Nintendo serious gaming?

This is a question that's been brought up several times, so I thought I'd make a thread about it.

Do you think that playing on a Nintendo console is serious gaming?

That's the thing I'm trying to address. People consider such juvenile things as 'serious' but will happily consider something unworthy of their time if it tries to offer something special for everyone.

I seriously can't be the only one who sees the problem there.

I think Nintendo is serious gaming. Obviously there are some games that are aimed at a younger age group but Nintendo has things like ZombiU. The way I look at things is basically like they have a mixture.

People probably don't like Nintendo because it has less blood and gore than other companies.

Damn. So when did this turn into a mass-debate?

Hm, true. People want different things. SEGA was just a complete fail.

Surely you cannot say Sonic was a fail?

All I know is that I don't care for blood and gore, but I still don't like Nintendo that much anymore. So, I'm definitely not one of those people you talk about.

Besides me not seeing the company as so serious, I think they publish too many crap games. Like I said before, they overuse Mario, Zelda and just the rest of the SSB characters.

I don't really think SEGA was a complete fail. I didn't play much by SEGA in the past, but I know that now, they publish a lot of great games. Unfortunately, most of those games don't get a lot of hype, for example Resonance of Fate, Viking or Alpha Protocol.

Yeah, Sonic wasn't a fail, but his recent games are going in the wrong direction.

I don't own a Wii or WiiU so I can't vouche for that, but I do think they made some pretty solid DS games like Radiant Historia, Dragon Quest IX and Okamiden.

edit ^Dude I love Resonance of Fate

I think Nintendo is stuck in between a rock and a hard place. The rock being, if they made new series, chances are it would go down the toilet, and be way overshadowed by Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Mario, Zelda and Metroid. The hard place being, if they stop making those classic games, everybody will hate them.

There are at least 50 Mario games including spin offs. There are only like 25 Zelda game including spin offs, and only 16 main Zelda titles.

I'm not sick of Zelda, because each game is superb.

If I saw 100 or so one timers coming out of Nintendo, I wouldn't like them anymore. Nintendo's trademark trait are it's series. Everybody knows Nintendo for Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Metroid and Kurby. Mircosoft and Sony are know for a big stack of games.

Know what I'm sayin'?

I would disagree with overusing characters. Each SSB character probably gets about a game a year or two, if popular, such as Legend of Zelda, and Pokemon. Beyond that, most SSB characters get a game once in a blue moon, like Starfox, Kirby, and Metroid. And heck, some of them barely have a game series, like Kid Icarus and Ice Climbers.

But they're used so often because each game series that Nintendo has produced offers something different, even if the genre is generally similar (for example, Mario and Kirby are both platformers, but are very different).

However, I do feel like they are overusing Mario much more aggressively than they have done in the past. This is very obvious looking at the "New Super Mario Bros" and the "Super Mario 3D" subseries. Whilst these are still good games, and have plenty to offer, I don't feel like they meet the same standards anymore, which is a real shame. The last time I was really surprised by a Mario game was when I played Super Mario Galaxy (1 & 2), and I still felt quite disappointed.

I dunno, maybe my standards are too high.
