Actually a very informative piece flors - I saw it a couple of days ago after someone posted a link on a Bird forum.

Mike Harris is THE authority on Puffins, having many years ago written the definitive book published by Poyser and now I believe sadly out of print. Hope this new research will result in an updated edition! :unsure I could never afford the book when it was new, and have never been able to afford it since as even on eBay (on the rare occasions a copy turns up!) it is always well over my budget. :(

We actually met Mike on Fair Isle one Spring back in the mid-1980s and he was a really nice chap with a wealth of fascinating facts about Puffins. I could have bought the book there and had it signed but it was too expensive on top of the cost of the trip as well! gr33tin I'll never forget him telling us that, if you look at a painting of a Puffin, you can always tell whether the artist has actually seen or studied the bird in real life by how they have portrayed the feet. The inner claw on each foot sort of curves inwards, to assist the bird in digging its burrow and it is astonishing how often artists show the claw pointing forwards! rofl
