Nearly that time of year again and was blethering to a friend online about festive food and was wondering if any of you made stuff around this time of year that you don't normally make at other times. I don't mean Christmas dinner itself.

I always look at all the housey mags that have all this lovely festive fare to make, and I always think, how nice it would be to spend time making my cake, my mincemeat pies, mulled wine...etc., but the truth is I don't do it!!! I can remember my mother making all sorts of lovely things, including her own sausage rolls and filling up the freezer....I just go to Tesco!!! But because I really, really, really want to make all these lovely things, do you think it matters that I buy it all???

I make Lincolnshire plum loaf - the cake version not the bread one- The tradition is that you give them as gifts at Christmas and if you recieve one it comes with a wish for a merry month.

I don't make mince pies - I buy them as my pastry is like industrial cement :(

I've made homemade mincemeat - but I do it without the suet and cut our a lot of sugar - just use the natural fruit sugar in the apples, and dried fruit I use.

Stovies , real wholesome hearty soup ie Scotch broth , Cock-a-leekie , Lentil and ham hough all through the winter months . Potted hough for New Year . Liz's Steakpie for New Year too as it's willie h's day off .

Just add cranberry jelly and it's festive stovies rofl
Potted hough and potted heid are different things .
Potted hough is the hock ( hough ) of a coo . really tasty meat but very tough. Hence the mincing it .
potted heid is just that , sheeps brains .

I remember when my dad cooked cow's tongue for New year too .

Willie, sorry we had this Potted heid discussion before!!

When you mentioned tongue, I remember when we lived on Lewis my mum would buy a tongue, or maybe she just nicked it from a passing four legged beast. I seem to remember that there was some sort of weight attached to the end of it and this thing was left hanging off the end of the table!!

We also had our own chickens when we lived there, and I suspect our christmas lunch was more than likely one of our babes!!!

Is it the mince pies that sound delicious or the plum loaf - the former definately isn't the the plum loaf is!
