In this thread, I'm going to be counting down the 100 most critically acclaimed video games of the current decade (2000-2009). I've shown some people the full list prior to this, so if you guys could avoid spoiling it for everyone else I would appreciate it.

I'm going to list 9 games every day until we've reached game #1 on Dec. 31st. Keep in mind that bundles (such as The Orange Box), expansion packs, and ports of games released before 2000 have been omitted.

#100: Rachet And Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Posted Image
Release Date: November 2, 2004
Platform: Playstation 2
Developer: Insomniac Games

"Up Your Arsenal is a phenomenal game and a great addition to the Ratchet and Clank franchise. With an expanded number of weapons, a humorous plotline and a tribute to side scrolling platformers, Up Your Arsenal is impressive as a single player game. However, it’s the inclusion of a fully fleshed out multiplayer mode that truly sets this title apart from many of the other PS2 titles this year. Go out and blow up your friends this holiday season, thanks to Insomniac." ~Game Over

#99: Final Fantasy X
Posted Image
Release Date: December 20, 2001
Platform: Playstation 2
Developer: Square Enix

"The delivery is head and shoulders above any other console RPG, and the overall experience leaves you with such a feeling of satisfaction that it's easy to dive right back into the game once you beaten it just to experience all the big moments again." ~TotalPlaystation

#98 and #97: The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons/Oracle of Ages
Posted ImagePosted Image
Release Date: May 14, 2001
Platform: Game Boy Color
Developers: Capcom, Nintendo

"Although Zelda might seem to be wearing thin over the years, and even though the GameBoy Color is fading into the mists of time, Oracle Of Seasons [and Ages] is a fantastic game that is packed to the brim with fun and adventure. Any Zelda fan, or any action RPG lover should thoroughly enjoy the game." ~RPGamer

#96: Super Mario Sunshine
Posted Image
Release Date: August 26, 2002
Platform: Nintendo Gamecube
Developer: Nintendo

"This game is simply wonderful. If you have been a fan of Mario for a long time there is no reason to not buy this game. It may not be as innovative as Mario 64, although I would argue the waterpack alone makes it innovative, but it is a challenging game. There are stages that will make you want to pull your hair out to continue in certain areas. This game has vast playability. If you really want to push yourself, go for all 120 shines or you can just go for the minimum and beat the game. This is what makes a game like this great, the playability and the overall fun factor. The graphics may not be the best, but this game is still pure gold." ~Gaming Trend

#95: Call Of Duty
Posted Image
Release Date: October 23, 2003
Platform: Windows (2003), Xbox 360, Playstation 3 (2009)
Developer: Infinity Ward

"Call of Duty is the most realistic war games I have ever played. Not only are the graphics stunning, the sound effects, music, dependence on teammates, weapons, and the overall feel of the game is amazing. In a war that changed everything you get the chance to partake in some of the most epic battles that took place throughout the European front. What really makes the game great is the fierce intensity. It just adds such a realistic touch that for a moment or two you might actually be able to picture what the men of "The Greatest Generation" were put through." ~PC Gaming

#94: Timesplitters 2
Posted Image
Release Date: October 9, 2002
Platforms: Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox
Developer: Eidos

"While Free Radical is still quite young as an individual development house, it's already earned itself quite a reputation. Or rather, the team's history precedes it with a resonance and power few newbie developers could ask for, or for that matter, warrant. TimeSplitters 2 is the team's best effort of two titles, and it shows off its ability to create a finely tuned, highly customizable, intensely exciting first-person console shooter." ~IGN

#93: Mario And Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story
Posted Image
Release Date: September 14, 2009
Platform: Nintendo DS
Developer: Nintendo

"...the latest Mario & Luigi is quite simply the best Mario RPG to date -- and I say this as an ardent fan of Paper Mario. All the elements gel perfectly here: The characters, the combat, the game flow, the dialogue. More than that, this is a game that revels in simply being a game. It celebrates the best parts of both role-playing and Mario games while mercilessly lampooning their worst habits. It's absolutely brimming with exuberance." ~1UP

#92: Shadow Of The Colossus
Posted Image
Release Date: October 18, 2005
Platform: Playstation 2
Developer: Team Ico

"'Shadow of the Colossus' succeeds not through the layers of complexity, hand-jamming combos or by show-off pyrotechnics and unfathomable, forgettable plot-lines. It’s a masterfully understated, beautifully simple, engrossing ride that's as palpitatingly thrilling as it is serenely calming. It's also one of the most consistently compelling and memorable games we've ever played (or witnessed, for that matter). Once you've finished it, you'll sit back and flick through the stand-out memories lodged forever in your mind's eye." ~Eurogamer

There is a light that never goes out...

Is this a rankings based on your personal opinion on the most "critically acclaimed games"?

I think Call of Duty and FF10 are wayyy too low. I mean, since we are talking about games in this last decade, there is no reason they shouldn't be in the top 50, at least. Actually, same thing goes for Mario Sunshine, and especially Shadow of the Colloseus, that was really good game.

I would think that he's going off ofa different list since he's quoting reviewers but he could just be using other peoples quotes to back up his opinion so it go both ways really. I gotta agree that ff10 seems kinda low

K, then how are the rankings determined? Are you like, averaging the overall score they received from magazines and websites?

The better a game is reviewed, the higher it is on the list.

With a few exceptions, but nothing no one would disagree with. My personal opinion doesn't influence anything on the list.

Anyway...

#91: Rome: Total War
Posted Image
Release Date: September 22, 2004
Platform: PC
Developer: Activision

"Discounting those with short attention spans, any gamers with an interest in the strategy genre owe it to themselves to buy, beg or borrow this game. I'd honestly suggest you steal it if none of those other options seem to work for you but in these days of hasty litigation, I had better refrain from actually encouraging anyone to commit a crime to get hold of this game. Still, with a game this good, it'd be a crime not to play it." ~IGN

#90: Pro Evolution Soccer
Posted Image
Release Date: November 23, 2001
Platform: Playstation, Playstation 2

"Neither EA or Konami achieved what Acclaim did with the N64, yet Konami's latest results on the PS2 resemble the gap opened up by Acclaim's high-resolution sports franchises at the time. Great animation and player models meld with outstanding collision detection. Played in well-rendered stadia (poorly-presented crowds aside), this is a game to fall in love with. Even considering its disappointments, competition from International League Soccer, This is Football and FIFA 2002 doesn't even come close." ~Gameplanet

#89: Madden NFL 2002
Posted Image
Release Date: September 12, 2001
Platforms: PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, Xbox, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Windows.
Developer: EA Sports

"Pound for pound Madden 2002 and NFL 2K2 represent the best we've seen from a variety of football titles over the years. Madden 2002 does many things well and displays the polish of a title that has been around (in its incrementally modified form) for several years. But it's Madden's inherently deep replay value that makes the game a real value for the dollar. Couple that with excellent pass execution, solid football strategies and integration with rosters from the graduates of NCAA 2002 and you have very deep, solid, although somewhat aged game of professional football." ~Gaming Age

#88: God Of War: Chains of Olympus
Posted Image
Release Date: March 4, 2008
Platform: Playstation Portable
Developer: Ready at Dawn Studios

"The PSP hasn’t yet seen a game with this much polish, this much visual punch, or this much bloody satisfaction. Everything feels meaty, be it the clash of weapon on flesh or the substantial amount of gameplay depth and environmental design. Not only is Chains of Olympus a worthy addition to the God of War franchise, it also stands on its own as a triple-A title in the PSP library." ~X-Play

#87: Mario Kart DS
Posted Image
Release Date: November 14, 2005
Platform: Nintendo DS
Developer: Nintendo

"Mario Kart DS is a blast to play, online or offline. The game's graphics are silky smooth and the track designs are fantastic...If you're looking for the best Mario Kart game ever made, this is it. Mario Kart DS is loaded with unlockables, features excellent gameplay, and with both local wireless and Wi-Fi, it is the best multiplayer game on the Nintendo DS. You will be playing this one for a long time to come. Buy it. Buy it now." ~Gaming Age

#86: World of Warcraft
Posted Image
Release Date: November 23, 2004
Platform: PC
Developer: Blizzard Entertainment

"World of Warcraft delivers great atmosphere through simplistic stylized environments, suited music, relevant quests, massive PvP raids, and party adventuring. With their customizable user interface, chat channels, and guild system, it is easy to build strong communities for rich gaming relationships. There are still a few quirks, but none that are uncommon to MMORPGs. Blizzard has indeed raised the bar. The price point, while often tough to cough up, is expected, as few other games offer this level of content and depth. If you enjoy fantasy RPGs and can afford the monthly fees, then World of Warcraft is worth your playing time." ~PC Gaming

#85: Virtua Fighter 4
Posted Image
Release Date: March 17, 2002 (Original), August 13, 2003 (Evolution)
Platform: Playstation 2
Developer: Sega

"You can't tell right off the bat, but Virtua Fighter 4 is the best fighting game in years. Even if you've never liked the Virtua Fighter series before--and there's a reasonable chance that's the case, considering the series has never taken off in the US like it has in Japan--you should still give Virtua Fighter 4 a try. The quicker pacing, the perfected controls, and the great-looking character designs, along with the outstanding AI and the unparalleled gameplay depth, make this a fighting game that just about everyone will agree on." ~Gamespot

#84: Assassin's Creed II
Posted Image
Release Date: November 17, 2009
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC
Developer: Ubisoft

"Assassin’s Creed II is one of those few games that manage to be both intimate and epic. Both poignant and light hearted. It’s even fun and educational at the same time. Most importantly, ACII is a game that doesn’t insult the gamers’ intelligence. This is a game that assumes you have an interest in one of the most interesting eras of human history, and a willingness to learn more about it. If not, I hear there are many budget first person shooters to play that won’t stimulate the senses even remotely as well as this masterpiece does." ~Gaming Excellence

#83: Jet Grind Radio
Posted Image
Release Date: November 1, 2000
Platform: Dreamcast
Developer: Smilebit

"Jet Grind Radio is easily one of the best games to be developed for Dreamcast. Even though the camera can be a pain in the ass a few times more than it should have, things are never unbearable. This game just has so much personality it’s almost sickening. Perfect graphics and sound, mixed with near flawless gameplay is the ideal recipe for a brilliant game. If this doesn’t sell systems, I don’t know what will." ~Gaming Target

#82: Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Posted Image
Release Date: October 26, 2000
Platform: Nintendo 64
Developer: Nintendo

"Majora's mask is a gem in itself. It is a direct follow-up to Ocarina of Time, and the game feels very similar to the first. As stated before, Majora's Mask IS darker (in feeling and graphically) than Ocarina of Time, and has a feeling of urgency flowing through it. The puzzles and dungeons throughout this great adventure are VERY well put together. I'm amazed at the creativity showcased in every corner of this game; it really is amazing. With the new aspect brought in by the 72-hour limit, as well as a whole new world to explore, this game couldn't get any better. This one will keep you busy as long, or longer, than Ocarina of Time did" ~GameBoyz

#81: Mario Kart Super Circuit
Posted Image
Release Date: August 27, 2001
Platform: GameBoy Advanced
Developer: Intelligent Systems

"...it's that randomness which gives Mario Kart most of its appeal. Races tend to be quick and absurdly frantic affairs, with the action so close that it's impossible to determine a winner until everyone's crossed the finishing line. There is obviously scope for bettering your skills both as driver and combatant, and the sense of achievement from outplaying the competition is immense, but ultimately Super Circuit's greatest achievement has to be how immediately and universally the game's exceptional thrills can be enjoyed." ~Pocket Gamer UK

#80: SSX
Posted Image
Release Date: October 30, 2000
Platform: Playstation 2
Developer: EA Sports BIG

"In the end, SSX is a terrific snowboarding game that has all the right stuff. Every element comes together and makes for a game that is extremely fun and rewarding to play. The graphics will make you shake your head in disbelief even after a month of playing it, the sound effects can actually convey a sense of texture, and the music will have you figuring out the best way to hook your PS2 up to your computer to record the soundtrack. It's also a very challenging game that at times crosses the line of frustration, a line that you're sure to be more than happy to cross time and time again since the game is extremely rewarding when you do well...SSX is a must-have PlayStation 2 game that certainly sets a new standard for snowboarding video games." ~Gamespot

#79: Guitar Hero
Posted Image
Release Date: November 8, 2005
Platform: Playstation 2
Developer: Red Octane, MTV Games

"There has never been a finer peripheral-based videogame than Guitar Hero. Its immediacy, accessibility and sheer enjoyability far exceed those of any other game released in the past year and in terms of sheer universal appeal, it's something of a revolution. As a rhythm action title, it is essential; it's a piece of pioneering software that mixes pure, reactionary videogame challenge with the universally affecting power of music in order to create a game that appeals to literally everybody on some level." ~Video Games Daily

#78: Rock Band
Posted Image
Release Date: November 30, 2007
Platforms: Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Wii, Xbox 360
Developer: Harmonix, MTV Games

"Rock Band is a fantastic game which is likely to be the hit of many parties, and is likely to launch a good number of garage bands, possibly with pretty decent drummers. And, at least the guitarists will have strong fingers, even if they have to work on getting the right strings and finger-placement." ~Game Vortex

#77: Vagrant Story
Posted Image
Release Date: May 15, 2000
Platform: Playstation
Developer: Squaresoft

"Not only is the game's story one of the best you'll find in a videogame, but it also rivals many of today's films. The game's goodness doesn't stop there as Vagrant Story is also blessed with a tremendously deep battle system, beautiful in-game graphics, and an engrossing musical soundtrack. Simply put, Vagrant Story is a true work of art and is one of the most cinematic experiences you'll find on PlayStation. It's not only one of this year's best games -- it's one of the greatest of all-time." ~IGN

#76: Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
Posted Image
Release Date: November 15, 2004 (GCN), August 24, 2009 (Wii)
Platforms: Gamecube, Wii
Developer: Retro Studios

"Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is in every way as great an achievement as its predecessor. It's gorgeous, it plays wonderfully and it creates a game world as convincing as the one we live in." ~Game Chronicles

#75: Madden NFL 2004
Posted Image
Release Date: August 11, 2003
Platforms: Xbox, Playstation, Playstation 2, GameCube, Game Boy Advanced, PC
Developer: EA Sports

"This year’s Madden outing has everything to prove that it deserves to be the number one game in the pack this time down field. With a simply fantastic franchise mode, addictive mini camp mode, EA Bio, and the new voice chat feature for online play, Electronic Arts and Tiburon have pulled away from the rest of the football pack once again. If you’re looking for insane depth, realism, quality online play, and fun, Madden is the place to be in 2004." ~Gaming Target

#74: Rock Band 2
Posted Image
Release Date: September 14, 2008 (360), October 19, 2008 (PS3), December 18, 2008 (Wii, PS2)
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii, Playstation 2
Developers: Harmonix, MTV Games

"For gamers who have yet to get into Rock Band, this is the perfect time to start. Rock Band 2 features all of the great options from the original game plus a whole new and upgraded set of modes to fulfill just about anything you want out of the experience. For Rock Band veterans, there's enough new content in the sequel that warrants a purchase in my opinion. Plus you won't be punished for having already downloaded music packs since you can bring those along too. At the very least, you're getting over 100 new songs for $60 which is still a deal in itself and you can use your existing instruments. In the end Rock Band 2 is the definitive Rock Band experience and no gamer with a love for the genre should pass it up." ~411Mania

#73: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
Posted Image
Release Date: December 9, 2008
Platform: Playstation 2
Developer: Atlus

"On the surface, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 may seem like a simple repackaging of Persona 3, but under the surface lies something more.Persona 4 is Persona 3, but better in perhaps every way. Everything — from the story to the combat system to the dungeon crawling and Social Links — has been improved. Considering that Persona 3 was already an excellent game, Persona 4 is a true standout. If you're an RPG fan who owns a PlayStation 2, you owe it to yourself to pick up this game. You won't regret it." ~Worth Playing

#72: SSX3
Posted Image
Release Date: October 20, 2003
Platforms: PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, Game Boy Advance
Developer: EA Sports BIG

"SSX 3 offers an experience like no other, a rush that just can’t be matched. It had a lot to live up to, but EA Big have delivered a game that lives up to the standards Tricky set, and then some. SSX 3 is visually stunning, expertly designed, and the ultimate example of fun. Now that, is synergy." ~Thunderbolt

#71: Soul Calibur 2
Posted Image
Release Date: August 27, 2003
Platforms: Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox 360
Developer: Namco

"This game is good enough for casual gamers to love, and fighting fanatics to enjoy as well. Soul Calibur II comes very highly recommended and deserves every bit of kudos it deserves. I also know that down the road, many will be comparing fighters to this game - not many games out there are well done. Period." ~Gaming Age

#70: Advance Wars
Posted Image
Release Date: September 10, 2001
Platform: Game Boy Advanced
Developer: Intelligent Systems

"Advance Wars is as brilliant as they come on the Game Boy Advance. The game isn't this action-packed button-mashing thumb-buster on the system, but Advance Wars is incredibly intense and amazingly addictive...especially when you learn every little nuance of the game design. Single player mode is a challenge in itself, but when you get another player (or three) into the battlefield, that's when you see just how versatile the game design really is." ~IGN

#69: Final Fantasy XII
Posted Image
Release Date: October 31, 2006
Platform: Playstation 2
Developer: Square Enix

"It's not hard to see us looking back in five years time and seeing FFXII as a pivotal, changing moment in how RPGs are designed; a game which drew on the experience of Final Fantasy's branches into tactical strategy and massively multiplayer, as well as on the more mature storytelling of other mediums, and folded it back into the number series, to wonderful result." ~Eurogamer

#68: SSX Tricky
Posted Image
Release Date: November 5, 2001
Platforms: PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox
Developer: EA Sports BIG

"More than just an upgrade of the original, SSX Tricky is the best snowboarding game ever made. EA Sports Big has proven that it's not afraid to break new ground and that resting on its laurels is not an option. The trick system has been vastly improved, the graphics have received a slight upgrade, the story elements have increased significantly, and the sound is as solid as ever. If you were a fan of last year's game, SSX Tricky adds enough new elements to the mix to make it worth a look. If you have yet to play SSX and are interested in this sort of game, buying SSX Tricky is highly recommended." ~Gamespot[/i]

#67: Chrono Cross
Posted Image
Release Date: August 15, 2000
Platform: Playstation
Developer: Squaresoft

"I'll let that one comment stand alone: that I, a game reviewer, who in his weaker moments is filled with a spasmodic hatred for a genre that inhales his free time and vomits it back out, want to play Chrono Cross again. It is that good: it looks that good, it sounds that good, it is that fine an achievement of plot construction, and it is just that fun to play, that touching to experience. In Chrono Cross, Square has created a game that is every inch the equal of its predecessor, and the perfect complement to it." ~IGN

#66: Forza Motorsport 3
Posted Image
Release Date: October 27, 2009
Platform: Xbox 360
Developer: Turn 10 Studios

"Once upon a time in a land quite some miles away, a few boys dreamed of becoming the world’s best racers...winning all the money, living in stardom, and grabbing all the girls. Now every young boy in the world wants to be the next best racer, as they soar round vibrant computer animated tracks in the finest pixalated cars the world has ever seen. And you can see the joy on their face when they find out it’s no longer imagination, when they receive an invitation, to the best simulation racing experience around. So without further ado, I present to you, Forza Motorsport 3, and then some!" ~WondewallWeb

#65: Batman: Arkham Asylum
Posted Image
Release Date: August 25, 2009
Platforms: PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3
Developer: Rocksteady Studios

"Batman: Arkham Asylum on the PC may have been a few weeks late compared to the consoles but on the PC it really shines. The action is not too complicated and looks awesome while you get to do some nice free exploration around the island. Sure you can go straight through the storyline and finish the game quickly but you'll miss out on some of the extras and secrets that are scattered about the island. There are little nagging technical issues here and there but those don't get in the way of an incredibly enjoyable experience. If you have the PC to run it, it looks incredible. To really get the full experience, having a NVIDIA setup brings out all the visuals that make Arkham Asylum come to life. Yes, you can still have a blast playing it on other types of hardware but you'll be missing out on some of the cooler visuals without a PhysX capable setup. 3D's also pretty slick as well adds to the overall enjoyment of the game. My hats off to Rocksteady for finally delivering on a Batman game worthy of the character. They got most everything right with this one and I can't believe they were able to produce a title of this high quality in only their second try." ~Gaming Nexus

With the exception of one or two minor controller issues, everything about the game has been improved for the Xbox 360. So what are you waiting for? #63: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow

Platforms: Xbox, Playstation 2, Gamecube, PC
Developer: Ubisoft

"If you are fan of the original, or someone just intrigued by the premise; BUY THIS GAME. It deserves to be in every gamer’s collection, you won’t be disappointed. This game deftly raises the Splinter Cell franchise to the rarified air of the Mario’s, Metal Gears, and Zelda’s of the world. Simply put, this game is masterpiece." ~Gamezone

#62: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
Posted Image
Release Date: November 17, 2002 (Xbox), February 19, 2003 (PC), April 8, 2003 (PS2), April 10, 2003 (GCN)
Platforms: Xbox, PC, Playstation 2, Gamecube

"If you own and XBox this is the game to get, taking everything MGS founded and upping it a notch truly delivers a solid gameplay experience. If you are a huge fan of MGS then you will love SC. It takes years of developing to deliver a game of this magnitude and we should appreciate the level of excellence it delivers. Truly a great game for any gamer. A little short on story and really deep in gameplay, Splinter Cell will go down as one of the best XBox games ever created." ZTGameDomain

#61: Okami
Posted Image
Release Date: September 19, 2006 (PS2), April 15, 2008 (Wii)
Platforms: Playstation 2, Wii
Developer: Clover Studios

"Okami may be the only one to top Zelda at what it does best and that's a feat well-deserving of your praise and hard-earned dollars. Don't let Okami's esoteric "Japaneseness" ward you off - many Japanese didn't necessarily "get" the mythical references, either. That doesn't prevent the story and characters from being completely charming and a sly sense of humor mixes in perfectly with the dramatic moments. Okami is a game that pulls no punches and lands a knock-out blow with every thrust of its fists. The style of the game is not just superficial, friends, it's a bonafide work of art in its own right." ~PSX Extreme

#60: Devil May Cry
Posted Image
Release Date: October 17, 2001
Platform: Playstation 2
Developer: Capcom

"Devil May Cry is a pure work of art, a stylish, heart-pumping, tour de force of action and pure arcade gameplay that gets better, deeper, and harder as the game progresses. It's an absolute must-have for the system. If you own a PlayStation 2, you must get this game; if you don't own a PS2, Devil May Cry is entirely worth buying the system for all on its own." ~IGN

#59: Team Fortress 2
Posted Image
Release Date: October 10, 2007 (As part of "The Orange Box" 360/PC version), December 11, 2007 (As part of "The Orange Box" PS3 version), April 9, 2008 (Original)
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC
Developer: Valve

"[Team Fortress 2 is] something that if you’ve not picked up yet you really, really must. Now. Right now. Fire up Steam, get your credit card ready and buy it. You might not be into multiplayer games that much and you might hate twitch shooters, but hey – I did too, and I am so set in my ways that if this game can change my opinion then it can change yours. Make it happen." ~Ultra Ninjas

#58: God Of War 2
Posted Image
Release Date: March 13, 2007 (Original), November 17, 2009 (PS3)
Platforms: Playstation 2, Playstation 3
Developer: Sony Computer Entertainment Studios

"Games like God of War II are so exceedingly rare. I’ve been playing games for about twenty years now, and for a game to come along and instantly become one of my favorites of all time is something truly special. God of War II manages to take everything great about the original blockbuster classic and improve upon it, making an even more powerful and memorable experience." ~Digital Chumps"

#57: Braid
Posted Image
Release Date: August 6, 2008 (XBLA), April 10, 2009 (PC), November 12, 2009 (PSN)
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC
Developer: Number None Inc.

"Excellent but intellectually limited as a puzzle-platformer, Braid is made truly divine with emotional depth and a bittersweet humanity -- a monumentally relevant game that speaks highly of its creators and their potential audience's tolerance for new ideas. To say nothing of an absolutely brilliant, emotionally devastating "ending" that proves that time isn't really that malleable after all." ~1Up

#56: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4
Posted Image
Release Date: October 23, 2002
Platforms: Xbox, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, GameCube, PC
Developer: Neversoft

"There's so much more one could say about Tony Hawk 4 without rambling on, but it can only be done justice by going out and playing it yourself. Some of us can remember the old days when games like 720 on the NES were popular, and very little can prove how far the consumer market of electronic games has come more than Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4." ~Game Vortex

#55: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Posted Image
Release Date: March 9, 2008
Platforms: Wii
Developer: Sora

"Clearly, even in this era of mini-game collections and voting channels, Nintendo has not forsaken the hardcore. Super Smash Bros. Brawl has lived up to the promise that has been dangled in front of us for so many years and should be snapped up by just about anyone willing to hold a controller." ~X-Play

#54: Unreal Tournament 2004
Posted Image
Release Date: March 16, 2004
Platform: PC
Developer: Epic Games

"[Unreal Tournament 2004] gets serious props. Marrying the best elements of traditional UT with Halo, Tribes II and a bit of the Battlefield series, the game serves up intricate, breakneck battles at blinding speeds. The introduction of vehicles and new gameplay modes expands the series in fresh directions, leading to a game that actually lives up to its grandiose name." ~Game Vortex

#53: Final Fantasy IX
Posted Image
Release Date: November 14, 2000
Platform: Playstation
Developer: Squaresoft

"Being the last FF game to ever be released on the Playstation, Squaresoft sure did make it the best Final Fantasy game to date, I'm sorry FFVII and VI, but I just love FFIX's fresh new gameplay, I know many of you die-hard FF fans out there may be thinking I'm senile, but I really think that IX is the best of the series...don't pass up [Final Fantasy IX] or you will be sorry." ~PSX Extreme

#52: Forza Motorsport
Posted Image
Release Date: May 3, 2005
Platform: Xbox
Developer: Turn 10 Studios

"The depth of the game is quite impressive. There are so many little side roads to the game that I have just started to scratch the surface of all Forza offers. It is definitely the best racing game that is ever likely to see release on the Xbox, with the Xbox 360 now fast approaching on the horizon. And while it does not have superior numbers of cars and tracks to Gran Turismo 4, this baby really has it under the hood and, since this is Microsoft Game Studios’ first Forza game, we can probably expect something closer to parity once the franchise makes the jump to Xbox 360 and a couple more editions of it come out. As likely a perfect racing game as you’ll ever find on the Xbox, so a perfect 5/5." ~Gameshark

#51: NBA 2K2
Posted Image
Release Date: October 24, 2001 (DC), January 12, 2002 (PS2), February 27, 2002 (Xbox), March 20, 2002 (GCN)
Platforms: Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube
Developer: Visual Concepts

"There's no two ways about it folks: NBA 2K2 is the best-playing basketball game on the planet. Visual Concepts have done a fine job with the Dreamcast, and this title is a fitting tribute to the little white console that didn't get all the respect it deserved. If you like basketball and own a DC, you can do no better. If you like basketball and own a PS2, spend the $50 to get a marked-down DC and pick up this game - it wipes the floor with EA's NBA Live 2002 on PS2. Alternatively, you could just wait for Sega to release NBA 2K2 on PS2 in the next couple of months. No matter how you get your paws on it, there's no better simulation basketball title available than NBA 2K2." ~Gaming Age

#50: Pro Evolution Soccer 3
Posted Image
Release Date: October 24, 2003
Platform: Playstation 2
Developer: Konami

"All of the new improvements in gameplay and the new features will be appreciated by soccer lovers and novices alike. This is a perfect example of a sequel actually exceeding its original and if you have any love for the sport of soccer this needs to be in your game library. Even if you are the proud owner of [PES 2] there is enough new material here to justify an upgrade. Don't let the EA monster fool you - [Pro Evolution Soccer 3] is the best soccer game in the world." ~Game Chronicles

#49: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Posted Image
Release Date: November 6, 2003
Platforms: Playstation 2, Xbox, Gamecube, PC
Developer: Ubisoft

"Prince of Persia is an outstanding game and stands head and shoulders above the other Xbox offerings in the genre. The intuitive control systems will surely be duplicated and immitated for years to come and certainly should be. It was the game that was supposed to catapult Ubisoft out of the Rayman era and into the future and it did just that even before it got here. Thanks to the innovations of Ubisoft's Montreal development house, its legacy has already been felt in games like Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six 3 and their outstanding lighting and soft physics techniques. " ~IGN

#48: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Posted Image
Release Date: March 17, 2009 (DS), October 20, 2009 (PSP)
Platforms: Nintendo DS, Playstation Portable
Developer: Rockstar Games

"It’s a great comfort to know that Rockstar Games not only makes great games, but understands what makes them great. Chinatown Wars is the culmination of years of work as well as the spirit of ingenuity to bring one of the biggest series to the smallest screen. Nothing in the game feels half done or forced. If anything, the game feels like a development team having fun with a concept. Everything from being able to ram police cars, rampage missions, the touch screen mini-games, and even the story has this sense of fun underlining every bullet fired. Even if you are not a fan of the series, you will be doing yourself a favor by taking this tiny terror out for a spin." ~X-Play

#47: Civilization IV
Posted Image
Release Date: October 25, 2005
Platform: PC
Developer: Firaxis Games

"Civilization IV proves that not only is turn-based strategy gaming not dead, but when it's done right, it provides the type of rewarding, evenly paced gameplay that made the genre so popular back in the days when games like Master of Magic and the original Civilization ruled the hobby. This really is strategy gaming at its very best and you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you skipped it. It's that good." ~Gameshark
