I figured this would be a good thread to recommend each other films/tv series and such. And at the end you can rate it with our new up and down smilies or something (3 thumbs up = best, 3 thumbs down = worst). I've just seen Equilibrium. It's a shame how much this movie (and its fans) compares itself to The Matrix. Yes, some elements are the same (awesome gun/kung-fu fights) but there are loads, loads of differences. It's got a quite good story line, some plot twists, plenty of action for the action fan (but by no means too much!) and the most badass fight I've seen in a long, long time. Probably ever. While not as good as The Matrix it easily beats Reloaded and Revolutions, I highly recommend it. Also, it's got Christian Bale <3 2 thumbs up!  EDIT: suggestion for rating shows:  = recommended   = highly recommended    = must-watch  = for fans of the genre/series only   = quite crap    = one of the most awful things I've seen this year |

I've also finished watching Welcome to the NHK!. A very odd anime in retro-spect, it has everything from comedy (for a couple of episodes) to drama (actually made me a bit depressed). It makes fun of things in our youth culture, especially in Japan, such as World Of Warcraft, eroge (erotic games) and terrible Japanese music. Recommended, but not a must-see. Graphically quite impresive (FLCL-style) with very good music. 1 thumb up  |

right now I'm in the process of watching Blue Sonnet, a 5 ep OVA from 1989...not only that, but I'm watching it on VHS sub, talk about old school motha fucka :ensam: :ensam: :ensam: I've only seen the first couple eps so far but I like it. Nothing amazing, moreso "average", but average isn't a bad thing. And it owns because one of the first scenes was a girl having her period in the shower. It was like, wait is that blood? holy shit THAT'S BLOOD OMG IT'S HER PEROID OH FUCK OH FUCK GROSSSS and I shivered out of grossness, it was awesome. But yeah it got my attention because it said TEENAGE GIRL IS THE ULTIMATE WEAPON and I was like OMG SAIKANO RIPPED THIS ANIME OFF but it's not like Saikano outside of that...it's about a girl who's a cyborg that's "the ulimate weapon" who's hunting down a girl who has the esper Red Fang inside her, and the ultimate weapon girl isn't suppose to have emotions but she gets emotions! :-( :-( and the girl with Red Fang insider her has to deal with that thing :-( :-( Doesn't seem like it's on DVD...wanted to Netflix it to get it in good quality, they didn't have it...so then I tried to search for any place with it and no one has it haha. I e-mailed the company with the license to see if they plan to do a future release. I eventually found a torrent with it, I assume VHS rip, but seeders are hard to come by. And ofcoarse, as said, it's licensed, so fansub groups won't touch it. So then I tried to find information on the manga right? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. The only english website I can find dealing with the manga is this blog which has translations for the first 1 and a half volumes, but no scans. And the manga hasn't been licensed AFAIK so, yeah (The guy that translated them was translating off the korean version, haha). |

:weird: Yeah, I don't know about that... Saw Lost In Translation today. Okay film, definitely has its moments. I mostly watched it because of the beautiful scenes, as the whole movie plays in Japan (in fact, everything is in Tokyo, I think) The love story is so-so, there are some interesting characters but it's mostly the japanese culture that you have to be interested in if you want to enjoy it. I'll give it a thumb up  Also saw some Scrubs today but I'm sure I don't need to elaborate. Very good comedy, probably in my top 5/10ish. But since you all already know Scrubs you should just watch Arrested Development, the funniest show ever.   |

I'm watching NHK right now... Jon and I watched one episode of it when we were laying in bed with nothing to do.. and I ended up liking it and I've been watching an episode or two every night or other night. I'm actually really enjoying it, I'd rate it a little higher than "1 Thumb Up", though... On far away scenes, the characters kinda turn into little blobs.. but it's not too bad. I haven't finished it yet, but it's alright. ~MagicWings |

Not the reason why I gave it 1 thumbs up :weird: Though the graphics of an anime help, I'm not bothered by small details like that >> Well I'd say that a thumbs up is recommended, and two thumbs up is highly recommended... NHK isn't a much watch by any means, it's just enjoyable. Some of the characters really pissed me off in the series (Misaki and class rep), some of the episodes get really boring at times and I saw the "plot twists" in the last 2 episodes coming from miles away. I also feel the anime is a bit too inconsistent, they could've done a better job mixing up different genres. The ending is satisfactory, the music is great and they do a good job of explaining everything, but by no means would you miss out on much if you don't watch it. It's just recommended. |

Just saw Across The Universe. Brilliant film, story and characters - though I have to complain about something: there's a few too many songs in the films and some of them feel completely forced in the film (mostly Blackbird and Helter Skelter). The scenes where they get high are just plain stunning, especially an underwater one. The film brings a good message and is very, very recommended Two thumbs up   Must-watch for any Beatles fans. Other than that I saw Knocked Up and Superbad. Both were okay, if teen-films are your kind of thing you can do a lot worse than Superbad, but neither were my kind of thing. Michael Cera rocks, though, if you like Superbad you should see his other stuff. Both get a thumbs down IMO  Only for lovers of the genre |

I saw Atonement yesterday. Beautiful film (based on a novel), easily one of the best of last year. The story's quite intelligent and the acting superb (I didn't know Keira Knightley could actually act, I didn't like her in PotC). I personally dislike pretty much every war film out there so when it focuses a bit more on the war (about 1/4 of the film) I didn't quite like it as much but the ending made up for it. Beautiful film score as well and you can tell the whole cast is very talented. 2 thumbs up   |

PS I Love You. I was sort of forced to see this film after my flatmates and I decided to see a film (our internet wasn't working and we were bored) - Sweeney Todd to be exact. But as it turned out that doesn't come out till tomorrow here so we went to see the only film that was playing at 10 PM: PS I Love You. This film fucking sucks. Nothing about is good, and I literally mean that. The characters annoyed me to no end and it's not just cause it's a chick flick, I actually enjoyed a few of those. The story is about as coherent as your average porn movie, there are supposed to be Irish people in there but they sound like bloody pirates (I'm serious) and the whole message they tried to send you at the end was "you can get over someone even if it's your husband dying" but the woman ended with a guy that was a carbon copy of her late husband. Way to get over someone: find a replacement that does the exact same things. I shouted out "what the fuck, that would never happen!" and "yeah right" like 20 times during the film but let's face it: this is what girls want. They want some stupid distortion from the truth about relationships. I'd give it 2 thumbs down but I've only started to hate it more typing about it    |

Saw Sweeney Todd in the cinema today. What a masterpiece, very beautiful and definitely one of Tim Burton's finest creations so far. Johnny Depp is as impressive as ever. But be warned: this is a musical. You'll be drowned in songs, especially in the first half. Speaking of which, the second half is much better because the story finally picks a faster pace. I'm not gonna spoil much about it, you probably already know if you want to watch it or not; if you're a Tim Burton or Johnny Depp fan this is a no-brainer. Same if you're in for a good horror-rific (it's 18+) musical. Highly recommended   |

After seeing Juno I can wholeheartedly recommend it to, well, everyone =] it wasn't as funny as I thought it would be (don't get me wrong, it has its funny moments, especially with Jason Bateman and Michael Cera) but the story was really good and the message it tried to send out as well. I don't want to repeat myself too often but this cast was amazing as well, I liked everyone - except for the rich woman, you'll see who I mean. EDIT: Oh and   |

In the middle of watching Fight Club. Easily one of the best films I've ever seen (not the first time I'm watching it), so if you haven't seen it yet: do so now. The title scared me off at first as I thought it would just be another action flick, but the way this film presents a whole new way of life and makes you ponder about what really matters in life is impressive. Also, am I the only one who is strangely attracted to the crazy girl? Not like "omg she's so hawt" attractive but there's just something about her... eventhough she's totally fucked up. |
