The Train Conductor to Hell

In the beginning of time when the sun and the moon were closer then they are now, when the sky was more violet then blue, and the breeze constantly carried the smell of honey… A creator race installed a system of obelisks installed all over the planet. The purpose of the obelisks are now lost in time. The obelisks served a very important cause. They generated a constant, and extremely large, amount of magical energy whose purpose was to bind and incapacitate a being of inexplicable evil. The creature’s name was Jharel’kal. The obelisks kept the creature locked in place at the center of the world. But a creature such as Jharel’kal could not be so easily contained. The fields had to be constantly monitored. The Inventors, the race of beings who imprisoned Jharel’kal and built his prison, were dying out. They knew they only had a matter of time before they faced extinction so they went to build their masterpiece invention. It took several decades but their masterpiece was finally finished. They called it the Island of Life. The purpose of the Island was simply to create and foster life and then accelerate the natural evolutionary pace of the beings created… For the Inventors were the sole intelligent creatures left on the world, all other races were slain in the war to contain the Great Evil, and they did not want Jharel’kal to escape his prison and wreak havoc across any world he could find. The Island would create many life forms to follow in the Inventors footsteps. The Island went to work immediately. The few remaining Inventors were content to wait until their Scions were evolved to the right point… Though the Island sped up the natural pace of evolution, it did not speed it up fast enough. The Inventors died centuries before their Scions evolved to the right point. And during the flow of time, the location of the Island faded into legend, and nobody could find it… As no one could remember it. All except Jharel’kal. Though he was locked away in the core of the world, he still knew much of what was going on above him. All he had to do was wait for the fields of magic to begin weakening, and then he could use the Inventors very last piece of work to destroy not only the planet he was bound to, but also planets beyond count. The Island would create a legion of creatures that would be bound to him. Creatures that would be utterly loyal to his cause of destruction… Now hundreds of thousands of years after the last of the Inventors passed away, the Obelisks, one by one, are beginning to darken. What this means for the many races that call the world their home is uncertain. __ Races: Kirtonians: The Kirtonians were the fastest creatures to evolve from the Island. But something went wrong in their creation, the Inventors speculated the magical fields drifted too closely to the Island’s creation process and tainted the lifeforms with animal life, for they resembled animals more then human. They are an elegant mélange of bestial and human characteristics. But the Inventors were arrogant, they thought that if these creatures could evolve so fast, so could a more desirable Scion, and refused to pass on their duties to the Kirtonians. The Kirtonians live in tribes designated by their dominant animalistic trait. The largest tribes are the Drakes, Ursan, and the Hornets. Dozens of smaller tribes exist as well. Their life span is four hundred years. Territory: Stromlen, Baskile, Numren, Irelom Belegrine: Sixteen years after the last of the Inventors passed away, the Belegrine came into being. They were more humanoid then the Kirtonians, but there were still some defects… The case for the Belegrine was that they were composed of living stone and fire. When they came off of the Island and into the world they immediately came into conflict with the Kirtonians. The war between them lasted decades, with neither side winning. In the end their leaders signed a treaty. The Belegrine and the Kirtonians would cease fighting for several thousand years, build their kingdoms and consolidate their forces, then once certain portents and omens showed, they would go back to war… And it would be a war to the death. The Belegrine are lead by High Thane Kraulen. They are made of hundreds of nomadic bands. Their life span is estimated to be five hundred and sixty years. It cannot be verified though, as the Belegrine protect their culture fiercely. Territory: Olenar, Ignia, and Lenthi The Nadrigan: The only race of beings not created on the Island. They came into being as the Inventors labored on the Island. They watched from the shadows and kept their creation a secret from them. They were direct offspring from the magical fields surrounding the world. And as such were gifted with a wide array of power. They are masters of the arcane and with it they can do nearly anything… The one thing they could not do was create other life forms… They soon found that the power to create life was the Island’s power, and the Island’s power alone. They call themselves the Protectors of Life. For if they cannot create life, they could at the very least protect it… Though they did not know the purpose of the Obelisks, they watched over them nonetheless. The Nadrigan lifespan unknown. The leadership of this mysterious people is given to a single King. Human: The last race to be borne from the Island… And ironically the race of Scions the Inventors were waiting for. But by the time they evolved, the Inventors were long dead. They are seen by most of the other races as chaotic, or dangerous, and sometimes more than a little insane. Only the Nadrigan seem to have a positive outlook on the Humans. They see them as the second generation of the Inventors. The Kirtonians look down on the Humans, for they see the resemblance between them and the Inventors, and they remember the Inventors and how they refused to pass on their secrets to them. Humans have forged several empires for themselves, mostly from lands they have taken from the Kirtonians and Belegrine. Unlike the other races on the planet, they have considerable conflict with each other. They have no real knowledge of the Inventors, or their noble heritage. Empires: Hakkein, Leandri, Jend, Paendren The map: ![]() |
