The 100 Most Critically Acclaimed Video Games of the 2000's

GTA IV wasn't even as good as San Andreas. I hate video game critics; they don't know what they're talking about.

Wind Waker was an amazing game deserving of good reviews though. I suppose I'm just more familiar with angry forum nerds.

Wait, but the angry forum nerds are the ones who hate WW, not the critics.

And yeah GTA IV was fine, but I don't think it was the game of the decade or anything near. I wouldn't have any gripes with Super Mario Galaxy winning, though, that game made me cum so much I could have filled the pacific ocean if it had suddenly dried up.

Okami also got a lower place than it deserved, that game was AMAZING.

#19: NFL 2K1
Posted Image
Release Date: September 7, 2000
Platform: Dreamcast
Developer: Visual Concepts

"NFL 2K1 is quite simply the most comprehensive and authentic football game around, and it's a blast to play. I hate to be repetitive, but there's just no comparing this game with anything else, and the online features make it a no-brainer. I may sound like I'm doing a plug for Sega here, but if you want the best football game out there, you're going to have to pick up a Dreamcast." ~GameCritics

#18: Perfect Dark
Posted Image
Release Date: May 22, 2000
Platform: Nintendo 64
Developer: Rare

"But the question remains: Is it fun? It is incredibly so - every bit as much as GoldenEye 007 and more. As a single-player or multiplayer FPS experience Perfect Dark is unparalleled on the console systems...If you've been playing GoldenEye 007 up to now, you'll be pleased to hear that there's finally a game that has eclipsed it, one with enough to it to keep you playing for the next few years until its inevitable sequel comes around." ~Gamespot

#17: LittleBigPlanet
Posted Image
Release Date: October 27, 2008 (Original), September 8, 2009 (Game Of The Year)
Platform: Playstation 3
Developer: Media Molecule

"It’s so satisfying to finally have a game that not only lives up to the hype but exceeds it so many ways it’s almost unfair. If you haven’t guessed by now, LittleBigPlanet is one of those games. The pre-made levels are a blast and offer some of the most creative and awe-inspiring experiences you’ll ever have in a game. The level editor contains enough options for us to create entire games for the rest of our lives. And the online community means an endless supply of content and playability. If Metal Gear Solid 4 wasn’t reason enough to pick up a PS3, you have absolutely no excuse now." ~X-Play

#16: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Posted Image
Release Date: September 20, 2000
Platforms: Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Playstation 2
Developer: Neversoft

"Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 is a great game, but it's not the gaming masterpiece that some members of the press would have you believe. The graphics are fairly good and the sound (if you like heavy metal) is great. The gameplay is extremely addictive and pulling off complex tricks is just as difficult as it would be in the real world...Well done Neversoft, Treyarch and Activision on a brilliant game." ~FUTURE GAMEZ

#15: Championship Manager 4
Posted Image
Release Date: March 28, 2003
Platform: PC
Developer: Sports Interactive

"The greatness of Championship Manager 4 screams at you from every angle: it has a fantastic user interface that even the complete ChampMan novice can slip straight into, is underpinned by a staggering amount of depth to cater for literally anyone, and is frighteningly realistic - not to mention ridiculously entertaining. As we scribe, the game has already smashed the sales record for the fastest-selling PC game ever. If you're a PC-owning football fan, you owe it to yourself to own this game - it's that simple. The ultimate fantasy football? Back of the net." ~Eurogamer

#14: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Posted Image
Release Date: November 13, 2001 (Original), November 5, 2002 (Substance)
Platforms: Playstation 2, Xbox ("Substance" Edition), PC ("Substance" Edition)
Developer: Konami

"The fact of the matter is that Metal Gear Solid 2 is more than just a story, more than just a movie. It's a game, and one of the best ever made. If it isn't the best story ever told, well, the games industry obviously just has a ways to go in that regard....Play it just once and you're cheating yourself of more than the purchase price (or a rental fee, for you cheap bastards). You're cheating yourself of a great experience, and perhaps the best on PlayStation 2, if it weren't for the fact that we'll probably see another Metal Gear adventure before this generation concludes. We have something to look forward to, then, as well as something to enjoy today." ~IGN

#13: Grand Theft Auto III
Posted Image
Release Date: October 22, 2001
Platforms: Playstation 2, Xbox, PC
Developer: Rockstar Games

"Rockstar and DMA Design have obviously spent some time making sure that Grand Theft Auto III is a quality product, and that quality shows in everything, from the graphics, to the sound, to the plot points, to the gameplay itself. Unlike previous games in the series, the game is extremely fun whether you play it as it was intended to be played or eschew the game's intended mission structure and set out on your own to wreak havoc throughout the city. While the violent nature of the game will surely turn some people off and kids simply shouldn't be allowed anywhere near it, Grand Theft Auto III is, quite simply, an incredible experience that shouldn't be missed by anyone mature enough to handle it." ~Gamespot

#12: Bioshock
Posted Image
Release Date: August 21st, 2007
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC
Developer: 2K Games

"Bioshock is easily one of the best games ever made. The plot rivals great novels and the voice acting and animation trump some of the best movies. BioShock will forever be the proof we point to in the “games as art” debate as one of the best in its class. This is our Casablanca, our Ulysses and our Mona Lisa folks. It may never get any better than this." ~Gamervision

#11: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Posted Image
Release Date: October 26, 2004
Platforms: Playstation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360, PC
Developer: Rockstar Games

"In the end, San Andreas eclipses every other game that has come before it simply because it is more than simply a bunch of code on a disc. San Andreas and the whole Grand Theft Auto series is truly a phenomenon that tests the boundaries of our society by gently pushing at the limits of our collective fabric. It puts forth ideas that we shy from and lets us explore them in a safe and controlled environment...And for this reason it stands alone as an unprecedented achievement. Regardless of what console you play it on, San Andreas must be experienced at all costs. It might not always be pretty, but it sure is fun." ~Gaming Excellence

It doesn't matter what anyone says, any list is a joke the instant MGS2 is rated higher than MGS3 and 4.

Nah, I like Raiden. I actually defend him when people say MGS2 sucks because Raiden is a faggot.

But you know, since you brought butts up, only someone with something shoved so far up his butt that it reaches the brain and impairs the ability to think logically would deny that MGS3 has better graphics, gameplay, story, sound, music, atmosphere and more general quality.

I don't think you understand how critics work, HJ.

Generally speaking, sequels review worse than the original. God Of War and Gears Of War are examples of this.

RE5 has a fatal flaw in the sense that unless you co-op you have to make do with a shitty AI, and the fact that having a partner at all completely kills any and all atmosphere the game might have had is also kinda gay. But I digress, that's not really the point here.

MGS3 improves on MGS2 in every way, so it's retarded that it gets a lower rank no matter how you twist and turn it. And yes, I am saying critics are retarded in that sense, too, it's not some personal grudge against your list you know.

That said though, it's ironic that every critic in the world is breaking their dick fapping to GTA IV.

gta IV was decent but definitely not better than San Andreas, imo.

in fact, gta IV, while pretty and with awesome setting and atmosphere, still felt like a huge step back from San Andreas for one reason or another.

oh fuck's sake, MGS2 at 14? get out. GET THE FUCK OUT.

perfect dark was pretty fun, though. i forgot it came out in like 2001 or something. i'm honestly surprised it ranks this high.

I didn't like GTA4 either. Every time I try to do a story mission I would get a phone call from stupid bitches about some irrelevant mission that I don't want to do.

It's annoying as shit.

What the FUCK is MGS2 doing ahead of MGS3 and 4? This is retarded. List now proven to be a illegitimate troll list.

#10: The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Posted Image
Release Date: November 19, 2006
Platforms: Wii, Gamecube
Developer: Nintendo

"In the end, there's no way that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess disappoints. It's an excellent addition to the franchise, and you'll have an enormous amount of fun playing it from start to finish. It's an amazing epitaph to the GameCube's life and it's certainly the best game from Nintendo this year. If you've been on the fence in any capacity, then please rest assured that you'll not be disappointed. Nintendo's flagship game has arrived in style and you better damned well appreciate it. It's ultimately fantastic. " ~Gamespy

#9: Fallout 3
Posted Image
Release Date: October 28, 2008
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC
Developer: Bethesda Game Studios

"Fallout 3 is rare that a game gets me genuinely excited and even rarer for one to tempt me into calling in a sick day just so I can keep playing. Fallout 3 was able to do both, and is a game that deserves every accolade and award that may come its way. If Fallout 3 isn't already in your collection, it should be. ~Game Vortex

#8: Half-Life 2
Posted Image
Release Date: November 16, 2004
Platforms: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC
Developer: Valve

"If you're a fan of Half-Life, action games in general, or are looking for a way to get into PC gaming, this is it. It'll hook you, reel you in, and hold you captive for serious hours of hardcore brilliance. This is gaming at its best and shows that the future holds no bounds when the might of technology, precision of design, and touch of artistry work in tandem." ~IGN

#7: Halo: Combat Evolved
Posted Image
Release Date: November 15, 2001
Platforms: Xbox, PC
Developer: Bungie

"Halo contains everything that makes a great videogame, great. Excellent visuals, some of the best videogame audio yet, a cool storyline and theme, and plenty of replayability and challenge. If for some reason you can't stand first person shooters then it may be difficult to convince you otherwise that Halo is more than just Quake with a storyline. Along with Dead or Alive 3, Halo is one of those Xbox games you should definitely pick up at launch." ~Gaming Age

#6: Resident Evil 4
Posted Image
Release Date: January 11, 2005
Platforms: Gamecube, Playstation 2, PC, Wii
Developer: Capcom

"With every new development, every new fight and scenario, the player likes to believe he now has a handle on how far, how high, this game can go. Yet, confounding expectations, it keeps raising its game, upping the pace, thrumming that adrenal gland like a mad drummer. Never before has a game been packed with so many sublime and well-considered moments. Perhaps in this age of soulless cash-ins, sedentary ideas and concepts, some of us will feel raw after this level of entertainment. How can we play normal games ever again?" ~Video Gamer

#5: Metal Gear Solid
Posted Image
Release Date: May 5, 2000
Platform: Game Boy Color
Developer: Konami

"This, folks, is a Game Boy Color game done right. It's clear that the right team was put to the task of bringing the classic Metal Gear to the Nintendo handheld. I want every official Game Boy Color publisher and developer to look at what Konami has done on the system, and then look at the sales figures. I guarantee you this will be one of the top selling games for the Game Boy Color, and this will prove once and for all that, yes, you can spend quality time and resources on a Game Boy Color title and still make it pay off in the end. Absolutely brilliant. " ~IGN

#4: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Posted Image
Release Date: October 13, 2009
Platform: Playstation 3
Developer: Naughty Dog

"Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is one of the best games this year on the PlayStation 3. It has incredible cinematics and provides a thrill ride in a single-player campaign that doesn't feel too short or too long. The deep and incredibly fun multiplayer features everything that makes the single-player segment so great: amazing visuals, near-perfect audio and a sharp presentation that makes this among the best of the best. It's better than the original Uncharted in every way, and it's easily one of my contenders for Game of the Year 2009." ~Worthplaying

#3: Metroid Prime
Posted Image
Release Date: November 17, 2002 (Prime), August 24, 2009 (Trilogy)
Platforms: Gamecube, Wii
Developer: Retro Studios

"I recommend Metroid Prime as an absolute buy -- skip the renting facade -- for every owner of a GameCube. It's a real collector's item. You'll want to keep this one even after your done spending 30+ hours with it. The only reason one would avoid it is if action/adventures are not part of your narrower taste in games. If you fall into that category, you have no idea what you're missing out on. Metroid Prime is an instant classic that you will use to measure forthcoming software by." ~IGN

#2: Super Mario Galaxy
Posted Image
Release Date: November 12, 2007
Platform: Wii
Developer: Nintendo

"Super Mario Galaxy is a fantastic game, a game that displays Nintendo's continuing ambition to explore the possibilities of a 3D platformer, something that no-one else has really managed to do. It's considerably better than Super Mario Sunshine on all accounts, with the new emphasis on gravity it becomes once again a game that requires skill and timing rather than just an exploratory mind. This will be an instant hit and surely go down as one of the best Mario games. A must have for all." ~Nintendo Life
