All salt does is lower the temperature of the ice's freezing. Meaning that if you don't do it as the suns getting hotter, then the night will come and there will still be the same amount of snow since the temperature would drop as well. Unless you do it early in the morning, or you use a considerable amount of salt, you won't get much.

But you're not using salt to prevent snow from forming, you're using it to prevent ice from forming.
