I didn't think that "Let's Dance" and the "Anthem" could get any worse. Boy was I wrong. That and something seems "off" about JJF on Sweatin'. No clue what it is though. It almost feels like the beat is different. I think they added the drums in there, that might be why. On a side note I'm rather proud of myself. Of the main story levels I've been able to B rank all but, 3 of them. The silly thing is I would have had perfects on a lot of them were it not for a couple spinners and some really silly mistakes. I was SO close to having "Without a fight" perfect. That and possibly "Canned Heat". I generally screwed up on the end of the songs rather than in the middle somewhere. Oh and is it just me or is Sweatin' a tad easier on a few songs than Cruisin is? |

Ugh, you guys... Because you all have been so excited about EBA, I've been playing O!T!O literally all day. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the game's Medium mode, and now my DS is charging. It's extremely fun. One of the stages has a dude that needs to go to the bathroom badly before his violin concert. And you have to send an uber-task force of antacids to save the poor guy's intestines. Totally bizarre. |

I've been loving this game. It's just so addicting. I've been playing on Cruisin' and just finished Material Girl (the one with the celebrities on the deserted island). The game is just plain fun. I love its sense of humor and style, too. The scenes for September (the one where the weather girl is determined to make the weekend sunny) cracked me up, and the game is so surreal and bizarre. In short, it's great. So far, I have C's and D's on everything, though I'm planning on fixing that once I get through as many songs as I can. |

Okay, so here's the report from the Japanese side of things... Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan is like, a million times harder than EBA. I've seen videos of EBA in action on the harder levels, and nothing comes CLOSE to the impossibility of Ready Steady Go. There are no pauses at all and it literally feels like your hand is about to spazz and fall off. And this is in the game's Hard mode. There's still another mode to unlock. I should probably take a video of this or something, of the impossibility that is RSG. You have no idea... It makes Canned Heat look like a cakewalk. That being said, I feel I'll conquer it today anyway. It's the last song (O!T!O only has 14 songs), but each and every stage is hilarious as well. "Over the Distance" is particularly haunting and touching. The bizarre factor is definitely up there. It's fair to say that I've been extremely addicted to this game over the past few days. I wake up with these random Japanese songs bouncing around in my skull. I highly recommend that you guys import it, if you haven't already, and if you really, really enjoyed EBA. Edit: Here's a lovely little example of the stage that I'm currently slogging through: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtQDOQmcaTM |

I was playing EBA so intensely that that little bump on my stylus was starting to dig into my finger and really bother me. So I thought I'd be smart and sand it off. Turns out it's what holds the stylus into the DS. I thought it might have some sort of function. Oops. Well, it does feel better on my hand, and I have backup styli for when I inevitably lose it...heh. I've been progressing smoothly and actually got a couple of B's--one for Canned Heat and one for You're My Inspiration. I haven't gone back to improve my scores yet, so they're my only B's so far. Failing You're My Inspiration results in a really, really depressing cutscene :\ I find it odd that I missed one beat in all of Let's Dance and got a C Currently trying to struggle through the insanity that is Without a Fight... |

Whew, it took two or three hours of work, but I finally got through Jumping Jack Flash on Cruisin' with a B. Is it even possible to get that big group of red beats at the end? The numbers are so random. I finally managed to get through it by hitting the first couple and the last couple and just happening to have a high Elite'o'meter at the time. That was great fun. I'll probably try to increase my scores on Cruisin' before moving on to Sweatin', but I think I need a break first. |

And then I'll unlock Hard Rock mode before you guys do : P Unles of course Deiser has long since beat me to the punch. In the meantime I've been working on my high scores. I am proud to announce that I got my first S rank the other day. Twas on "Makes No Difference" on Cruisin' Ya, ya I know it's on normal but it's still an S rank. I'm sure I'll get another one eventually but, for now I'm satisfied. |

YAY! ^_^ Serioulsy you have no idea how happy I am to finally have it done. 50+ attempts, oi god I hope I never have to do that again. Well not unitl I try to improve my scores anyways. If you'll excuse me I need to go rape easy mode now. EDIT - Uh... I can't tell if Hard Rock is harder or easier. The beat makers and the like have been made smaller. They seem to just come up at random on screen and there aren't any pauses really. In fact now that I think of it this reminds EXACTLY of the RSG video Riot posted. I bet Hard Rock is built like that on purpose to resemble OTO. |

Oh, see, that wasn't even the hardest setting of RSG...that was just regular Hard mode. What you're referring to sounds more like Insane mode, which I'm playing through right now, and it's a HELL of a lot harder than even Hard was. Those are regular-sized beat makers for RSG on hard... on Insane mode they're about half the size. Yet Insane mode seems to be that everything is vertically mirrored, stuff doesn't appear until the last minute, and everything is a hell of a lot smaller. I've managed to beat two songs on it so far, but the entire effect is rather disconcerting. A lot less fun, as well. |

IIRC there is one more mode after Hard Rock. It's the mode where you get to have the EBA leader dance in place of your center character. I've heard people refer to it as Insane. Maybe they just mean Hard Rock. Oh and BTW, I just brutally raped easy mode. What an insult that was. Oh well at least it's done now. Back to Hard Rock! Whew! |

CF you're awesome. *listens to makes no difference* BTW how's the good fight going with you? JJF still kicking your ass? Trust me I know the feeling. Hard Rock is kinda, brutal. I mean it's not harder per se. Everything just moves too fast and the tail on the slide beats doesn't show up till the LAST second. Really, Really, annoying. I'm currently trying to figure out if the beat patterns are mirrored. Because they sure look the same to me. EDIT - Yep they are mirrored. Hard Rock is basically OTO's Insane difficulty setting. Oh well I suppose if I want to get the highest rank and Commander Kahn as a playable character I need to finish it. |

It's Jumping Jack Flash and it kicks my ass ass ass. I can get past the middle of the song without a problem now, but that section where they go 'Jumping Jack Flash...is a gas' repeatedly and start spamming beats at you can go straight to hell. CF I've done the song 50 something times. The patterns are ingrained in my skull. Had I not been so damn nervous I would have probabely gotten a perfect on that last run too. That last string of beats is really, really, nasty. My guess is you screw up when they toss the line at you and then have the 10 above the 9 with the #11 slide beat two spaces below. The song does that same pattern again from the left and then it hurls two long strings at you. Swapping direction after the first. Everything leading up to the 4 spinners isn't so bad but after them you have to be on your toes I wish I could broadcast my replay to you so you could see how it's done. Maybe it's just best to examine a Youtube video? |

Well that isn't an exact count but, it sure felt like it took me that long. Then again I keep forgetting how good my pattern recognition is. Looking back at the replay I really do wonder how I pulled off those last two strings. I really wish I had gotten that perfect. It would have made the victory all the sweeter. But, nope I missed that one beat and then I fumbled a slider. That was it though. 3 mistakes. |

I went back to JJF on Cruisin' today and got a near-perfect (what is with that group of red beats at the end, anyway?) within 15 minutes. I can't believe I had so much trouble with that song. I've been cruising through Sweatin', though I just opened up some of the hardest songs (Canned Heat, etc.), so I imagine it'll start being a lot of trouble from now on. The one thing I like about Sweatin' is that you can butcher the song and the game will still give you a B rank, heh. I had to get perfects in Cruisin' just to get B's :\ |

I'm just getting incredibly discouraged because this song stopped being any fun a long time ago. If Ouendan needs to do something, it needs to axe this failing song system it has going (or at least make the life meter normal like it is for every song but this one). I'm tired of having to slog through everything I DO get right to fail at the same string every damned time on a single miss. I'm starting to really get sick of JJF to boot. Thanks for the key map Justin. I won't have to actively seek that spot out in the movie anymore. If I can just get the EBD I can be happy @_@. |

They need to have a few Kahn exclusive songs. I don't like the fact that they essentially re-skinned the main character of whatever mode you play with his skin (he doesn't get his own mode). Hell, he doesn't even appear in the cutscenes! And because he's commander, he'd have to dance to good but obscure songs that no one will know the beat to until they play it. Either that, or let him do one song that is 30 minutes long (i.e. one of Dream Theater's songs). It'd be survival mode. MWAHAHAHAHAHA! |

Better suggestion: Acid Mothers Temple and the Cosmic Inferno's Iao Chant from the Cosmic Inferno. ~50 mins long. Masochistic suggestion: Fantômas's Surgical Sound Specimens from the Museum of Skin. Over an hour long, has no discernable beat, and changes styles very frequently. |

I'm sure I could do it too after beating Hard Rock :P. HR goes so fast that no doubt I'll be like one of those supermen on the normal modes that thinks everything is going too slow and gets perfects. Oddly I'm not having as much trouble with HR as I should. Most of my biggest problems are the sliders. I can get 300s easily (I think they actually give some leeway to compensate for the insane speed this time around) but I swear I have missed every single slider I come across :o. Memorization of Sweatin' aside, is there any way I can reliably prepare for them? I think the only song I've A-ranked or higher on HR so far is 'I was Born to Love You' and that's because I went crazy in Sweatin' and played it umpteen billion times to S-rank it. |

Funny you should say that but, that is how I felt going back to Sweatin' After having done HR it all does feel slower. There really is no real way to prepare for the HR songs. They're basically the same layouts as Sweatin' they've just been mirrored in both directions, vertically and horizontilly. As far as the speed goes just try to keep up with the new notes as they appear. You'll find that you can hit them better that way. So as long as you can keep up and you know the Sweatin' layouts to a point you should be able to predict where everything is. No clue how I managed it but, I got an A rank for JJF on HR when I finally finished it. Twas the only A I got in that mode too I think. Gives you a good idea just how much time I've spent on that ONE song. I honestly think the game was trying to mock me or something since I did recall doing terrible on that run. I think I failed at least one checkpoint. I really don't like "I was born to love you" It along with "Survivor" and "ABC" Really annoyed me. |

I guess practice practice practice does it. I'll go do Walkie Talkie Man a few times until the speed just catches me and I can start seeing those damn sliders before I miss them XD. Man though, I'm not looking forward to JJF again. Although I suspect it won't be all THAT different since JJF was already mad fast; not to understate your finishing it. I just hope I don't have as hard a time either. Oddly, the songs you listed are some of my favorites in the game. The original version of 'I was Born to Love You' beats the hell out of the cover, but overall I love the song. Survivor was rather weak compared to the original though; I can't listen to the cover when the real thing's around. |

Oh I didn't mean the songs themselves, I meant the beat patterns. It might just be me but, ABC and Survior gave me about as much trouble as JJF did on HR. The Sweatin' and HR versions of both songs aren't fun.
Nah, you're not understating anything. I mean come on I did the song at least 60 times total on all difficulties. Like I said in my graph post it took me TWO hours to beat JJF on HR and I have since not gone back to it. The song isn't harder per se it just screws with you head because of the mirroring. It's funny but I didn't get the same satisfaction finishing it on HR that I got when I beat it on Sweatin' and Cruisn' If you can recall the patterns from JFF Sweatin' you should be fine. In fact you may find the faster speed easier. |

Rant Incoming: Okay, so I'm working my way through Insane mode, which is OTO's version of Hard Rock, and I've just lost about all interest in actually getting through it. The only difference there is from Hard (Sweatin' on EBA) is that the beats are mirrored (I can't figure out if it's vertical or horizontal either, Justin), the beat makers are about half the normal size, and they don't appear on the screen until the last second. To me, this is an absolute and total cop-out. I don't know about you guys, but the fun stuff about rhythm games in the harder difficulty levels is the fact that the beats don't follow the correct melody, relying on syncopated or beat beats that are extremely easy to mess up the rhythm to. I would have rather had some off-kilter beats that really challenged my timing and rhythm of the song - not this Small, Mirrored Mode that really adds no "difficulty." That was the biggest disappointment for me - I barely squeaked through RSK on Hard (managed to get an A, don't know how that happened), and I was just expecting more, not the same rhythms in different placement. Grrr. Well, I got EBA for Christmas, so I'm sure I'll have lots of fun with it as well. |

Disclaimer: This is really more just me doing a mandatory post in a semi-legendary topic more than anything else. Nothing new here other than my opinions/thoughts/etc., a lot of which should be obvious to many of you anyways. So feel free to skip, I'm just kinda getting some stuff off my chest. Anyhow, just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying this game... It lends itself extremely well to just doing a quick 5 minute fix when you need it, yet is deceptively addictive. I think, eh, I'll just play one quick song and end up doing around 10 sessions (mixing replays for score and rank, replays just to hear songs I like, and new songs I need to clear). And I would never have gotten this without you guys. I don't listen to music that often at all (I own fewer CDs than most people have sold back to the store, and have never even used an iPod), and I suck horribly at games like DDR and Guitar Hero. Yet, when I saw how much everyone here loves this game, I went against my own judgement and picked it up. Now it's giving Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin some serious competition for my DS cartridge slot. So yeah... thanks a ton everyone.

Whew, just got done with Jumping Jack Flash... I can't believe some of you are either brave or masochistic enough to try it on HR mode, and for that, I commend you. It took me somewhere between three and four solid hours of attempts just to finish the freaking Breezin' version. Anyhow, just some random thoughts... - It's weird... somehow they managed to pick 16 songs that either like or don't mind and only 3 that I dislike. The odds that picky person like me would like such a high ratio of the songs are astronomical... even more astronomical is that the three I dislike all happen to be the optional songs. Freaky. - Episode 12 shocked the hell out of me. - I forget which song it was, but on my first attempt, I got roughly 80,000 points and a C rank. Then I immediately re-did the same song and got roughly 50,000 points... and a B rank. That was... interesting. - I'm officially naming this as my favorite portable game of 2006. Edges out New Super Mario Bros for having better replay value, and Portrait of Ruin due to the latter having an annoying glitch (otherwise EBA and PoR would tie; PoR is incredible otherwise). All three are great games though. Anyhow, I'll stop there. |
