![]() Journey is simply not a game, but an experience. Released in 2012 on the PSN by the straightforward named game company called thatgamecompany, Journey has mesmerized its audience and has even won several game of the year awards. With its gorgeous graphics and music and innovative online gameplay, its short nature keeps people coming back for more. Journey has been labeled as an art game where it tries to produce a reaction from its players. Story: You begin the game as a nameless robed figure, and as you walk around you see this ominous mountain in the back. Despite never saying anything, the fact that you're shown the mountain seems that your task is to reach it. As you wander around on your journey to the mountain, you come across various runes that tell you the history of this region. The entire game is told without any dialog, spoken or text. All of the story is told through the game's visuals and, like a painting or song, allows others to have their own interpretation of the story. Gameplay: Just like the story of the game, the gameplay is fairly simple. Like the story, the game gives you no instructions besides you walking to this mountain in the background. Along with walking, you also have this ability to create a little chirp that releases some light, you don't know what this does. As you'll soon discover very early in the game, you'll find out there's more to the game than just wandering around a desert chirping. You'll come across these strange flying cloth creatures and being near them, you'll glow and your scarf grows. With your glowing scarf, you can now temporarily float in the sky, and as you progress through the game, your scarf will grow and you can float higher and farther. This will help you across the terrain and obstacles. With this, you can also rotate the camera angle with either the standard control stick, or tilting it with the sixaxis controller. The game is broken up into several sections and your goal in each section, is to reach the section's rune. Reaching the rune will tell you more of the story, allow you to save the game, and open the passage to the next section. To reach the rune is not a simple task, many of the sections feature some type of puzzle that usually require you to activate these magic cloths sticking out of the ground with your chirping ability. These cloths have various effects, some unlock the cloth creatures to allow you to float, and some create a passage. Also while you're on your journey, you should keep an eye out for glowing symbols. When you touch a glowing symbol, they increase your scarf that allows you to float in the air for longer periods of time. Near the end of the game, there are giant flying enemies and getting attached by them tears your scarf, so be careful. A really innovative feature is the multiplayer aspect. You can either play the game solo, or you can randomly run into people who are also playing the game in the middle of your journey. When you run into them, you have zero communication with each other outside of just the chirping. The only identifiable features is that you two have different color scarfs, and you also do not learn their name until you beat the game together. Since you are unable to talk or send messages to each other, it creates an interesting worldless cooperation that's quite a unique experience. The multiplayer gameplay and the single player gameplay is exactly the same, but the experience of it solo or with a partner gives a different feel. Visuals: This is the part where Journey is most famous for, the graphics are phenominal. While the concept of just wandering around a desert seems fairly boring visually, thatgamecompany created a way to mesmerize its players with the beauty of sand. While you're walking around and sliding around dunes, you'll notice that the sand moves around where you're walking and blows when you're doing your chirp ability. It also looks visually stunning when you see it glistening in the sun. Even in the sunset areas, the light from the sunset is stunning, as is the rays of light in the dark caverns. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Music Just like the visuals, the music is amazing. The music is not only wonderfully composed, it seems to fit the various feelings that go through the scenes. The music seems to reflect the feeling of loneliness in the desert, and other parts it feels like it portrays the feeling of wonder when you're going through the ruins. Then there's the amazing theme when you're sliding down a large slope. Here are a few samples: Verdict: Journey is a must have for those who want a game that offers them not only a unique experience, but something that evokes various emotions. Just like a painting can offer various emotions for different people, Journey offers a similar, more immerse experience. Though this game may not be for everybody. With its short nature and its focus on the visuals to tell the story, some might find this as a pretentious game to show off how pretty it is, but others will find this a captivating experience. The only way to find out is to play the game yourself. Music: 10/10. Visuals (Or Graphics): 10/10. Story: 9/10. Content: 9/10. Conclusion: 9/10 |

I bought the game twice, first when it was PSN only, and then they released a collector's edition as a physical copy and packaged with the other two games from thatgamecompany: Flower and Flow |

Now that I look at it, it does seem similar, and Grungie, your right, Wind waker is much more cartooney. |

Wind Waker is cartoony, however Wind Waker HD has great shadowing and light effects, and the environment is bright and clean like Journey. Nevertheless, good review Grungie! |
