Super Robot Wars Original Generation 2; Better than the predecessor in every way

So I've been playing SRW: OG2 for the past 2 weeks or so. As Arche and Justin can tell you, I'm a rather new fan to the SRW franchise, but have become incredibly fond of whatever of the series I can pick up. Several months back, I played the first of the OG games. The story was phenomenal and I loved the characters and the unique mechs. However, it did show its age (it was made in 2000 iirc), as the graphics were rather.... "stiff", for a lack of a better word and for whatever reason half the characters had the generic mech of the game (the gespent mkII).

Enter OG2, which essentially got rid of all the negative aspects of OG1 and improved on the good aspects as well. The sprites are far cleaner, and the battle animations are incredibly fluid for a GBA game. The characters are even more varied than the first game, and there are very few "generic" mechs, and even then they aren't that generic anymore (one of the Huckbein M's - the generic unit of OG2 - has one of the most powerful attacks of the game).

The battles are also far tougher in this game than they were in the first game. In the first game, you could fail the mission you're on, and you'd keep the experience, money and kill count (neccessary for obtaining hidden items and mechs), you earned as well as go for the battle mastery of that stage again (Battle masteries are points that you earn on each stage by completing a certain task ranging from farely to insanely difficult, and are used to unlock a bonus stage at the end of the game). In OG2, while you keep the money and experience you earned, you CAN NOT go for the battle mastery again for that stage nor do you keep the kill count. Furthermore the bosses are far harder in this game than the last; several of the bosses you meet in the MIDDLE of this game are just as hard - if not harder - than the end-game bosses of the first game.

As said before, the graphics are far improved, but warrant another mentioning. The animation is downright incredible for a gba game, and feels like you are actually watching a battle in some robot anime as your character attacks. The programmers paid special attention to some of the fan favorite characters and robots (such as Sanger Zonvolt) and animated these favorites so well that they move almost as well as their console counterparts.

So I really enjoyed the game. Anyone else have a chance to play it?

I've only played about 8 battles or so into the first game, but I do like what I've played a lot. I don't love SRPGs in the same way as turn-based RPGs or 2D action-platform games, so naturally, despite how much I like this one, I kinda forgot about it after a week or so.

Nice... I already thought it felt like an actual robot anime in OG1 (playing these on a GBA Player rules), so this sounds quite cool.

Also... is the story connected to the first game? Would you recommend finishing it to understand WTF is going on in this one?

You'd be pretty lost if you don't finish at least 75 percent of the game on Ryusei's route. He's the character where most of the canon stuff occurs (the whole reason why the DC was created is properly explained there, since you actually encounter Bian). This game is a direct continuation (6 months later) so they have a ton of references to the first game (and you won't know where half the characters came from if you don't finish at least 75 percent of the game).

Actually, you can probably jump straight in. I never touched Ryusei's route at all, and only played Kyosuke's route to like...Chapter 20 or so and got along mostly fine. Cause while it is a continuation, it is still a separate chapter so you don't need to get all the references.

I'm about 2 or 3 chapters away from the final scenario of OG2. Love it, got about 34 of the battle masteries (which I think still isn't enough for the special scenario, actually, so fuck that).

I love Rampage Ghost. It's so fucked up, it's awesome.

I'd make another topic but, I figure it would just be eaiser to post my impressions on OG 1 here.

I must say I can't put the game down. It has this addictiveness to it I just can't place. The story and the characters are really interesting and the gameplay is just damn fun. While the game may be hard as long as you use a bit of strategy and your spirit commands you'll do fine.

In fact the only places I truly got hung up were when you first fight Tempest and then when you have 8 turns to move the Hirogane to the lower right of the map. I kept falling up short because I was worried that the Hirogane would attract too much fire from the enemy, of course Elzam and his units are bent on killing Rai on that map anyways.

After that the last battle that really kicked me in the ass were the two fights against Valsion. I didn't lose them but, boy did my squad get rapped.

ATM I just finished mission 20 something on Ryusei's route. It's the mission where you first encounter Lune, Bian's daughter. I must say her mech is rather...different. Now maybe I haven't seen enough Mecha/Super robot anime but, I don't remember ever seeing a mech like hers.

Hers along with the rest of some of the mech designs are really cool. I really like Irm and the Grungust, and Masaki and his Cybuster. The Cybuster is by far one of my favorite units namely because it's so damn hard to hit when it's in Cybird mode. I really like Ryosuke's and Excellen's mechs too.

Now if Sanger would just show up already so I can see how awesome he is.
