Organizations such as the Hispanic Institute, Dolores Huerta Foundation, Media Matters, NCLR, National Hispanic Media Coallition, the NDN, SPLC, and the LCLAA care very much so.

hahaha Lou Dobbs was the only guy willing to give the issue of illegal immigration a critical look. everyone else is either apathetic or "look at all the poor Mexicans let's give them free healthcare =(((((((("

as a "minority," I couldn't give a shit less if they kept him on or not. I don't agree with people who think that he should've lost his job sooner because they didn't agree with his views. you read me, Huffington Post?

And by a "critical look" you mean he, among other accusations, tried to insinuate Mexicans had a plan known as the "reconquista" to reclaim the United States Southwest? I can understand a critical look of immigration issues, but I can't call bigotry a "critical look" by any definition of the word.

you've apparently never been petitioned by "La Raza" about the reconquista.

i have.

it exists/ted. the way that illegal immigrants have been flocking back to their home states, though, I doubt the organization for such a plan remains in the present time. I don't know now since our contact with that element of the community has been cut for a couple of years now.

And it's also such an incredibly small portion of people who are involved in these groups that it's wrong to apply the notion across an entire culture - oddly reminiscent of a stereotype in the way it's applied to all immigrants. Scale matters.

For this case, no, it doesn't. Of course the plan was unfeasible and laughable, but the sentiments ARE there. There ARE many Mexicans who feel like the American Southwest was stolen from Mexico, and they DO feel like they are entitled to its reacquisition. This grumbling has been going on in Mexico ever since the acquisition of California happened. Hell, some of the reconquista advocates suggested simply to do it passively by moving their culture north and simply forcing out the "occupiers" by displacement.

It's no more organized than the KKK or Black Panthers are nowadays, but do they exist? Yes. So then it's not possible to say that it was just mean old racist Lou Dobbs shooting off his mouth about them damn Mexicans taking all our janitor jobs.

Remind me why the scale doesn't matter. The issue isn't that Lou Dobbs reported these sentiments (which would otherwise be admirable reporting), it's that he reported these sentiments as widespread while generating unnecessary fear. Some proof (with my emphasis in bold):

DOBBS: There are some Mexican citizens and some Mexican- Americans who want to see California, New Mexico and other parts of the Southwestern United States given over to Mexico. These groups call it the reconquista, Spanish for reconquest. And they view the millions of Mexican illegal aliens in particular entering the United States as potentially an army of invaders to achieve that takeover.

Christine Romans reports.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CHRISTINE ROMANS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice over): In San Diego today, another sea of Mexican flags echoing the nationalist theme in protests earlier this week.

UNIDENTIFIED GROUP: (SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE)

ROMANS: Chants celebrating La Raza, the race, and signs proclaiming the true history of the Southwest. A Southwest they say still belongs to Mexico.

Long downplayed as a theory of the radical ethnic fringe, the la reconquista, the reconquest, the reclamation, the return, it's resonating with some on the streets. It's the idea that the Southwest United States is stolen land called Aztlan.

LARRY BIRNS, COUNCIL ON HEMISPHERIC AFFAIRS: These places that these Mexican immigrants want to go, Arizona, New Mexico, California and Texas, were all parts of Mexican territory in the 19th century and were swiped from Mexico.

ROMANS: A surprisingly common theme among open borders advocates, even some Spanish language media. This billboard last year declaring Los Angeles a part of Mexico, not California.

California Congressman Dana Rohrbacher calls the attitude arrogant and dangerous.

REP. DANA ROHRBACHER (R), CALIFORNIA: And now we see that hundreds of thousands of these people, if not several million, are willing to wave the Mexican flag and not seek assimilation in the United States, but are instead declaring their allegiance to Mexico while here illegally. This can cause huge problems. If only a fringe element of them want to commit acts of violence in the future to -- in order to push their claim of legitimacy in terms of their right to this area that we now occupy in the United States, it can cause great damage and loss of life in our country. ROMANS: Perhaps why this California police officer this week encouraged these protesters to fly the American flag.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: What you should be flying are American flags, and I'll tell you what else.

UNIDENTIFIED GROUP: No!

(END VIDEOTAPE)

You're not going to convince me that Lou Dobbs is simply "reporting the facts" when he dismisses the truth about the reconquista being a fringe movement, only to further his incorrect analysis by insisting the reconquista is a widespread belief. Dobbs ices the cake when he generates irrational fear by insisting that a small number of radicals will cause widespread damage in the United States. Perhaps it's also notable to add that Lou Dobbs attempted to connect then-president Vincente Fox with the reconquista movement - flat out bullshit.

Sorry to slander Old Man Dobbs for being honest...

El Presidente was incredibly lax when it came to enforcing immigration standards as supposedly agreed to during talks with the US at the time. That he was often slighted by Lou Dobbs as an accomplice in encouraging the flow of illegal immigrants to the United States, turning a blind eye to the activities of coyotes [coh-yoh-tez]—basically human smuggling convoys—isn't surprising.

And do you not have any reading comprehension, or did you simply skim the transcript in the hurry to somehow prove me wrong?

Who else BUT among the Mex-American open-border advocates would the theme be 'surprisingly common' amongst? I don't see that it's a 'surprisingly common theme among MEXICAN people,' do you? That is, after all, what you're attempting to say Lou Dobbs said. And what he said, EXACTLY, was that there are SOME Mexican citizens and SOME Mexican-Americans who believe in La Reconquista as a noble goal, or, at the very least, a pipe dream.

Hell, the only alarmist rambling, the sort that you thought came from the journalist on topic, comes from a Representative.

But you're not going to be convinced, as you said. You've already dug your heels in. :) So whatever. Take a trip to Guadalajara or Mexico City, ask a bunch of people if they think that California should belong to Mexico, then come back and let me know what they said. :tom:
