began to carefully remove the knife. Just what she needed, finally got out of the desert only to get crippled. |

Kyril didn't have many options, and his demeanor showed this as it became stern when he received no reply from the attackers. Now he had to run them off; no foreign legion attacks a bystander in sovereign lands and goes unpunished. Kyril moved in a flash towards the next tree, springing out from his shelter like a spooked rabbit, and nearly as fast. He would probably be behind the next nearest tree before the soldier pointing an arrow at him could lead his shot, and that's if he was seen clearly through the foliage. |

Fortunately, the man let go when kicked rather than hanging on to the knife. He crumpled back onto the ground. The soldier grit his teeth and struggled to get back on his feet and get his sword to press the attack. The other soldier let an arrow fly, even though Kyril was moving too fast to hit for the moment. The arrow was lost to the undergrowth of the forest, but he quickly knocked another and lay in wait for Kyril. |

A small splash of blood gushed out as the knife was extricated from it's fleshy sheath, Embren took a look at her enemy, he was on the rise with a sword almost to the ready. She too, got back to her feet quickly as she could, bloodied knife still in her right hand she muttered a single word quietly, "Yours." The knife was then thrown towards the man. Then her two blades were prepared yet again as she made a dash towards him, ready to strike whether the knife hit him or not. |

Kyril was unused to forests as cover; he was more accustomed to being on the wide, flat desert, where cover was scarce and speed was emphasized over stealth. Still, any vocation involving hunting practically calls for stealthiness, and so despite his inexperience with the environment, Kyril was still fairly good at remaining hidden. Instead of running out from the tree like he did the last one, he stored his bow and got low on his elbows and knees. This way, he began to prowl through the undergrowth as he slowly made his way around the circle of conflict, hopefully to the last bowman's aft. The noise from Embren and her opponent easily masked any quiet shuffling he made on the forest floor. Edited by Soja, Dec 28 2008, 08:32 PM.
