The harrowing images and stories coming out of Haiti are devastating to watch. Though I spend many days with the statistics and stories of extreme poverty, the scale of this tragedy is heartbreaking. Times like this remind me of our common humanity and the need to do all we can to help… I have already donated to help the earthquake victims and gathered donations from friends and relatives (my and their amount: over 500 $ until now). And as I work for ONE (www.one.org ) , the organisation that was founded by Bono, Bob Geldof and others, I ask you to help us in this: "So here’s our goal as ONE: $890 million for Haiti. That’s how much Haiti owes to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and a handful of others. Sign the petition to ask Haiti’s creditors to act quickly and cancel Haiti’s debts: Petition text: Dear finance ministers, IMF, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank and bilateral creditors: As Haiti rebuilds from this disaster, please work to secure the immediate cancellation of Haiti’s $890 million debt and ensure that any emergency earthquake assistance is provided in the forms of grants, not debt-incurring loans. Haiti’s debt was largely accrued under the corrupt Duvalier regime, which borrowed money recklessly and spent it selfishly for 30 years. The new government has struggled with debt payments. And now, as the nation tries to recover from one of the worst disasters in recent years we can help by lifting this debt. Please join ONE and sign the petition today Act Now" Here is the link to the petition: http://www.one.org/international/actnow/haiti/ We have been in an earthquake and its aftermath in Peru in 2001 ourselves and want to do all we can to help the people of Haiti. Just to show you why I work for ONE and want to help the people in Haiti and other poor countries: Posted Image That is me with my son in 1992 and again me in 200o in Peru. That is how you live in a poor country, without job, ill and without enough food. |

Thanks for the link, Martina. I really hope that if there is a positive outcome from all this, it will be that Haiti will get the attention and the help so they can build some kind of viable future for themselves. They are wonderful people who deserve better. |
