Before I start, I'm going to address anyone who will respond to my description: Yes, I'm comparing apples and oranges, but I'm comparing them based on the fun they give. Anyhoo, Elite Beat Agents is by far the most fun game I have EVER played on the DS, bar none. The stories are zany, the 3D graphic dancers are good, and everything else about it just screams awesome. Graphics: This game isn't the most graphic-heavy game on the market, but it still is pretty. The comics are bright and colorful (and humorous), and the dancers on the bottom - who are in 3D - are surprisingly smooth (they dont look blocky at all). Also, all the buttons you need to tap stand out from the background, so it never becomes hard to find what you need to tap (unlike, say, Gitaroo man). Music: A variety of pop and older songs. None are the actual songs though (just covers of them) but they are done pretty well. I like the music, but obviously this is going to change between people because of the various styles. The music ranges from a song by Queen (haven't unlocked) to Sk8ter Boi (whoever did that) to September to that song from the dance scene in Napoleon Dynamite. Gameplay: Ah EBA. How do I love thee? The gameplay in this game is rather simplistic (although by no means easy on the harder songs). On regular beats, an outer circle closes in on an inner circle. When the outer circle overlaps the inner one, you tap it, and gain points for how close the circles are together when you tap them. There are also rolling balls that you need to track with your stylus, as well as wheels you spin until you hit a certain level (the wheels normally appear at the end of the song for a climax, but that's not always the case). At the beginning (after going through a tutorial the first time you load the game), you can select Single player, multiplayer and options (I haven't bothered with the latter 2). In single player, you get a choice between easy and normal mode (and can unlock harder modes upon completion of normal). The fun thing is each mode gives a different main dancer (Agent J for normal, Agent Mix for easy). Once you choose that, you get to choose a song to dance to (which is indicated by "help!" signs scattered across the 3D globe, and you can unlock more by finishing the songs shown. When you choose a song, you see the opening of the story (which shows the problem the person is having) followed by the said person screaming "HEEEAAALLLPP!". Enter the Elite Beat Agents to save the day! As said before, you play the game by doing the various taps I explained earlier while the EBA dances in the background. On the top of the screen is a cheer gauge which always goes down, but goes up whenever you hit a note properly. The dances are divided into several parts, and at the end of each part you see what is currently happening to the person who you are helping. Every note you miss causes the dancers to trip and reduces your cheer gauge, and if the cheer gauge is below 50 percent, your dancers will look exhausted and the character you will helping will screw up that particular part. For example, there's one story (played to the YMCA song) where you are helping a guy search for treasure. If you have a cheer gauge above 50 percent by the end of the first part, he will find a gold coin, otherwise he'll find junk. However, screwing up a part does not mean you fail, but it does mean you won't get the best ending to that story (and the best ending ends with a nice picture based on the story, like the finding-treasure guy drinking champagne after striking it rich). If your cheer gauge goes to 0, you fail the song completely. The difficulty in this obviously depends on the difficulty setting you chose, but also the song; some can be surprisingly fast paced tapping-wise, even if they are rather slow songs. There are a few useful things that will help you improve your steps when you finish the level. You can view the replay, so you can see where you went wrong (and then figure out how to do that part properly). Or you could just sit back and watch the fun stuff happening in the top screen or see the dancers dance in the background of the lower screen. You can also save the replay for the song for future replay. There are hidden features I'm sure I have not mentioned yet (as I have not finished normal mode as of this post). While the actual gameplay is fun, it's also the little extras that make this game godly. There are dozens of references in the stories to other things (I've caught a reference to Crazy Taxi, Survivor, Homeward Bound, and ninja stereotypes), and the programmers have gone out of their way to make sure that it is fun to not only see the story unfold (in a very comical way), but also make it fun to see the EBA dance. In the YMCA scenario, for example, the dancers actually do the YMCA dance! It's friggin AWESOME! (As you can probably tell, the YMCA song/story is my favorite story so far). In short, the game is incredibly fun, with nice comical stories and a variety of music that at the minimum can not be considered monotonous. The little extras in this game such as the various culture references and the dancing also spice up the game. I have a feeling that FF12 will be collecting dust on my shelf for quite a bit while I play this game. The only people who I think may (and I stress MAY) not like the game are the people who have a tough time doing timed button/tapping presses, but even then I think they'll enjoy it somewhat. EDIT: Oh my... not all the stories here are comical. I just came across one of the most touching stories I have seen in a while.. |

You'll never find "OMG NUB" comments or get sniped by experienced FPS-ers in multiplayer mode in EBA. And unlike in singleplayer Dark Messiah, you can actually see your character all the times instead of ZOMG hands!!! Oh, and neither of the two games you mentioned have characters that make fun of the Hilton sisters, and neither have ninjas who run a car-selling empire. |

Thanks for the overview, Deiser. being a big fan of Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan myself, I'm quite pleased with the reaction everyone is giving Elite Beat Agents. Hrm. is the game as hard as the original? I know there are difficulty settings - obviously, there were those in Ouendan too, but even on Easy, Ouendan can be crazily unforgiving. I'll be picking this up sooner or later. Although I'm not sure if it'll best GoW and DMMoM.

From what I hear, it's not as hard as O! T! O!. Some people credit this to harder beats. However, I also hear they've made things MUCH more fine tuned (i.e. I heard that the wheel was a ***** to spin in O!T!O! while in EBA it's not that hard at all. I'm guessing that plays into the difficulty factor a bit. It makes it easier, but also makes the game less frustrating. I personally can't say which is harder because I haven't played O!T!O! (and I saw it in that PA convention I went to, but didn't pick it up because I thought it'd be impossible to play due to language. DAMN ME! DAMN ME TO HELL!). |

I saw a few videos of that. That seriously looks like one of the most fun things I've seen with a stylus in forever. I love music games ^_^. Does EBA keep the cheerleaders (as apparently O! T! O! has the agents too) or am I thinking of an entirely different game? |

The quality of the tracks are all 100% great. I don't think there are any that aren't covered, but each cover did a great job. I'm especially impressed with the cover of Jumping Jack Flash. That one rocks my socks off. They did a good job choosing all of the music too. I don't think there is even one truly BAD song in there. A few 'decents' and a lot of 'great's. |

Have you unlocked the Elite Beat girls yet? Not at all, I've been mostly trying to B rank and above each song as they come. I'm only in the middle of "Normal" mode right now and still having a blast. That game is too addictive. Found some interesting pics: What if Phoenix Wright was in Elite Beat Agents? You win for that first one alone. |

Desier know that I hate you for suggesting I buy this game. Because no matter how many times I get my ass kicked I keep coming back for more. Gods help me X_x Thus far my best has been on "Makes No Difference" I was able to B rank it with 502,000 points and a perfect. Not much to write home about I know but, hey I'm happy ^_^ At the moment chapter 12 continues to rape me. I'm sure I'll get it eventaully but oi god the later songs are so hard X_X |

Oddly, you'll find the Normal difficulty is actually harder than the Hard difficulty in some cases. After banging my head against the wall trying to do Normal Jumping Jack Flash I ended up S ranking one or two songs in hard. Normal is still quite hard for me @_@. Maybe it's just the illogical beats in spots; like for Material Girl. Canned Heat on Hard = ARGH though. I hate the beginning where it does the drum beats instead of the lyrics ;_;. I still have not found a clean way to handle that yet. Man, do I love the song though. |

Let's Dance took me a little while too @_@. Its awkward beat made me want to smack something on Sweatin'; it ended up being one of those I'll have to go back and A rank/S rank later.
I practiced it a little more and now it's not really a problem; but sheesh, the slowdown was ridiculous I agree. I finally unlocked Survivor and despite my dislike of rap it not only ends up being one of my more enjoyable songs in the soundtrack, but it is also oddly the easiest. You'd think the only rap song in the entire game would also be the hardest song O_o. A ranked it in a snap on every difficulty it's unlocked for. So if I can A-rank this, why the hell can I not even finish Material Girl?

ATTENTION fellow gamers. Jumpin Jack Flash is the worst song ever created. That is all. In all honesty that cover is really, really catchy but, I feel like crying right now. I already threw the game cart across the room but, that didn't work I'm still angry >_< What's stupid is I had the first part down pretty damn good for the first dozen times I did the song. Hell I got to phase 3 and screwed up somewhere, would have finished it I'm certain. Then my arm got tired and suddendly getting to phase two was impossible. These 3 sets of 4 hit marks are the devil ![]() That and I hate my moral gauge. I miss two notes and it sinks and I can NEVER get it back up. Annoys the hell out of me. |

At least you guys have leverage that you actually KNOW the songs... you should see in O!T!O when some random Japanese song is playing and you have NO idea how the beats will fall. Besides "Loop and Loop" and "Ready Steady Go" I had no idea what any of the other songs were at all. Makes it all the more challenging.

JJF Cruisin' is terrible >_<. Two or three misses and you're out and the later beats start to follow the drums at entirely random. I'd watch a video to get what you're supposed to do down then try again; that's how I did it. Yay, can't wait to do that on Sweatin' @_@. At least you guys have leverage that you actually KNOW the songs... you should see in O!T!O when some random Japanese song is playing and you have NO idea how the beats will fall. Oddly, though, I've listened to Ready Steady Go and Koi No Dance Site a lot. Koi No Dance Site must be hell. It's beat in general is just erratic and I can only imagine the stage for it. |

Aside from Material Girl and YMCA, I hadn't heard any of the songs before. Not even Sk8r Boi. Also: Sweatin' "The Anthem" is a d-bag. Beat "The Anthem". NOT looking forward to "Without a Fight"; I've found it harder than JJF on the previous two difficulties. |

I'm about ready to give up. I swear I've done JJF about 60+ times now and I still CAN'T finish it. It's not the speed of the song that bothers me it's how close some of the beats are together. Like in the first phase the 3 sets of 4 beats I can never get those right. The triple ones aren't so bad but, when my arm gets tired I can screw those up too. And like I keep saying my moral gauge is really pissing me off. I hit all the beats as best I can and it still plummets and I can't get it to go back up. I can get to phase 3 and then everything just falls apart. X_X The damn song just goes on forever too. |

I've heard of people trying to rip them, but I haven't heard anything on actual releases and Galbadia Hotel does not have them :\. I do have most of the "OST" as in the original songs in case you're interested in that, though; just missing Walkie Talkie Man, YMCA and La La. Although that won't help you find that kickass 'Makes No Difference' cover :\. I can link you to some of the Osu! Tatakae! Oendan! covers if you'd like to sample those, though: http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/1656 I'd love to get my hands on the Highway Star and Rock This Town cover myself. On a side note I'm still stuck on JJF X_x Have you tried watching a video of someone completing it? It helped me get the timing down for those infernal drum-beat hits late in the song. |

I would if I could find one. All the videos on Youtube are for Hard mode and up. And it's not that I can't do the song it's my blasted left arm. Once I get tired it's impossible to hit anything accurately because my arm starts to shake every so slightily. You know the feeling I'm sure CF That and like I said the Moral Guage is so unforgiving on that level it's not funny. I can't count the times I have actually gotten past the 4 spinners and had my Moral outright kill me simply because I can't hit Elite on some of the notes. 100-300 is plenty, why must you mock me JJF, why? Hell I got a perfect 255 combo and then my Moral just plummets because I miss one beat or something. It's really that section with the 4 spinners that kills me in the end. Even if I hit all the notes at 100 it's never enough. X_X I'll get it eventaully. I just have to learn to manage my frustration a bit better. On a side note I tried going back to do some of the ealier songs for better ranks and well the harder ones have dulled my edge. XD Tis too bad the covers haven't been ripped yet. Like I said a good handful of the covers are far better than the original, which most I've heard. Oh well I'll keep my eyes open and hope something comes up. In the mean time I can always watch my replays ^_^ |

Oh I do want to continue but, the will is just gone. I can't even get past the first phase of that song without screwing up now X_X It's so...discouraging. I honestly think the real problem comes from the moral gauge like I've been saying. It really is unforgiving in that level. It expects such perfection out of you and even then it's not enough. EDIT - Like HELL you will. No effing way Deiser. If anyone is going to do that song it's me! On a side note that video makes me a sad panda. I do about that good, though not as many elites as him and way more 100s. The game really doesn't like that though since my moral gauge just plummets. |

It is discouraging. The way I improved is by using the replay feature they give you whenever you fail. It goes straight to the section of the song you failed in (rather than having to see the song again) so you can see where you messed up and how to improve. |

I am so mad right now I have no idea what to type. Words can not describe how angry I am right now. Oh no, I'm not angry at JJF. I just B ranked it a few minutes ago. I'm angry at myself because I am such an idiot. Idiot, idiot, idiot! *bangs head against keyboard* This entire time it was my fault. My moral guage wasn't giving me the finger because the game was being mean, it was giving me the finger because I was screwing up. I had to examine some of my late game replays and then I reviewed the tutorial and it hit me like a sack of bricks. It wasn't that I was missing beats or not following rythem, oh no it was something much simpler than that. Apparently I wasn't following through with the rollers by like .2 seconds. I would get from point A but then I would lift the stylus too early and miss point B. That tiny little .2 second fraction on every roller beat was what was killing me. I didn't have this problem in the early game songs but, judging from some of my replays as the tempo increased I developed this habit. THIS is what has been biting me in the ass all this time. So with the problem isolated I went and raped JJF. 710k points and a rank of B. Only took me 4-5 attempts. Therefore since I am the idiot I take back everything negative I said about this game, save for it's learning curve which mind you is still kinda hard for a few songs. Now if you'll excuse I have to go sulk somewhere and think on learning to control my anger X_X EDIT - You know what. I'm going to MAKE myself get a perfect on JJF before I do anything else. Why? Because I derserve it for my stupidity. Oh well might as well do it now while the song is still fresh anyways. |
