Anyone else have this yet? I'll refrain from spoilers and such, but I will post some first impressions here. Currently about 2 and 1/2 - 3 hours in and here's my thoughts so far...

- The opening FMV is the most impressive thing I've ever seen on a portable gaming system. Ever. If you've not seen it already, I guarantee your jaw will hit the floor when you do.

- The music is bloody fantastic. I'm having a very hard time figuring out whether it's "game" music or an actual orchestra (methinks the latter is true at least for the opening sequence). Everything still sounds pretty much like the NES version, but vastly improved in quality.

- The in game graphics aren't quite as good as I'd thought they'd be... at least, from a purely technical standpoint and even then it's still very good for the DS. From an artistic standpoint however, the world is absolutely beautiful, very immersive, and has as much personality as any other game in the series. They might not look fantastic, but there's just tons of little details and artistic touches that really make a difference.

- The gameplay is shockingly faithful to the NES version right down to getting multiple "hits" per attack. And yes, it's still fairly challenging. It's not SMT: Nocturne or anything, and shouldn't be too bad for FF vets, but if all you've played is FF7, you'll be in for a rude awakening.

- There's more story now. It's not exactly in-depth like FFIV and onwards (or at least not so far), but there's actual cutscenes now, with more dialogue in general, and all four of the Onion Kids now have something resembling individual personalities. They talk, have their own names, and you can actually tell Luneth apart from Ingus, etc.

Anyhow, I'd highly recommend this so far. Your thoughts, those of you who've purchased it?

You're going to be mad disappointed with the final boss theme's square waves. I heard the other music and thought 'Whoa, this is going to be awesome'; and then they totally WASTED the final boss theme ;_;.

This actually doesn't matter a whole lot, but when it comes to VG music I am totally a final dungeon/boss whore :P. The final dungeon better be damn good to compensate XD.

That said, I don't actually have it yet. I want it. Very badly. But I have a backlog.

AND YOUR TOPIC IS NOT HELPING THIS SITUATION ;_;.

To me, battle music must be KILLER. So far in most of the RPGs I've played I'm yet to be totally repulsed.

The song itself rocks so you won't be disappointed there, I just expected a much better arrangement than they gave it considering the kinds of awesome poured onto the rest of the game.

Battle music in general I don't mind as long as it isn't offensive, but never ever screw up the final dungeon/boss themes or I will be an unhappy one ;_;_;. Thankfully, that is a very rare occasion.

I found the original version of FFIII to be nice despite some of the problems it had. So I'm looking forward to this version. I'm just not sure when I'll get it and play it. Darn it I still need my own DS. Maybe if I split myself into 10 people....

Obviously, I'm going to need a lot more time before I can comment on the final dungeon/boss themes. I've heard some fan-brewed remixes of the final boss theme, but never heard the original NES versions of either (I only got a fraction of the way through the NES version), so I'll be going into this with a fresh perspective.

The music I've heard so far though kicks ass. Everything from the dungeons, to towns, to the regular and boss battles are all outstanding so far. Oh, and I've confirmed that the opening theme is indeed orchestrated (dunno about the rest, it's probably just extremely high quality in-game music).

And don't worry, I'm a big final boss music whore myself (I'm not kidding when I say it's part of the reason Skies of Arcadia/Legends is my favorite game ever; if you've heard it, you know what I mean), especially with the Final Fantasy series' high standards in that area. Hopefully this won't disappoint.

One other thing I've noticed: so far, there seems to be less enemies per battle than the NES version. This could very well change, but I don't think I've seen more than three or four enemies at the same time.

That's Maria from Xenogears, the game he's playing right now. And it looks an awful lot like the portrait of her at rpgamer.com, but it could still be from a lot of places.

Also... I don't really care about the graphics, but for those who do, I may have to eat my words about FFIII's visuals lacking. They're getting a LOT better as the game progresses (wait till you get to Medusa's tower). The character/job models in particular are very impressive.

Notable as well are the facts that the Ancient village music is almost tear inducingly beautiful, and that guest characters now actually help out in combat. Neat.

While it's cool that guest characters participate in combat occasionally (and pack a surprising wallop in each attack), they help out so infrequently that you can't depend on them to be there when you really need them.

Not complaining, just elaborating on the guest system.

Oh, and for whatever reason, ghosts in the FF3 universe appear to be gingerbread-man-shaped silhouettes with the borders made of rope o_o

In terms of the avatar it's a case of just use search engines, visiting certain sites and lucking out. Also lately my avatar seems to be based on one of three things. What I am currently playing, what I have recently finished playing, or it will be one of those moments of motivation. It really depends on the timing and how I feel.

As for the music of Final Fantasy 3, I have played the original and find the final boss tune cool. However I'm also a fan of the DS version of the final boss tune. The new version may not be as strong as the original, but it also feels more epic. Well if that makes any sense, I'm not sure how to describe it.

Don't get FFIII... If I know your tastes, you're not going to like it at all. It's slow, encourages grinding, has absolutely no strategy... It's one thing if you're a fan of old-school stuff, but I've never really gotten that vibe from you.

Rumour do I detect bitterness in that statement? I'm going to summise that you never played FF3j did you? Eh heheheh. :ph43r:

First and foremost I would like to assure anyone else who decides to play this game that it does not in fact encourage grinding. On the contrary. It encourges proper use of your equipment and the job system.

Now the original FF3j encouraged grinding with it's awful Capacity point system. This game doesn't have that but, instead it requires you to fight so many battles before the full potency of your newly selected job sets in. Thus far this number hasn't risen above 4 and it doesn't matter what you fight either.

Just think of it as an excuse to figure out how well the new job is going to perform. That's all. As far as no strategy is concerned that's a bold faced lie. Make the wrong choices in what jobs you use, equipment and spells you hand out and you WILL suffer for it. This game is NOT a cake walk. If you walk into it expecting something along the lines of current gen RPGing than you're in for a very, very rude awakening.

This game has all the horrific qualties of it's 8 bit original. You will NEVER have you hand held, the enemies will beat the tar out of you and the bosses will make you cry with their TWO actions a turn. Though keep a level head, think clearly, and plan and you'll be fine.

As far as slow is concerned I have no idea what you mean.

Lastly I have some sage advice for anyone else who plans on buying this game and playing it. The beginning is quite possibly one of the roughest spots in the game and it may deter people. One fight in particular in the Nepto Dragon Temple. RS you know what I speak of yes?

1# Search towns high and low BEFORE you buy anything. You never what you'll find stashed in a corner. This game has secret treasure chests EVERYWHERE.

2# The elemental rods can be used by mages ONLY for a FREE version of the spell imbued on them. So when your White Mage isn't healing have her whip out a Fire rod for a free fire spell every turn. Just use it like an item. No worries it doesn't shatter or disappear so use the rods as much as you like. I'm certain there are other items in the game like this though I can't remember.

3# Sasune Castle, West Tower. Go here before you goto the Sealed cave, trust me.

4# Remember that most every class can duel wield weapons. Nothing like a warrior with twice the awesome ^_^ Though be careful where you use duel wielding. Sometimes a shield is a better option.

5# Medusa can be beaten at levels 12-15. You are not underleveled. It's just a bitch of a fight. Don't be afraid to use your Zeus' Rage, Bomb Fragments, and the like on her either.

6# Rather than make all your characters mages in the Nepto Dragon Temple just leave them as is and put EVERYONE in back row. Run from the majority of battles unless you're feeling lucky and want your White mage to pwn everything with her Fire rod

And lastly

7# SAVE those 2 Antartic winds you get in the first dungeon. I don't care if the Djinn is weak to ice or that you want a cheap victory on the Land Turtle. SAVE THEM! Save them and use them on the Giant Rat in the Nepto Dragon Temple. You can thank me later. Hell you should be saving those items for when you really need them anyways.

Whew that was a mouthful. As for me I just got to the Dwarf village. I've done fine so far but Medusa kicked my ass. Just like the good ol days back when I played FF3j...with save states X_x Thus far I'm very pleased with the game and I feel like it's only going to get better ^_^

^ I largely agree. The way the job system is laid out, grinding is actually made a little too EASY :P. It's incredibly easy to gain job levels and you'll generally have gained at least six naturally by the end of a dungeon.

In general, your experience level in and of itself doesn't matter a whole lot within reason. The general tier of power goes like this: weapon/armor choice matters more than Job levels which in turn matter more than levels.

However, I'll admit that there is some grinding encouragement in the job levels aspect, but that depends on if you'll be regular attacking with that job. You can easily swap mage types and be fine as far as job levels go, but you're gonna need to get your jobs up there if you want to take full advantage of your regular attack command. ESPECIALLY for Monks.

Even then, though; we're not talking hours of fighting. Generally, your job levels will be fixed during the dungeon you use them. Just don't switch attacking classes right before a boss fight and expect to immediately be able to utilize them to their fullest :P. Sorry but no; that was FF3j NES that let you do that.

It's a noticable improvement over FF3 NES. I loved FF3 NES and love FF3 DS even more. The FFT-style artwork by the same artist, the general direction of the music (save final boss theme ;_;) and the gameplay is fun.

There's only a few gripes I actually have with FF3 DS:
-They remade it in full, but so far they didn't actually remake the core game progression all that much. Your orphans are characters and talk a little more individually, but it's not taken advantage of as much as it should have been. As it is, once you leave the heavily modified beginning, the progression deteriorates back to mirror FF3 DS exactly in how elaborate everything is; with the occasion treat like Cid's revelation in Canaan before your second airship.

It strikes me as a really odd wasted opportunity. Desh's whole section of the game especially should've been expanded on.

Right now I'm playing with my jobs after I got the second airship so we will see if that remains the case.

-Heavily Randomized Turn Order >_<.

-Dual-wielding is still the very obvious option if you want to do any physical damage at all. This is such a wasted opportunity to balance it so the choice to use one weapon along, two weapons or a weapon and a shield together mattered :\.

Overall, despite how elaborate those complaints are, they aren't major game-breaking gripes. As I said above, I love FF3 DS.

I've played FFIIIj, and I played a few hours of the DS version. The DS version is certainly better, but I still don't think it's that good. There isn't that much grinding, but it's more or less the only way to get things done; the game gives you little to no idea of what jobs will make things easier, and even if it did it wouldn't really matter. The point just seemed, to me, to use the strongest everything as much as possible.

And no, I don't think I was bitter, I just really don't like the game at all.

Ya I noticed that too. Makes trying to bring anyone back with your precious Phoenix downs during battle rather difficult. Which reminds me. How the hell do you raise someone back outside of battle without using one? Wellsprings don't work, nor does the inn. Tis very odd if you ask me.

Oh well I hope I get the life spell soon.

Actually, the toughest bosses so far have been [sp]Salamander and Hein[/sp], both of which I just barely managed to pull off a victory against (the former actually killed my party on my first attempt).

If anything, I thought the beginning was too easy... and now the game is getting really tough.

I gotta get back to this little gem of a game... I've mainly been playing Okami, as well as various Castlevania games to tide me over until Portrait of Ruin.

I'm only kidding. I can see where you're coming from on that, although I do think that's a bit of a harsh judgment so early in the game, but hey. If you don't like it, you don't like it.

I figured it was something like that XP. I just had to make sure before I said anything.

Oddly I didn't have too many problems with him, but I can see why he's frustrating. If you fight him normally, you have to count on him not changing his weakness every single round, negating your Scholar's study for that round. That is so damn annoying @_@.

Geomancers FTW.

I just got raped by Salamander last time I played. God I wish this game had save Crystals before bosses, but that would be too easy for an old 8 bit title wouldn't it? I might have to gain a level or two to beat him. 15 might be too low.

Hein is easy even without magic IIRC.

Ya as odd as it sounds I swear Ingus was dead one time and I tried bringing him back with a wellspring and it didn't work. You should look into that next time you play CF to make sure I'm not losing my mind. Because if that were true that's ugly.

Ah they split the wellsprings into two types, one for healing, the other for reviving. Thank god I thought I was losing my mind.

Currently I'm going after Noah's Lute. I think I'm begining to remember why I didn't enjoy this game very much. After Garuda it's all up hill. Gauntlet indeed. Of course that's IF you can get by Garuda. Never liked that fight. Felt too luck based.

Now if you'll excuse me I have Chimeras to kill. DIE YOU BASTARDS! I'll teach you to throw lightning at me when I'm not looking!

UGH.

Suddenly I don't think quite so highly of this game. I'm learning the hard way that this game suffers from Persona 1 syndrome (i.e. can't save in dungeons, and said dungeons aren't short).

I just spend around 35 minutes making my way through the Water Temple only to have Kraken beat the fucking shit out of me. It wasn't even a fight, he killed off two of my characters in one round, and I wasn't able to revive them because the son of a bitch cheats. On the same round I used a Phoenix Down on Ingus, Kraken somehow singled him out for an attack even though he shouldn't be available as a target. Since he's, y'know, DEAD. ARGH!!!!!

I lost all that progress, which consisted of multiple job and character level gains for everyone, plus my black mage had just learned Blizzara.

It just really pisses me off... I can't believe with all the updating they did to this game, they were plum stupid enough not to implement either a hard save anywhere or save crystals before bosses. This is not "good" challenge, this is just idiotic game design.

And no, I don't give two shits if the NES version had the same problem, there's no excuse. That was a problem with primitive technology, and a problem we no longer have. And on top of everything else, this game has some of the toughest manadatory bosses I've ever seen in a mainstream FF title, even including FFTactics.

What's sad is, much like Persona 1, this is otherwise an extremely solid game rendered less playable than it should be... and by the same design flaw.

Just... ugh. I think I'll put Dragon Quest Heroes or Trace Memory in my DS for a while. Or something.

Honestly, for a portable game, this entirely kills it for me. I can't STAND it when portable games don't have a "save anywhere" option. Is there a soft save at least?

Portable games are meant to be that - portable. If you're going to be taking it with you somewhere, the assumption is that you can't sit there for hours and game. You need to game in short bursts. If that's not possible, then you might as well be playing a console game, because there's absolutely no reason for it to be portable.

Rant, I know, but coming from someone who plays portable games probably more than console games, it just really saddens me to have an experience ruined by the lack of save points. Save points themselves are archaic and a thing of the past; having them appear in a portable game is just ridiculous.

Yes, you can soft save, so they at least conceded that for portability. However, even with soft saving, if you die, you can't reload that save, so you still lose all the progress. Which sucks horribly.

Heck, I'd have settled for a Dragon Quest like feature where you pop up back in town with all your exp and items, but half your money. But no, they can't even do that.

I don't think I'll go so far as to sell the game... I tried that with Revelations: Persona (which, again, has this exact same problem), and I just ended up buying another copy since it's SMT and not terribly common. And I was enjoying the heck out of that game until I hit a situation similar to this one. I can already think of a few ways I can prepare better for this dungeon.

However, I don't think I'll be playing this again for a while either.

Kraken, Garuda, Salamander, maybe Medusa, hell even the giant rat to some are game breakers because they are so damn hard. Lest I forget Crystal Tower and the dark world.

The problem with Kraken is that his Blizzara spells hurt like a bitch. His attacks aren't too painful if you have a white mage heal every turn, but the ice spells are just rape in a bottle. I was roughly lv19 when I killed him. The dungeon is easy enough to get through, just abuse Light rods ^_^

What I did was I knew that Blizzaga spell near the bottom of the dungeon would help me immensily. So I made two trips. The first trip to get the spell and then trek back out. The second to hand Kraken his head on a platter. What the first trip allows you to do is learn the dungeon and it's enemies. You also get valuable EXP and Job EXP while doing it and you get the Blizzaga spell. Throw that to a black mage with duel rods equipped and he can easily do 900-1000 dmg to Kraken in one shot.

After that just beat him stupid with your knights. Having one of them duel wield the Blood sword with something else is oh so helpful. In terms of class you should ALWAYS have a White Mage in the group, mine is Rafia. And he/she should be healing nearly every turn. Having a black mage all the time is rather helpful too and then make the left overs offensive classes.

The problem with this game is that it suffers from being an NES era title. Having never been released here I doubt SE wanted to butcher it for the American audience and opted to have it play like it did way back when. In fact by the feel of it the game is slightily harder. Poor excuse I know but it's the truth.

That and I feel like I have an unfair advantage over those of you who didn't play FF3j on ROM. I know the inner workings of this game, it's secrets, how to fight bosses, what jobs to use, ETC. So perhaps I've dulled it's edge a bit knowing what's up ahead.

RS if you don't like Kraken than I suggest you stop now. Because Garuda will make you that much angrier than Kraken. He can use a hit all lightning attack that does roughly 550-600dmg to the entire party. Add in an extra hit and he seems nearly impossible. Enter the Dragoon and their lovely Jump ability. The game for some reason WANTS you to use Dragoon for this fight. Not a problem given that you're pratically handed enough Dragoon armor and weapons to fully equip 3 people.

It doesn't make the fight any easier though. It's the only battle in the entire game that I can't stand. I'm just happy the old CP system is gone -_-;;

If those of you with the will to keep playing this game get stuck anywhere I'd be more than happy to offer my help. Just ask.

EDIT: Deiser if you don't mind my asking what made you give up?

I barely remember most of the inner-workings of FF3 (except, of course, the gimmick bosses) and I'm doing really okay. A lot of the classes are really well balanced, so I'm actually doing very well using a Scholar as my primary mage with attack items and of course, the thief is a mainstay.

I think a lack of save anywhere is really dumb though. It feels like they remade FF3, but kept far too much of it the same at the same time. This is more akin to a Dragon Quest remake; prettied up graphics, some differences in balance and scenes, but overall the mechanics, features and general progression of the game is exactly the same with little change. I'm confused as to why Square basically rewrote FF3's engine with 3D graphics instead of making obvious updates and changes.

*shrug* In the end, I can see why people would not care for it. I enjoy it a lot myself, though.

Because the rumour of them not having the original code anymore is actually the truth. They had to redo the entire game from scratch anyways rather than dumping the code from an old hard-drive.

There's a good reason why the game's never been re-released before this.

Honestly? It just didn't appeal to me. Nothing of it did apart from the graphics. I didn't like the battle system, I didn't like how damn broken some of the bosses were, the story was rather dull, and the game FORCED you to use particular jobs in order to survive (ie use mages in the part where you stay mini-ized). I HATE it when I have to use a particular job simply because the game dictates it.

There's a good reason why the game's never been re-released before this.

Not what I meant XP. I mean, choosing to closely emulate the original mechanics when Final Fantasy in and of itself has advanced so much beyond that. At least draw from more recent pools; it's not like they didn't have to completely rebalance the game anyway since they removed any enemy parties with more than four in them.

I still don't see why they couldn't have at least made hard-saving anywhere a gameplay option or something. I mean, FFI and II for Dawn of Souls had all kinds of new trimmings like that, and Origins allowed you to choose whether or not you wanted to use more modern gameplay features.

I guess that's always been the game's one true flaw. Not being able to save when needed. Hence why save states were a god send when I played FF3j. Of course that doesn't change the obsurdity of some of the fighting.

I never remember the back to back fight to get the key to Eureka being this hard. Maybe it's because of the two actions per turn nonsense. Nothing like having your offensive guys fried with ONE attack spell. I swear I beat these guys at around lv40. Maybe I'm losing my mind. Oh well, time to use the two trips idea again. Namely so I don't have to recollect some of the treasure every time I die. ^_^;

EDIT - I just checked my old FF3j file. Lv47 right before the last boss. Yup I'm not losing my mind this game IS harder. Curse you SE! Curse you! Though of course that's still under leveled even for the last boss. Even still I should be able to beat these two <_<

Nothing kills a game for me like having to re-do something I've already done just because my crystal ball didn't tell me how tough a boss was before I got to it :/ It's ok though - I'm lucky enough to have a brother with lots of free time and far more patience than I do, so when games like this come up (ones I'd love to play, but don't have the time for) I just ask him for the edited highlights so I can get a feel of what was going on.

I'm such an idiot. You figure with my memory I'd remember this but, I completely forgot that you can get your last set of jobs from the Earth Crystal the minute you have all the fangs. You can't enter Crystal Tower but, you can still get the jobs.

That is of course if you can get by Titan, which IMO wasn't that hard at around lv40. Getting Ninja, Magus, and Devout for that back to back fight for the Eureka key is so worth it. I raped the first of the two in two rounds flat. Go me.

And thus we come to the end of the long road. The only problem is that it just gets more ugly from here. There are NO save points in Crystal Tower and the areas beyond. If you die for any reason you have to do the WHOLE freaking dungeon AGAIN. Boy oh boy I loved this back in FF3j, I miss my save states : /

Oh well I suppose some grinding is in order after I finish off Eureka. Going to make everyone Black Belts and goto Bahamut's Lair and get everyone to lv60. Going to need at least 40 shurikens too. This should be fun. And you people wonder why I call this game "The Gauntlet" V_V

It could be worse, they could have allowed players to make a permanent save in the final dungeon and thus be trapped forever. Still it is kind of depressing to know there is no hard quick save. This game would have been a perfect fit for such an idea.

Also yeah I know, I should actually be playing this game. However I still have yet to get my own DS. I am behind on a lot of things. I am hoping that my brother will be getting FF3 DS sooner or later and I can perhaps borrow the DS. Assuming the game has multiple save slots.

Still it's good to know ahead of time that I should be prepared to get some safety levels. Most likely if/when I finally get around to playing the game, I'll probably do the usual. Which is gain one or two levels on occasion. I'll try to save the bulk of the leveling up for before the final area. As well being sure to stock up on supplies.

In any case I am kind of interested in seeing what the leads are like. Not so much in the subjective since like who is interesting and who is boring, but more in the objective sense. Like in terms of what their personalities are like. Hence a reason one day I need to play the game. Heck it's been too long since I'd done much portable anyway. It also doesn't help that several games went missing for some reason or another. Darn it that just plain sucks.

Hell a save point at the top of tower would suffice for me. That and a short cut through that damn able maze. Having to pass through the maze every time you want to get back to the Invincible gets old quick. That way if you do screw up in the LoD you don't have to do the whole tower again.

I'm up to the Molten Cave, and I'm still not sure whether or not I'm enjoying the game. It's quite bare bones, and I think I prefer FFII's system and of course FFV's system is leaps and bounds better. I agree that it really does need save points in dungeons, even if I haven't died yet to a boss. I imagine I wouldn't play the game for a while if I had to do a dungeon again.

Overall, my current thoughts about it are...meh.

My Thief just hit job level 99 in Saronia ^_^. I can't help but enjoy how much some classes rock now. I've had Ingus as a Scholar and have just been totally pwning bosses in that FF8 sort of way by having my Thief 'draw' magic for him to use >_>. He does like 3-6K with item spells thanks to the item bonus and that INT. I hope to keep him a scholar for the whole game XD. Or at least until job level 99. But that isn't far off.

Not sure what to do with my Thief next. Obviously, I don't want him to stay a Thief except when farming items. Justin, do you know if Samurai/M.Knight is any good in this version? I may hold out for that if anything. I tried a Bard, but it seems to suck @_@. Like a really crappy white mage.

It's a shame that FF bards are never good. In fact, Wizardry seems to be the only series that appreciates bards...perhaps a little too much.

The Songstress was pretty good in FFX2. In fact, I relied on it a lot in a number of boss fights. Matador's Song + that one defense increasing song = WIN.

I just started on the game recently myself. I've mainly got the party formed and am doing a bit of early leveling up before moving forward. I'm going for level 7 as a good base start leveling. When I do get the classes, I'm going to do what I do in FFs with Job Classes. Which is try to make sure each person is a different job.

I just have one question that might just make the entire game for me.

Is there a Monk class?

There's not one but two variations of Monk XD

Monk is like FF1's Monk; your attack and defense go up a notch or two for every job level you gain until your equipment actually brings your stats down. They're best used when wearing nothing. They get Retaliate, which is kinda useless as you actually have to make them waste a turn to counter attack. But they're a good class.

Black Belt is supremely powerful in physical attack and HP growth. They get Build Up, which can be stacked XD.

So...Black Belt is better?

Note that the real first version used in FF1 was Black Belt not Monk.
