Very, VERY pretty.

Of course, this IS Namco we're talking about, and Namco/Bandai of America is rather infamous about not porting over any of the 2D Tales games. Ah well, at least it looks pretty.

Nobody should care about this game, since Tales of Destiny is the worst thing about the Tales series. Terrible characters, a horrible battle system, and it spawns fanboys like crazy thanks to Leon being a 'tragic' version of 'Squall'. One of the biggest examples of how most RPG fans have no idea what 'quality' means, where paper-thin characters with stereotypical lines are considered great and likable and able to overcome an incredibly bad story and development as well as a battle system as bad as the later ToP GBA remake's.

And then it spawns a direct sequel starring a male version of Rinoa! Wonderful! And making the Tales battle system magic-centric? Lovely. Taking balance a step back from Eternia is a GREAT way of doing things. And being ALLLLLL fanservice? Even better...

Seriously, I hate ToD like nothing else.about Namco. I wish Namco would drop dead sometimes for making more and more ToD shit while killing the team that did Seven and Venus & Braves.

Chances are, though, Namco is going to be douchey enough to port THIS one as the ONLY 2D Tales to make it over here. It's a shame that the battle system looks so improved from Rebirth's comboing system, since the only way I'll ever try it out is if it makes it through translation, since I'm sure as hell not going to waste importing cash on picking up one of the few games to make "chase Sephiroth!" seem like a deep, convoluted, and short way of keeping the characters moving.

Seriously, chase the Eye of Atamoni/God for the entire game? What an incredibly shitty story idea. Nippon Ichi craps better stuff than that for Disgaea.

Just axe Namco's RPG division, and keep everything else. No, wait, get rid of their action crew as well, nothing good has ever come out of that.

In fact, they should just to stick to the only thing they're good at: Fighters and Air Sims.

I really, REALLY hate Tales of Destiny. If someone comes into this topic and tries to 'explain' how it's a 'good' game, I think I'll have to 'kill' them. With a mail bomb.

Are you talking about US ToD2, which is really Tales of Eternia, or JP ToD2, which is the real ToD2 and a direct sequel to ToD starring Stahn and Rutee's brain-dead kid?

So you've been spared from the incredible shit that is ToD2.

Here's a summary of ToD2 for everyone:

*Stahn and Rutee cameo*
*Swordian cameo*
*40 hours of Leon Magnus fanservice*
*Swordian cameo*
*Stahn and Rutee cameo*
*Leon-centric ending*

Ahhhhh, Namco...

I am so tempted to use a Chelsea avatar, but I'm probably already in enough trouble for liking the Tales series in general. Especially for liking Tales of Symphonia. For the record yes I did like Tales of Destiny. Heck I'd consider buying the remake if it came out here. It depends on the improvements. Still to be fair I will admit Tales of Destiny was heavily flawed in several regards.

For one thing I think a certain element of the story lasts too long. Thanks a lot Leon for wasting my time. *Slaps him* Plus being forced to use Stahn was lame. I want to control someone else directly. Yeah I know about the whole find special item, use second controller, etc thing. However that much work should not be required.

Wow Arche I never knew you felt so strongly about ToD. I myself own the game and have since ripped it to pieces. What can I say it was a very easy game.

What did I think of it? I suppose it was worth my time but, it certainly could have had more depth and maybe a bit more difficulty/character development. Not utterly terrible but not great either.

Oh come on guys ToS wasn't THAT bad. I mean sure ToE and ToP stomp on it in a lot of ways but it's decent in it's own right.

Justin, imagine a game in which you where playing a sidescrolling action game in which when you pressed a button, your character may, or may not actually attack something, or perhaps instead might run face first into an enemy. In this very same game, you have three party members who stand around looking stupid and might cast a spell once in a while. This wonderful system has the response time of a lathargic snail, and on top of that controls like Driving Emotion Type-S. Now, picture that system combined with an encounter rate of every 5 seconds! It makes for a glorious eye-gouging experience which will overjoy anyone who hasn't managed to kill themselves in the first hour of the game. To top it all off you can let Motoi Sakuraba's wonderful soundtrack grate your ears faster than a food processor.

ok... Sorry I asked X_x

To add insult to injury I have in fact played and finished ToP. However I played a Dejap translated ROM version of it. Hard as hell due to some control difficulties but, I was able to get some fun out of it.

That and save state is you friend ^_^

Scale of quality for the main Tales series, from best to worst:

Tales of Rebirth
Tales of the Abyss
Tales of Eternia
Tales of Legendia
Tales of Phantasia PSX
Tales of Destiny 2
Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Phantasia SFC
Tales of Phantasia GBA
Tales of Destiny

Rebirth is the best, as of now, hands down. It doesn't have a good story, but it does have an incredibly awesome battle system, a tolerable story, and some good characters.

Abyss is extremely well done, with likable characters and a shit story, but a GOOD 3D battle system. It's the way Symphonia SHOULD have been, and feels a lot like the best of SO3 and ToS combined into one system, if that system was 75% Tales and 25% SO. Very fun battles, if somewhat mindless.

Eternia is a terrible story with terrible characters and an awesome battle system. It's almost as fluid as Rebirth's is, despite being older, and is extremely well balanced. Has the best balance of magic and melee for use in the entire series thus far.

Legendia is next, because it's well handled in every way, and a solid game overall. The biggest problem with Legendia is how different it feels from the usual LMBS battles, but that's not really a problem, per se. Story is pretty cliche, but the characters are excellently handled, with some of the best characterization around. Battles feel a little slower than Eternia, and the Climax Gauge feels broken, knocking it down a bit.

Phantasia's PSX version is the best version, simply because it's easier than the SFC version, meaning that you're not being raped by random encounters every second step. It's actually a lot of fun, and in between Destiny and Eternia in terms of battle system. It's an average title overall, but worthwhile and fun.

Destiny 2 is a big steaming pile of crap with a fun battle system. Oh, wait, almost fun battle system. For some reason, Namco rigged it that magic was infinitely more useful than melee attacks (giant no-no for a Tales game), and it gets to the point where it's more effective to use magic against magic-resistant bosses than to use the melee attacks you're supposed to. As such, it's a fun diversion, but an entire game is too much of that crap to put up with. And did I mention that it has the worst story and characters in the entire series?

Symphonia is almost as bad as Destiny 2 for story and characters, but has a far worse battle system. You know about how cheesy button mashing = win in Symphonia, so I don't need to go any further than that.

Phantasia on the SFC was broken and overly hard, but still fun at the time because it was the first. Phantasia on the GBA is slow and boring and a bad port of the PS1 version that gets ruined by the slowdown. Although the GBA port is technically superior than the SFC version, because it's a shitty port with no effort put in, it gets a lower rating.

Destiny is the reason that Destiny 2 has the worst characters in the series. Because Destiny 2 has Destiny's cast PLUS add-ons. That really makes Destiny have the absolute worst cast, since they provided a horrible cast for not one, but two games. As well, Destiny spawned the most horrifically crap emo character ever to exist, Leon Magnus, the tragic pretty boy not-really-evil villain supreme. Did I mention that the entire game's one giant fetch quest, too, and that all the characters are cliches so bad that they make Legend of Dragoon look fresh? That doesn't touch on the battle system, though. Which is WORSE than SFC Phantasia's, amazingly enough. Phantasia's was crap and broken and buggy, but that was still better than a game where there is NO challenge whatsoever. The AI is so bad in ToD that almost every single battle is a walk in the park. With Stahn alone. Which you'll see a lot, since all the other characters are useless in battle with the AI controlling them. And it's slow, and draggy, and barely a step up from Phantasia. Combine this with the rest of the trash and the SFC graphics that seem to be designed to offend the players' eyes, and you've got yourself the worst of the series.

So apparently you can get narikiri in TOD PS2 XD. That bumps it up quite a few notches for me. I wonder what narikiri you get? Just the characters or do you get all the Frio/Calor specific class ones?

I liked Tales of Destiny :P. And Tales in general really, but my favorite aspect is by and far the multiplayer above all else. I think Destiny, Phantasia and Eternia are the only ones I completed solo. Haven't really been able to do it since; battles just aren't as fun.

But I love the series a lot.

So far all I've seen is the one in the link and Leon. They showed an all-leon team completely owning end-game non-boss enemies in a matter of seconds.

Actually this one is so right and yet so wrong at the same time. Still there is no such thing as enough Chelsea. My desire for the game has increased because of that. Yeah I'm shallow and I don't care. Plus Lillith is playable it seems from the videos. Yay for that one.

I've played ToE, ToS, ToD, ToP and I'm playing ToA right now. The only one I played and didn't finish - Tales of Destiny. I just couldn't take any more of it. I agree totally with Arche. I just really don't like the game.

I've heard that the remake is apparantly worth playing and that the gross stupidity of the story and characters has been at least partially fixed. While I'm not sure if it's even possible for it to be fixed at all to bring it up to an acceptable standard, I intend to look into importing a copy some time in the new year (possibly in conjunction with Trigger Heart, or even Last Hope if I get my Christmas Bonus before Dec. 22). What interests me mostly is that the battle system is actually fun in this iteration, and that it's more intuitive than Rebirth's and faster than Destiny 2's and doesn't have the focus on magic that Destiny 2 sufferred from.

As it stands, it sits fairly low on my list of priorities, but it's at least nice to see that Namco's moved onto fixing a truly lousy game after redoing Phantasia over and over again.

It's good to hear that apparently the remake is a vast improvement on the original. I can already see major improvements myself from the videos. Still as with any remake of the original your feelings on the original can be a blessing and a curse both ways.

One can love the original so much that they become anal about even the slightest change. Even if the change is clearly an improvement. For a made up example the remake could fix bugs that make the game had to play. Such as the classic bug some games had where everything would freeze. A purist or zealous fan may even throw a fit about that.

One can hate the original so much that no matter what improvements the remake makes it's never good enough. Just the fact the remake reminds them of the original makes it so the remake is automatically terrible.

That's why I try to ignore those overobsessed zealots. ^_^

Oh, and apparently when this game was announced in TGS 2k5, they said that there was a way to keep Leon through an alternate storyline (although no one has found it yet, so people think the idea was dropped)

I have never played a Tales of... game, and frankly, I have absolutely no desire to start.

My sister played through ToS, and didn't like it all that much. That being said, TotA is here in my house as a Christmas present for her, simply because she was intrigued by it. I'm glad to hear that it was decent, Arche.

And Tales of the Abyss always reminds me of these forums. Hahaha.

I can only imagine what it would be like if we had our own game. What a scary thought. I'm sure someone could make it work but, what the heck would the plot be and what kind of characters would everyone be? That's a tough one.

Though something tells me there would be Ninjas in it somewhere.
