I was chatting to a friend of mine last night about Facebook and other Social Networking Sites. What he told me freaked me out slightly and we have no idea how this would happen. He registered with Facebook. He entered the minimum of details, his name, email address and that was about it. The following day he was given a list of "suggested" friends, people he may know etc......what shocked him the most was to discover that out of the list of 30 "suggested" friends, he actually knew 20 of them. He wondered if FB raided his email address book, but some of the people were not on his email system. So how on earth does this work?? naegotscoobie I know that I keep getting Calum Macdonald (yes that Calum Macdonald) as a suggested friend, although we have no mutual friends......and also a lady who lives in my village, who's son is in school with my eldest, but we are not friends and I don't know why this would happen. Could it be that the 20 people my friend was given are people who have previously mentioned his name in a post, or maybe searched to see if he was on FB?? Whatever the reasons, I do find it quite concerning and very Big Brotherish!! Anyone got any ideas why this would happen?? Or are your hangovers way too massive to even attempt to think about it!!! rofl |

They might be correlating all kinds of data available on the net. Did you specify a location? Maybe they go by that. Try googling your e-mail address or any other data you gave them and see what turns up Or one of those people once sent you an invite to facebook and they kept the e-mail address and now they present you with their friends. I am not a facebook member, but they have my private e-mail adress, because somebody else gave it to them. I was invited to a specific group, so they might take clues from stuff like that as well. I know ive had "friends requests" from folk i dont know, i "ignore" them but it turns out there are on pages of some of my friends so i can only presume that because you are on some one elses friends list that you should know them..... Just hit the ignore button.... ;) ;) |

The suggested friends I get are usually either`friends of friends, or are linked to organisations/groups I have something to do with (eg Gaelic, Runrig), so I imagine FB automatically uses the little info you give to do not only a FB search (which might well include names of people who have idly searched on FB for you earlier) but a net search. That's why for my 'active' FB usage, I don't give real info, and have separate email addresses for these things which don't show my name. It's probably not 'sinister' as such (aggressively commercially-oriented rather than super-spy political or criminal stuff), but definitely intrusive, and it's probably wise to be of a cautious disposition. :A I have very few friends, relatively speaking, and don't tell anyone much on there, and aim to keep it that way. |

Between cctv cameras and information you give for everyday things, I think big brother knows all he needs to about most uk citizens! I have a couple of these social network things...and yeh....so long as they don't empty my bank account....I don't think they know more than any other organisation. Remember when 'social networking' actually involved talking and meeting people rofl ...or am I just a grumpy auld woman rofl |
